Pit Bull Discussions & Pictures / Qurestions about Pit Bulls
« on: October 10, 2006, 07:52:33 am »
I've heard Pits live long lives and I have heard they usually die young (7 to 8 yrs old)
Can anyone give me their insight and how long Pits live to usually?

I'm also told Pits are prone to mass cell lumps and my girl (who is almost 6 y/o) is having a lumpectopmy Monday. Can any Pittie owners who have dealt with this give me some insight.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Questions about Caucasians
« on: October 05, 2006, 05:48:32 am »
We've been looking into LGD's and been told Caucasians are considered as such. However in an earlier post I read it seems they weren't really meant as such. (Or am I not reading right?)

We have a sweet pit bull and unfortunately she has been put in a position where she felt she had to protect my husband.
But it showed us she was capable. However she usually just goes up to cars pulling in the drive (Mail, UPS, folks lost and in the wrong driveway) and people wagging and thinking everyone is her very best friend. I don't want her nasty but I wish she would be more alert to caution. Maybe it is a wonderful thing she is such a sweetie yet when a true threat comes she changes to a totally different dog.  ;D
Now that she is nearly 6 (and cause we also would like a LGD) getting a puppy now would be a good idea cause by time the pup is 2, Niki will be 8.

Anyway, as she gets older and I know her days will someday end, and due to us needing a LGD as well as a protector for us. I was wondering.

1) How do they do with strangers after they know they are ok?

2) Is there much of a difference between males and female?
(Protection ability)

3) Does spaying or neutering lessen their protective instinct?

4) How does someone go about finding a reputable breeder?
(PM me if you know of one)

5) Are their temperaments as extreme as a Fila?
(I had in the past checked into them and felt they were not for us)

I may have more questions later.
It would be nice to have one dog that can protect us as well as the livestock. We have folks coming up the driveway at times for the prior owners (who were of questionable nature-drugs) and I have a relative who is not emotionally balanced who leaved for months and sometimes years and then turns up on your door step unannounced that worries me. I love this person cause they are a relative but they frighten me and have behaviors that greatly concern me.

With what I have mentioned above would a Caucasian fit the bill?

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Questions about LGD's
« on: October 05, 2006, 05:22:42 am »
I have a few questions about LGD's.

1) Is it true females make better guardians?

2) Do they work well on their own or better in pairs?

3) What breed of LGD do you have and whay have you chosen that breed?

4) Is it a bog problem introducing new livestock after the dog is an adult?

5) How are LGD's with poultry?

Hey everyone, it's been a while since I posted.
But I've been stopping in to read.

Mozart is doing wonderfully and so much so that we'd really like to adopt another deaf Dane. If anyone happens to come across one needing a loving forever home, hubby and I are here. We would want a male.

Secondly, we are now ready and in need of a LGD. We have a small herd of goats and have more coming soon.
I've researched GP's and AS's and Caucasians (my favorite so far) There's a mam*** (can't remember the name or spelling) we need to check into.
If anyone happens to have web sites, book and other info we can check out and research on LGD's please lead me in the right direction.
This will be our first. Sure can use all the knowledge, advice and help we can get to make this as successful as possible. Many thanks.

My husband who is a retired Veteran who has also lost the last 3 weeks work due to arthritis has decided to start woodworking and will be buying his supplies and starting his woodworking shop here in the next couple weeks.

What I'd like from folks is ideas.
What's out there you can't find or can only find that is to spendy?

For instance, raised water and food dishes?
I have seen them to be quite spendy.
He can make them and a profit for half the price.
Added bonus since they will be custom made, he can make it specifically for your dogs as he won't be the big commercial type where they make hundreds of just 18, 20 and 22 inches high.
The finish can match your decor.
We will offer toll painting on them and / names painted on them.
Please, this is a new endeavor and we can use all the ideas you have.
One idea we have is wooden doggy toy chests, for the dogs toys that would have the dogs name on it.
He wants to make quality things for critter folks at affordable prices just so he can have fun and make a modest living.
Thank you for any ideas.

Nikita has always had the run of the house when I'm not home, but 2 dogs can't be trusted  :D
We left them alone in the house for the first time and went to dinner (a whole hour and a half)
It wasn't that bad, but I did have a bit of clean up to do and Mr. Mozart has a kitty scratch on his nose  :o
Time to run out and buy Mozart a crate.
We're hardly ever away from home, but for that once every week or two times, Mr. Mozart will need to be crated.
A lesson learned. :)

Some people are so stupid.
My husband was traveling home today when he seen a momma dog on the side of the road and her puppy in the middle of the road. He stopped to get the pup out of the road when some busy body lady pulled over and yelled at him,

'YOU DIDN'T LET THOSE DOGS OUT ON THE STREET DID YOU?'

