Bullmastiff Discussions & Pictures / Re: Christmas came early for hubby...

He's such a doll. I love the wrinkled up eyebrows. He looks so serious. More pics...more pics. :D

Since I have three kids ages 9-12 of course we have a lot of kids that come over. After the initial greeting, the kids see that they aren't a pack of Cujos and everyone's fine.

My neighbors have one girl about 13 and two boys about 9 and 10. When they come over, Simon is fine with the girl and the 10 year old boy. But if the 9 year old comes over, the hair on Simon's back immediately raises. Simon has even nipped him on the back of the leg. It didn't break skin, but I have never seen him act that way with a child. He is submissive to all of my kids and my husband and I. But if that kid comes around, he totally ignores all of us and heads straight for him. Since the nipping thing, I have told the little boy that he can't come in our yard if the dogs are out (which I don't mind because he's a brat). BTW Heidi doesn't like him either. She just avoids him and goes over by my kids when he comes in the yard.

I just want to know if any of you have had your dogs act this way with a particular person. I haven't seen this boy be mean to the dogs. And I am always out with the dogs if there are kids outside. I'm just perplexed. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Re: Afraid of Harley???????

Poor Harley...all he wants is some loving. My house is the same way. Most kids that come over are ok. But there are a few that have come over once and haven't come back because of my "ferocious" doggies. Oh well...they're the ones missing out on some giant sized loving. Tell Harley he can come visit us and all three of my kids would love some loving from him! :D

I haven't posted any this week, I've had too much homework and an essay exam. So no time for fun on the internet...jus t research. But I did get some great pics of the dogs playing. Nicholas just blends right in. He and Heidi are buddies now. She didn't play with him the first few days we had him but now they just cut loose. Simon now has turned into the mature gentleman. He just looks at them like he's shaking his head.

Hey Lyn. Sorry to hear about the tackling you took. But I've got to tell you...it did sound hilarious. Hilarious, because I could see it happening in my house too...So don't feel bad.  ;) Sometimes makes you wonder why they're called "Saints". LOL

I know you've said that Bubba has been really passive when a female is in heat, but if he's starting to get more "anxious" you might want to go ahead and get him fixed. Simon was 16 months and has done great. But before he was fixed, he was he** on wheels when a female went into heat. He has definitely calmed since then.

I haven't heard about letting the giants get to age 2 before fixing them. I always thought it was good to do it early because it could prevent certain cancers. But either way...good luck!!! And keep us in the loop on how those beautiful Saints of yours are doing.

Breeding Questions & Information / Re: Paying for breeding rights?

I'd pay at 8wks only if they extended a guarantee to stipulate that I get my "additional fee back" if despite my best efforts, the pup did not develop into a perfect candidate by 2 yrs of age, for that purpose.

I totally agree. We made that mistake with Simon and are out the extra money we paid now that we can't breed him. We can't reach the breeder despite our best efforts and have spent over $1500 trying to get his health to what it should be.

with giant breeds so many things can go wrong simply from the food they were fed the environment and lack of excersise, so than the dog doesnt end up turning out, and why should we pay for the owners lack of coachability, lack of understanding how crucial it is for them to listen to our well directed advice.

I agree also. The breeder can only do so much. A lot lies with the owners and how they take care of their puppy. Especially with giant breeds, there is a lot that you have to be mindful of with their health and nutrition. If an owner does not listen to the recommendation s of the breeder, the breeder should not be responsible.

This guy sounds like an idiot. First of all complaining that it's too expensive for him to get his dog neutered and then expecting the female's owners to get her spayed is stupid. I believe it actually costs more to get a female done than a male. For males it's just a snip-snip. For females it's a surgery.

Second of all, after my experience with Simon not being neutered and Heidi in heat, I know that a male will do ANYTHING to get to a female in heat. I have half of a bathroom door to prove that.

And as for the neighbor with the female in heat on a tie out...he's just asking for trouble. That's like cutting your leg and standing in a pool of sharks. She's irresistible to intact males (at least some  ;)) Thankfully not yours.  ;D

Discussions & Information on Grooming / Re: grooming help

I agree with Patti. A good long walk can do wonders. I have to do that before I clip Simon's nails. Otherwise I can't do it by myself.

Breeding Questions & Information / Re: Paying for breeding rights?

I know some of you may disagree with my opinion but I feel I need to weigh in on this. I paid for breeding rights or rather full AKC registration for both Heidi and Nicholas. In both of their litters there were pups who were pet quality and those with the "potential" to show. Those with potential were sold with full registration and a 2 year contract, those who were pet quality were sold only with limited registration and a spay/neuter contract. Not to mention, neither breeder I worked with would ever replace my puppies. If there is a problem, they will refund my money to help with vet costs. They would never think of taking our dogs back separating them with the family they have known and love. I work with professional breeders, who have been breeding for years with only quality dogs. They are there for me whatever I need. I don't feel like they are BYB. Both show their animals and know how to spot quality dogs. You definitely need to research any breeder you work with. Simon's breeders were definitely BYBs out to make a buck. But we have learned so much since then. And we wouldn't trade Simon for anything. He has been a learning experience in itself.

Hi everyone. Just wanted to share some pics of Nicholas's homecoming. Everything went great and Simon is so concerned about Nicholas. It's so sweet.

Chloe is so beautiful. She looks like she's right at home. I also love the name!!! It fits her perfectly!

I don't know if this will work, but maybe you could get a can of compressed air (like computer cleaner). Heidi absolutely hates it blown on her. I don't know if it's the noise or the blowing...but it works on her at least. And she was pretty hard to train.

We weren't supposed to get him until next week, but the breeder asked if we wanted him this week. Of course, we said yes! It'll be either Fri. or Sat. She's just got to set up the flight. We can't wait!
