Mixed Breed Discussion / Rosie update =)
« on: April 05, 2005, 11:22:50 am »
Hi everyone - just thought I'd post new rather than scroll thru all those replies (btw, thanks everyone for them!). We've been doing MUCH research on the info some of you gave us, and this is what we've come up with. We really think that Rosie is a Rhodesian Ridgeback/ Great Dane/ Lab. The research we did on Ridges was ASTOUNDING! Not only did SO many of the pics favor her, but the characteristic s of the Ridge fit her WAY too well! With the Danes, she has some of those characteristic s as well - someone who replied to my first post said that when Danes mouth-fight with another dog, they sound like Chewbacca from Star Wars!  :D That is EXACTLY what she sounds like when she wrestles with her 'sister' Lucy! Plus Rose does look a bit like a Dane as well - I liked the member who talked about her daughter's Scooby Doo picture, that was so cute! We call Rose 'Spooky Doo' sometimes cause she's a big scardy cat!  ;D And even tho the pound told us she was full-breed Lab  ??? we think she has Lab in her least! So thats the final analysis on that.  :)

Now I have another question for anyone who wants to offer advice on the subject. Rosie, Lucy and my family are currently sharing our home with my parents, and probably will be for the next year or two. My mom has a male 13 yr-old West Highland Terrier named Captain. Captain and Rosie generally get along, but unfortunately Rosie has turned on him a couple of times, barking, snapping, lips curled and lunging at him. Each time, this has had to do with food. Not their dog food - they all get fed at the same time and there is no problem. It has been over completely random things. Once it was over them getting dog biscuits. Another time it was when Rosie stold an open tuna can off the counter, then Captain got near her. A couple of times it was when someone was eating in the living room, once being Super Bowl Sunday. We usually eat in the kitchen, and she NEVER pays any attention to us then, although the others beg. Since that has happened more than once, now no one eats in the lliving room anymore. Obviously, with the age difference and size difference, this is a problem. We try to anticipate what will set her off and prevent it, but as I said, it is often random things. Unfortunately, on the Super BOwl night, she cut Captain's ear and he bled. These attacks do not happen often, but we are just afraid that Rosie might REALLY hurt Captain sometime. Anyone have any idea why she does this? Also, if anyone can offer any advice on what to do about it that would be great too. Eventually, Rosie and Captian won't be living in the same house together, but as for now, we need to try and keep the peace! Thanks

Here's my Rosie when we first brought her home from the pound. She was 3 months old and all PUPPY.   :)

Rottweiler Pictures / Re: Rottweilers

Everybody's Rotties are just BEAUTIFUL!  ;D I have been friends with a few Rotts in my life and I think they are just wonderful dogs. Where I live in Oklahoma though they have a bit of a bad rep, people thinking that they are viscious breed (of course, this isn't true and its all in the training or lack thereof). There is a lot of illegal dog fighting that goes around here though and I think that adds to the scare. Was wondering, do Rotts get a bad rep in other parts as well?

Welcome to Big paws only website - Your dog "Rosie" is quiet big and very beautiful!!! - Do she have a long tail or short????

I think she is part of Rhodesian Ridgeback because of her colour as she have red wheaten colour but she dosen't have the line marking on her back - Rosie is not part of Staffy breed because she have a nice muzzle, long, deep and powerful shape but she dosen't have the line marking on her back - She may be cross with Lab and part of a Weimaraner or bit of great dane - Hard to tell what breed she is but it could say that she is cross with 3 different breeds....

Thanks for the welcome! Rosie has a VERY long slightly fluffy tail. I have never seen a Rhodesian Ridgeback before (I will be looking it up though), but when Rosie gets scared or barks, she has a line of fur that stands STRAIGHT up on the top of her head and all the way down her back. Would that be like a Ridgeback or do other breeds do that too? I have another dog Lucy who is a small Heinz 57-no TELLING what she is! But she is smallish and looks alot like a dingo or a fox and is the EXACT same color as Rosie. The hair on Lucy's back will stand up when she barks sometimes, but just in one little spot and not all the way up and down like Rosie. I had someone else tell me she looked like she had Dane in her when she was younger, but I thought maybe she isn't big enough to have Dane in her? I guess she still has time to grow though. One more thing about Rosie, she "talks" a lot. Makes LOTS of funny noises that go up and down from low mumbles to high whining sounds. Is very cute! Don't know if that says anything about her breeds either.