I mean a nicer way of inquiring, would of been to ask if he needed help? She just assumed he was dumping dogs.
Sometimes in peoples zeal to help animals they can be down right nasty and stupid, my husband (Who is not the animal lover in the family but tollerates them) was so pissed he told her he didn't know whose dogs they were and he left.
Had this nit wit not stopped and been nasty he may of put them in the car and brought them to me to help.
I don't fault him for leaving, although he is loving and kind to the animals we have, he would just assume not have any if he were single.
He had just got the hesitant momma dog to allow him to pet her when this goof ball pulled over and yelled at him. He had been petting the puppy.

I did talk to him about, yes she was in the wrong but so was he, he could of said:
'Ma'am, I stopped to help cause the pup was in the middle of the road, now do you want to get off your high horse and help or leave?'

Just wanted to share that and vent, I think they were both in the wrong. Had I seen it, I would of pulled over and assumed they were the persons and offered to help, this way not seeming accusing yet helping.

Helpful Groups & Dogs in Need / Update on Mozart
« on: September 03, 2006, 12:10:52 pm »
Just to let you all know, Mozart is doing wonderfully and has fit in perfectly with our family.
He is such a gentle, poliet and loving dog.
I feel very blessed to have him in my life.
Him and my pitbull are great friends and he is gentle with the cats and has no desire to bother my livestock.
He's a sweetie and I am so thankful I was able to adopt him.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Doggie Day Cares
« on: August 29, 2006, 01:46:22 pm »
Has anyone out here had much experience with Doggy Day Cares? OK after just a week my Deaf Dane is driving me nuts.
I know he has to have me in his sights but today he is driving me nuts and Niki has to follow so I have 2 dogs tailing me. We have an excellent kennel nearby who offers doggy day care.
They even have outdoor play areas and seperate big rooms if you just want your dogs to be together and not others.
(Since Mozart is deaf and may have wobblers, just him and Niki in a room pr play area is an idea.)

I am seriously considering this 2 times a month to give me a little break.
Would like to know what others experiences have been with this type service.

Newfoundland Discussions / Tell me about your Newfie?
« on: August 29, 2006, 01:31:45 pm »
Hello all, I have a female pit and a male dane.
I have always wanted either a Newfie or a Saint.
Our home and our hearts are big enough for 3 so in the future I'd like to consider a Newfie or a Saint.
May be next week, 6 months or 2 years from now. Who knows ;D

I'm researching the breed, please tell me all about your Newfie's please.

After reading about the pup a person on here is fostering
that wobbles, and other post, and seeing what I have personally seen in my life.

I know all rescues, public and private and bursting at the seams and turning animals away.
A lot of us spend mucho bucks $$$$$ on animals with defects and ilnnesses.

Wouldn't all that money be better spent on huge spay and neuter programs?
Now don't get me wrong, I have a deaf dane with possible wobblers here I love and will most likely be spending much time and $$$$ on to give him the best quality of life I can.
I have spoken with his breeder and they don't breed the 2 harls they have due to 2 deaf puppies in the litter.
(Mozart and a female)
The man said he didn't know what Wobblers, OCD or HOD was.
He bred, he showed and doesn't know what these are !!!!!!

But getting back to the main subject.
Would it at times, not be much better to just put them down from the begining? Where does one draw the line?
I'm looking to hear folks opinions and views.
I see so much money being spent on animals, see so many who won't get off their lazy butts to get their animals fixed.
It breaks my heart. I know there are many of us who will take in these special needs animals but there is more of them that there are of us.
There was a lady on a pc group advertizing 3 litters of kittens and I called and offered to pay for the momma cats spayings and she declined.
However I am trying to pay for two spayings a month as my part in helping the over population. Sadly that is just 24 a year. And the average person can't afford that.
I am also personally starting a spay and neuter project in my own state.
But getting back to the main point.
1) Are these dollars spent on fixing special needs animals better spent on spaying and neutering?
2) Where does one draw the line on deciding to put an animal down or adopt it out?
Forgive my ramblings, however this subject hits me in the heart.

I am so happy and so pleased with Mozart.

He is excellent with Niki and he hasn't even
seemed the least bit interested in the cats
(We have 6 running around the house.)
I do have the litter boxes where neither he or Niki can't get to them, I hate it when dogs eat Kitty Roca'sĀ  :P grosssss

Thank you Cricket for Mozart, thank you so much.
I am so pleased and so in love with this boy.
I don't know how to post pics so I'll email you a CD with pics of him and Niki together. You can post them for me if you'd like.
Thank you for being a part of something
wonderful in my life. I pray all Alabama danes find you. hehe
