Food Discussion & Information / Protecting Butt's food from the pup
« on: January 12, 2007, 12:12:03 am »
Butt is a very picky eatter.I finally got him to start eatting on his own and now came the pup.Butt gets 1 can of Cal. Naturals with 2 cups of dry food(C.Naturals and Innova mixed).I generally put this out about 7:30 at night for him to eat. Some nights he eats it all other nights he eats part and sometime during the night will finish it off. That was all before the thieving pup came along.Last night Butt ate half his food and a while later the pup went and gobbled the rest down. I have only been giving the pup the dry mix,he gets 1 cup 4 times a day. This afternoon about 4 Butt came to me with the I'm hungrey Mama whine.I mixed his food up for him and locked the pup up.Still the only way I could get him to eat was to hand feed it to him.So do I need to feed the Pup more or is Butt's food just too much of a temptation because he gets can too? Do I hand feed Butt during the day and only put his food back out when the Pup is locked up? Any thoughts or ideas?? Sorry so long :( Thanks again.

« on: January 08, 2007, 09:26:59 am »
Well Sat. I went and picked up Butt's new puppy. He's 10 wks and weighs 25 lbs,and is sooooooooo cute!!! Butt isn't 100% sure about him yet though,so I'm limiting their contact for now.He doesn't have a name yet,I was thinking either Mutt or Wutt, but think they are too close to Butt for when I want to call one of them.Right now I'm just calling him Pup,so any name ideas?? And any advice on potty training, leash training or anything else I need to know about puppies would be appreciated. He re's a few pics of the little scamp.

Games & Jokes / Pet Rules
« on: January 05, 2007, 08:21:46 pm »
I got this in an email from my Mom and thought it was cute.I did modify a few things to include my birds.I can't leave them out, they can scream and bite harder then Butt can!!!

PET RULES

To be posted VERY LOW on the refrigerator door - nose heightor next to the cages.

  Dear Dogs and Birds,

The dishes with the paw and claw prints are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food.

Please note, placing a paw or claw print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.

The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Beating me to the bottom is not the object.

Tripping me doesn't help because I fall faster than you can run.

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort. Dogs can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other stretched out to the fullest extent possible.I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm.

For the last time, there is not a secret exit from the bathroom. If by some miracle I beat you there and manage  to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine,  bark, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge and try to pull the door open. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years --canine attendance is not required.

The proper order is kiss me, then go smell the other dog butts. I cannot stress this enough!

To pacify you, my dear pets, I have posted the following message on our front door:

To All Non-Pet Owners Who Visit & Like to Complain About My Pets:

  1. They live here. You don't.

  2. If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture. That's why they call it "fur"niture.

  3. I like my pets a lot better than I like most people.

  4. To you, it's an animal. To me, he/she is an adopted son/daughter who is short, hairy, walks on all fours and doesn't speak clearly.Or screams as loud as he/she can, bites any foreign fingers entering their cages and with birds,"shit" does really happen!!!

  Remember:
Dogs and birds are better than kids because they:
  1. Eat less
  2. Don't ask for money all the time
  3  Are easier to train
  4. Normally come when called
  5. Never ask to drive the car
  6. Don't hang out with drug-using friends
  7. Don't smoke or drink
  8. When they misbehave they can be locked in a cage and I won't have CPS called on me.
  9. Don't want to wear your clothes
  10. Don't need a gazillion dollars for college,
  and...
  11. If they get pregnant, you can sell their
  children

Saint Bernard General Discussions / First bath at home today
« on: January 05, 2007, 06:36:35 pm »
When Butt came here to live he was nothing but a big matted stinky mess,so he went to the grommers and was shaved down. During the summer he kept getting hot spots so I kept him shaved.I noticed in the last week he was starting to smell like a dog,so I knew it was time for a bath.I hate taking him to the groomers,he is gone all day and I don't know about him,but I have seperation anxiety.Well he hates water,he will even leave the room if I turn the water on to brush my teeth. My ex husband offered to come over and try to give him a shower.I pullled him and he pushed him in,but we got him in the shower. He stood pretty good with Mama keeping a loose hold on his collar. After we were done showering I blew some of the excess water off him with the shop vac. Then he was let loose, what a maniac!!!! He kept flopping on the floor rolling around trying to get the offending water off him. Then he targetted my bed :( Needless to say my bed had to be stripped down and washed because everything was soaked.I think once it was over,he actually didn't mind it and was happy he got to stay home for a shower.I know I like the smell of him better showered at home, then when he comes home from the groomer.Hey you never know we might get the hang of this yet and I might even be able to shave him down and save myself the $80 :) Sorry so long, still being a fairly new Mama to a dog I'm easily amused :D

Saint Bernard General Discussions / Anyone want to pick out a puppy??
« on: January 04, 2007, 10:33:39 am »
I found a breeder in my area with 2 puppies available. This is the info I have so far:The pups are ten weeks today and are big, cuddly bears.  I have one boy and one girl left.  The pups have been wormed regularly and have their first and second shots.  They have also had their dew claws removed. Now for the pics( I hope): the girl is the top pic,the boy the bottom.