Thanks to everyone for all your feedback and for all your sweet words for Rosie. I told them all to her and she gives you all big sloppy kisses!  ;D

I'm going to search through my breed book tonight at home.  I want to give her a big kiss on her nose, though!!  :-*
Thanks ahead of time for looking! And thanks for appreciating that great big nose of hers!  :) You would never BELIEVE The amount of noise she makes breathing sometimes. And she snores louder than ANYTHING I've ever heard!  :o I will be sure to giver her that kiss for you, too.  ;D

I think the bigger question is what is she?  I found it very very interesting that her instict was to go stick her head in the cold water to get the bubbles, yes it is very cute but more importantly I think that behavior is a big clue as to what breed she favors.  I'm not sure what breeds that is typical of but I wonder if there are breeds that were breed to behave as fisherman so to speak?  My dog is affraid of water he barks when someone uses the toilet (not so cute) or takes a bath and will not go out while rain is falling.
Thats a good point. I will have to look up to see if I can find out about any kind of "fishing dogs." She has always really loved water. When it rains, all she wants to do is go outside and run around in it! And she LOVES to splash in puddles!  :D

Awww - thank you!  :D
We sure think so!
Yours is a big ol beauty too! ;D

Hello everyone -
I found this site linked from my Yahoo/SBC home pg. I just love it, and this is already my 3rd post tonight. Now, I LOVE really big dogs, but I am not sure if I HAVE one or not!  :-\ Maybe some of you can help me.

This is Rosie, and we rescued her from the pound last year. The poor little girl was just 3 mos old and was 2 days away from being put down! When we adopted her they told us she was a full breed Lab, just w/o papers. Well, we have come to realize she is NOT a full breed Lab, as everyone who has met her agrees that she doesn't look like it. She is actually taller than the typical Lab but not as stocky.

What I would like to hear is anyone's opinion on what else they think she looks like she is mixed with. She is 5 mos old in the pic of her laying down. In the other she is 10 mos old, and I don't know if you can see it, but she has ice on her whiskers! There is a dent in the backyard that fills up when it rains, and then it froze over. Well, Rose saw the bubbles underneath and started trying to catch them, found a hole in the ice and stuck her head in! Such a cutie!  :D

Anyways, she is a yr old now, and about 60-70 lbs. I know she may keep growing for awhile or she may stop now, depending on what breeds she is. Thanks for your input!  :)

Bills & Other Legislative Acts / Re: What is going on with PETA?
« on: March 30, 2005, 12:57:20 am »
This is HORRIBLE. I hadn't heard of this yet. It seems like, I don't know... GENOCIDE sort of, doesn't it? I mean, if a dog has to be by law spade or neutered just because of its breed, won't that pretty much prevent the breed from reproducing altogether, and then won't that breed perish altogether?
I HOPE that this never goes thru, but as someone pointed out, politicians like to jump on things just to gain popularity. There is a lot of paranoia and finger-pointing that goes on these days, and I know that people are very quick to judge w/o all the facts, as long as they can say that clearly, over there is the 'bad guy.' There already is a lot of misconception when it comes to pit bulls, and people have a tendency to immediately say they are all bad. In my state (OK), by law the pound can't adopt out a pit and has to put it down immediately. Also many realtors won't rent out to people with pits, rotts, german shepherds or dobermans. So I know there is already a somewhat antagonistic feel towards these dogs in many places.

There are no bad children and there are no bad dogs. If there are behavorial problems, the parents/owners hold responsibility towards helping to create them and therefore must fix them. I too think that our society is putting the emphasis on the wrong part of the problem here. And SHAME on PETA for doing this! I don't understand that at all! I thought they were supposed to be there to protect our pets, not villify them.
