My pup is 4 months old. I have started socialization the second week I got her. She is graduating from the Puppy Class next week. I am taking her with me anywhere I go...gas station, friends, parks, etc. Make sure that your pup is not scared of different sounds like vacuum, dropping pans, cars. If see that the dog is scared DO NOT comfort him/her and let her/him figure out the situation by herself. The dog has to understand that the sound is not going to hurt.
We just got back from CT. We drove for 7 hours each way. My pup slept the whole way. We took her to the nursing home to visit out grandpa for the first time. Oh, boy, was I proud of my dog. She was so polite to everyone. She was just sitting for petting and not moving at all (she is only 4 month!). Everybody was in love with her.
I think that well socialized Great Pyrenees dogs make wonderfull therapy dogs. Good luck!

How big is he and what kind of crate size you are looking for?
Do you have lots of toys for him? With my pup I use tons of chewing things so every time when she is about to chew on something we don't want her to chew on....I give her a toy. I make pretty big deal about it too. I have had my pup for 2 months and we have not had any single chewing accident...I don't say that she is not trying!
Do you exersize you dog? (Sorry, I don't want to sound like Cezar Milan) If you wear him down it sure helps to show him what you would like for him to chew on. You said that you put him outside...It's sounds like he is looking for attention. Another thing, we don't play is the house. House is for relaxing...We go hiking, running with playmates and just walking so by the time we get home...it's a nap time.
Do you feed him raw bones? It's the best way to make his jaw get tired.

Treatment & Preventative Meds / Shedding from Albon & Flagyl
« on: October 20, 2006, 06:20:22 am »
Hi guys! Our Vet had found intestinal parasites (coccidiosis) and put us on Flagyl and Albon. From the second day Lily had started shedding a lot! She is not bold or anything but... no matter how much I brush her the hair loss just doesn't stop. Have any of you had this kind of problem before?

Food Discussion & Information / Re: Raw diet help needed

It seems like your biggest problem is not a BARF but the irresposible breeder you got your dog from. I know a lots of people who have very positive experience with raw diet. Yes, there is no guarantee that your dog will get the perfect amount of minerals and vitamins but what about people...how many of us eat perfectly balanced meals?
If you do a comprehensive research you will find out how many dogs suffer various illnesses due to low quality dog food or food too high in supplements which damage dogs later in life.
The only righ thing that we all can do as resposible dog owners is to be informed.

Food Discussion & Information / Raw diet help needed
« on: October 16, 2006, 09:56:27 am »
Hi everyone! I am in a great need of help.
I have a 14 weeks old puppy. We have started her with Solid Gold Wolf Cub and now changing to Innova Large Breed Formula. Even though it's a high quality food I am not too happy with pup's health. I mean...she is very healthy. It's just that her breath stinks and she itches quite often.
I used to have a Newfoundland and he was on raw his whole life. He had never had any problems. I put him on raw when he was about a year old.
Now... with this puppy I am very scared to go on raw. I have no idea how to make sure that she will get all the vitamins and minerals. And how much should I feed her? As of now, I give her raw bones and cottage cheese, yogurt and bread...every other day or so. It seems like she could eat a lot more of raw food then of her kibble.
Could someone please tell me how to start and what to do?!
Thank you
