Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / I'm so confussed...
« on: August 09, 2007, 08:27:43 pm »
Okay so Gracie is having some potty problems.  She is now 1 year and 3 months old and (before this week) totally potty trained.  Well, this week has been really difficult to understand.  Gracie typically sleeps in her crate at night.  Well Monday and Tuesday morning I woke up to a stinky surprise in the crate with her.  It was not sick poo, so I am not worried about her having diarrhea as it's solid.  I just thought the first time that maybe I didn't walk her late enough and she just couldn't hold it.  Well when it happened again the next day I called the vet thinking maybe there could be a problem worth looking into or just to see if it sounds more behavioral.  His recommendation was to feed a little more in the morning and less at dinner time (which is at 5:30) and increase her exercise.  Breakfast is at 7 am by the way.  Our last walk is around 9:30 or 10 pm so I feel that is enough time to digest.  So that is exactly what we have done but to no help at all.  I even woke up around 2am this morning (I had to do that in the beginning of the housebreaking when she was a pup) in hopes that she would go before relieving herself inside. I've started to let her sleep out of the crate because it's actually easier to clean the steamers off the hardwoods over cleaning the crate.  Every morning this week I've gotten a surprise even with the early morning walk this morning.  So, my question is has anyone had a problem like this where they have seemed to have forgotten about the pee/poo outside only rule???  How did you correct it?  Oh, and here is a side note.  We can leave her out of the crate during the day while we are at work and we never have any problems.  I'm so confused...

I just wanted to pop in and see how everyone is doing.  I also noticed there are a lot of new whiskers and paws out here so I have a lot of catching up to do.  For all the BPO'ers who have joined since the last time I've logged on I would like to introduce myself.  I'm Misty and slave to Gracie Belle, 1 year three month old English Mastiff (AKA Princess) and Rosco, 6 month old hienz 57 (the person I got him from told me he was a mix between a Rotti and a GSD.  I'm thinking not so much but he's perfect no matter what he is) and Linus the ruler of the roost.  He's my cat who's been with me for almost 6 years now.    I can't wait to catch up and see how everyone is doing and meet all the new pups.  I've really missed you guys and I've got some issues I'd like to run past you all (I'll do that in another thread)  Sadly I don't have very many pictures of my fur kids that I haven't posted already but I've got a couple that will do for now.  It's good to be back and it's especially good to see all the pups again.

Groans, Gripes, Brags & Boasts / Gracie's a Good Citizen
« on: May 30, 2007, 10:57:24 pm »
After a six-week CGC prep course Gracie and I took the Canine Good Citizen exam and Gracie received her CGC certification.  I honestly can't believe that she did as it appeared as though I was giving her the commands in Martian.  Seriously the girl didn't even acknowledge I was the ring half the time (that is if you compare the exam to an obedience trial standard).  At one point she seemed so bored that I swear she was about to lie down and take a nap. When she wasn't stretching or yawning she was scavenging for remnants of a treat on the floor.  Since you can't use treats during the exam to help encourage the dog to sit or give you their attention, she took it upon herself to seek them out elsewhere since I wasn't packing.  That made it sort of difficult to keep a loose lead.  Thank goodness we were able to wander a bit in between exercises. I'm just glad it wasn't an obedience trial, as we for sure would have been asked to just get out of the ring. LOL.  But all in all, she was very sweet, and welcoming and not at all skiddish or even the slightest bit of aggressive.  Obedient?  Well, she didn't jump on anyone or bark or even pull me around thank goodness.  She also didn't show too much interest in the other dogs she had never seen before which was very cool. So WAY TO GO to Gracie Belle. I'm very proud of my good little citizen.

