Great Dane Discussions / Re: Deaf Danes
« on: August 25, 2006, 04:41:19 am »
Mozart is 18 months and a major velcro dane.
It took a couple days getting use to as my other danes had not been like this. They were also not pups
(I consider anything under 2 a pup) and they were not deaf.

I did contact the trainer at the above mentioned site.
They offer one on one with the dog and owner, however it is 10 weeklt sessions and I am a 6 hour round trip from them.
I'm going to email them today and ask if I come down there with him for a week to 10 days and stay at a local motel, can we do the 10 sessions in a short time. It may not be practical. (May be to much for Mozart to handle.)

I am so happy and so pleased with Mozart.

He is excellent with Niki and he hasn't even
seemed the least bit interested in the cats
(We have 6 running around the house.)
I do have the litter boxes where neither he or Niki can't get to them, I hate it when dogs eat Kitty Roca's  :P grosssss

Thank you Cricket for Mozart, thank you so much.
I am so pleased and so in love with this boy.
I don't know how to post pics so I'll email you a CD with pics of him and Niki together. You can post them for me if you'd like.
Thank you for being a part of something
wonderful in my life. I pray all Alabama danes find you. hehe

Actually since I posted I see where I can check messages
cause it says 0 messages.
I am unsure how to send, so if anyone can tell me please do.

We live in the country on 5 acres and it's just my husband and I. We have a 5 1/2 y/o pittie and an 18 mon deaf dane
(you may of seen Crickets and my posts about Mozart)
We are willing to take in a 3rd (indoor dog) then need to call it quits.
Other than we do really need a LGD. But then a LGD wouldn't be in the house.
It has to be a pup or an adult someone can vouch for that is 100000000% OK with cats as we have a few indoor cats.So a pup would be better and I would prefer the next one be a male.

I have room for one more would be interested in
either a Saint pup or a Bernese.
A male pup would be best.
I'm on the west coast however I can arrange transportation .
I'm unsure how to send messages on here.
Let me know how to contact you. Thanks

I would love to hear stories, advice, tips and
such from other deaf Dane owners.
Mozart came into my life today, he is my 3rd or 4th Dane on my life. (I'm 45)
and my first deaf dane.
He is so wonderful.
I'd like to hear what folks are doing to help their
deaf Danes with anything.

I want you all to know, when Mozart got off the rig, he acted like he had just been around the block.
No stress, no limping. now fear, you can tell Ron took
wonderful care of him.
Can you even imagine the responsability involved in a cross country trip with a deaf dog?
Ron aced it with flying colors.
If anyone uses him please tell him Cara (lady who got the deaf GD Mozart) refered you.
His price was lower than airfare.

Great Dane Discussions / Where to buy dane sweaters?
« on: August 14, 2006, 03:23:00 pm »
We are moving with our pit and dane to Alaska.
The winter temps can be so cold and harsh.
Was wondering if anyone knew anyone who
makes dane sweaters?

I know what my heart says
and I know what my mind says,

I guess I just need a little positive
feed back I am doing the right thing.
But I can handle it if someone doesn't agree.
Long story short.......
Niki (Pit Bull) entered my life as my granddawg  :)
about 5 1/2 yrs back, I always babysat her when my son and his wife went out of town, vacations, week-end.
About 18 months ago my son asked me to watch her for up to 3 months while they settled down on the east coast (I live on the west coast) I gladly accepted the job.
5 months later I was getting so attached, 3 months turned to 5 and 5 to 6 and 7.
I asked to keep her and they decided it was in her best interest to leave the dog with me since they worked the same shifts and the dog would be alone 8 to 10 hours a day.
I was home full time and Niki was always going places with me and my husband. She sleeps with us, we have spoiled her rotten.
My son has on 2 or 3 occasions asked for her back.
He just called me tonight asking for her back after we found a lump on her leg. You can tell he was near tears.
I told him, my heart feelings aside
NO cause I didn't think it was in her best interest.
Here are my reasons
1) When she came into my care my grandson was 2 months old, he is now soon to be 2 y/o
she has not been raised with kids although good with them.
2) I am home full time and they are gone 6:30 am to 4 pm
or longer at times. Yes they have a fenced in yard, but bored dogs are ones who dig and jump on my opinion.
3) I love her and DANG IT I have had her since Feb 05.

I feel bad saying no to my son. (He's 27)
I wish I could comfort him.
I truly don't believe after all this time to send her to a place where she'll be alone Mon thru Fri 8 hours plus is all that great. They never fed her table scraps and I do all the time, they were quite strict with her and I am not as strict.
Now she knew my son the first 3 yrs of her life and was trained by him.
Selfish heart says NO WAY
Motherly heart says  Son I don't want to hurt you.
I know you love this dog.

Thank you all for the warm welcome
I'd also like to ask if anyone has time
(cause I am frecking out)
to jump up to the medical section and check
out the post:

'Found lump on my Pit's back leg'

Cause we just found a lump on Nikita's back thigh.
Oh and Cricket....... .
Mozart will be an Alaskan boy,
hubby and I decided last night we are leaving in 3 to 4
weeks to spend the whole winter in a log cabin
with a toasty wood stove and see the northern lights,
ice fish and going to the gym each day and enjoying life and our critters for 5 months
Was just decided late this afternoon.

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Found lump on my Pit's back leg UPDATE
« on: August 14, 2006, 02:35:47 pm »

I'm hoping till I can get my pitbull to the vet on Friday some one out here can give me some insight cause although calm on the surface I am FREAKING OUT !!!!!!! :o

Took my pit to the groomers to get her nails sanded down (she hates them cut)
Its a regular $5. every 10 days ritual
The lady noticed my girl had a lump on the back of her mid to upper thigh.
It is about the size of, if you took a a mellon baller and made a mellon ball. There is no hair on it,
but the woman freaked me out when she mentioned the
T word  Tumor  :oMaybe it's a spider bite.
It is not mushy nor is it hard.
It's not open or oozing.
Any ideas?
I was hoping more a spider bit than a tumor.
I feel bad I didn't notice it, but I don't usually go petting her back legs.