My sweet baby girl is a year old today.  I can't believe it's already been 8 months with Gracie and it literally only seems like we just got her.  She's been such a joy for us and her sweet personality is infectious.  I have yet to meet someone who's been able to resist her charm.  Unlucky for her we have a CGC prep class tonight and she will have to hold off on the celebrating until she sits and stays a couple of times.  I did make some pup cakes to share with her classmates after class in honor of her birthday so I'm sure she wont be too disappointed.  We plan on having all her puppy friends meet us this Saturday at one of her favorite dog parks to really celebrate.  Happy 1st Birthday Princess.  I love you so much.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Dremel question
« on: May 15, 2007, 10:20:31 pm »
I just bought a dremel so that I can groom Gracie and Rosco's nails.  My question is there are so many attachments to it and I do not know which piece is the best to use on Gracie's GIANT TALON like nails and if that would be okay to use on Rosco's tiny little tips?  There are stone attachments and sand paper attachments and the truth is, I have no idea which one works better than the other.  I know a lot of you use them and I thought I would ask what works best for you.  Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Group Discussions & Photos / Mothers Day Outing LOTS of pics.
« on: May 12, 2007, 11:27:44 pm »
Aeryk and I spent Mothers Day with my mom yesterday at her place in the Woodlands.  The community has a man made pond dug out and the dog's love to play and swim in the "lake".  We have had the pleasure of having Baux with us this week so he of course was there to join in all the fun with Gracie and Rosco.  Rosco isn't so sure of the water just yet but I'm sure that once he's a bit older and a tad braver, he'll be swimming in no time.  Here they are, the play time and post play time (my favorite time).

This is so cute and odd.  Think I'll add a pony to my pack.  Well, maybe not.

I wish I could say these two belonged to me but they don't. I found them on the net looking at cute pictures.  I still thought they were worth posting because nobody could appreciate these pictures like BPO'ers.

Book Club & Noteworthy Reads / Amazing Gracie by Dan Dye
« on: April 12, 2007, 07:59:07 am »
I wanted to share with you a book I read titled Amazing Gracie written by Dan Dye. Dan Dye is one of the Co-owners of Three Dog Bakery (the original all natural bakery for dogs) and the book as well as the company, Three Dog Bakery was inspired by his deaf Great Dane, Gracie.

All proceeds from the purchase of the book goes to the Gracie Foundation, which offers financial assistance to non-profit dog rescue organizations. So not only is it entertaining it's beneficial to rescues. Here is a link with a little information about the Gracie Foundation.

I started to read the book Tuesday night around 10:30 and looked at the clock to see it was after 1 a.m.  I couldn't put the book down.  When I woke up yesterday (tired of course) my only clear thought was to bring the book with me so I could read it at the office when I had some down time.  I finished it yesterday afternoon.

It's a very sweet story of friendship, success and the loss of a loved one.  It also will make you laugh at all the puppy antics we've all been through.

Oh, and my Gracie LOVES Three Dog Bakery's cookies.

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Question about No Mate Spray
« on: April 10, 2007, 03:38:17 am »
So my baby girl Gracie is becoming a woman.  She is showing signs of her first heat cycle. My issue is we are taking a pre-novice obedience course and I the final class is next Monday so I had hoped her cycle would have held off until then as the next opening for her surgery would have been the following Tuesday.  No such luck but that's okay.  Since we take the class with other dogs and some are in tact I want to make everyone is as comfortable as possible.  My question is about No Mate Spray.  First, has anyone heard of this spray and how useful is it and second, where can I find it?  She will be wearing britches of course as that is a rule for the club when bitches come into season.  Though I thought being next Monday is Pre-Novice Graduation class I would hate to create such a distraction for the other dogs.  Any help would really be appreciated.

So the bluebonnets are blooming here in TX and it's this time of year when you drag your kids out to the sides of the highway to take some snap shots of their pretty faces in the bluebonnets.  Gracie and Bo were no exception.  Bo did great posing and Gracie mostly wanted to just roll around in all the flowers.  I think the pollen gives her the zoomies.  Here they are.

If not you MUST.  I love him.  I especially love the way his owners capture his personality.  He's adorable.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Dog Day at the Park
« on: March 21, 2007, 06:16:06 am »
It has been a long time since I've posted any pictures and thought I'd share some of Gracie's most favorite thing to do and favorite buddies as well.  The tri-Aussie is Beaux, also a BPO'er and the other Aussie, Sweetpea, is one of her obedience classmates.  The brindle guy is Harley also an obedience classmate.  He's her favorite but don't tell Sweetpea cause it may hurt her feelings...