Saint Bernard General Discussions / Should you have more then one dog???
« on: January 03, 2007, 09:11:33 am »
With my birds it is better for them to be in a flock then to be single pets. How about with dogs?? Don't get  me wrong I don't want a whole pack of dogs, but would Butt be better off with a companion?? We are doing better with him learning to listen to me and me being the pack leader. However his attitude towards other people hasn't changed because of it. From what I have read he is still being dominate one and trying to protect me. That got me to wondering if him having his own dog would help?? If so older? puppy? male? female? Butt is a 3 1/2 yr old neutered male. Thanks, as always any advice is much appreciated.

Holiday Things / Saint Santa Bernard
« on: December 09, 2006, 07:15:13 am »
Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a Quaker.
The stockings were hung by the cages with care,
In hopes that Santa Bird soon would be there.

The fids were nestled all snug in their cages,
While visions of pistachios danced in their heads.
And mamma at her computer, with Butt at her feet,
Had just settled in to see what's on MT.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the computer to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight mighty Macaws.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be Santa Bird.
More rapid than eagles his Macaws they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

"Now Oz! now, Gazo! now, Avalon and Ha too!
On, Jesse! On, Samson!, on Dalila and Sidney!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the house-top the Macaws they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and Santa Bird too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The clicking and clattering of each little talon.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney Santa Bird came with a bound.

He was dressed all in Blue and Gold, from his head to his foot,
And his feathers were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.

His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nares like a cherry!
His droll little beak was drawn up like a bow,
And his face patch was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, As they flew out of sight,
"Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"

Hope no one minded me using their dogs names,I couldn't have Saint Santa Bernard being pulled by just Butt!!Imade this up orginally for my birds to read to them to at Christmas,so I thought Butt should have his own version too.Merry Christmas to all!!!!!

Food Discussion & Information / Food help needed with my Saint
« on: December 03, 2006, 12:09:14 pm »
Hi I'm Mom to Butt a 3 1/2 (??)yr old Saint Bernard, plus a zoo full of birds.I'm his 3rd home,I was told. The woman we got him from in March was getting rid of him because she moved to an apt and didn't have room for him anymore. She said she had him for a yr and had got him from a Saint rescue. My now ex husband brought him home,I am in no way a dog person. That was until I met and fell in love with Butt!!! When my ex moved out Butt stayed, because I was his choosen person. He was eatting Ol Roy dry mixed with a can of Ol Roy wet.In the last week he has really tapered down on not eatting.Monday he didn't eat at all.Tuesday we went off to the Vets. The Vet feels he may have a food allergy and inflmamed bowel syndrome. He switched him to Eukanuba Veterinary Diet Low Residue dry and wet.He is also on Reglan,15 mg twice a day and Pepcid Ac 20 mg once a day.The Vet has me mixing 3 cups dry to 1 can of wet.Since Tuesday I have been getting him to eat it if I offer it on my hand and slowly move my hand into the bowl and sneak it out once he is eatting.Even that way he has only ate about 3/4's of it.Yesterday afternoon when I was getting ready to feed my birds he came in acting hungray.I mixed 2 cups dry with 1 can of wet.He ate it all!!! Last night after the birds went to bed he was sniffing around again,so I mixed 2 cups of Ol Roy and 1 can of Ol Roy up to feed him.I have it all here and didn't want to just throw it all away. And figured it is cheap if I mix it up and he doesn't want it.Well he did eat it all again!!!Today he ate lunch and dinner with no issues(2 cups dry to 1 can of wet all Eukanuba today),so I am grateful to that.I have plenty of the dry food from the Vet left, but only 5 cans,so I will need to get him some more in the next day or so.I have most of name brand pet stores in my area as well as a few other mom and pop places,so I should have many choices.I will try to go check out what is available tomorrow.Ideas on what I should be looking for would be a great help.Oh and what kind of treats,I've been giving ol Roy treats too :( Thanks for all your help.

When my ex moved out Butt stayed, because I was his choosen person. In the last mth we have started having aggression issues with people who visit ie: barking, growling, tonight he even showed his teeth when he growled at my Mom.I believe it is probbaly him saying this is my house,my Mom and my birds,so just leave.I was wondering if this behavior is common in Saints?? Second issue we are having is him not wanting to eat.He was eatting Ol Roy dry mixed with a can of Ol Roy wet.In the last week he has really tapered down on not eatting.Monday he didn't eat at all.Tuesday we went off to the Vets. The Vet feels he may have a food allergy and inflmamed bowel syndrome. He switched him to Eukanuba dry and wet.He is also on Reglan,15 mg twice a day and Pepcid Ac 20 mg once a day.The Vet has me mixing 3 cups dry to 1 can of wet.Since Tuesday I have been getting him to eat it if I offer it on  my hand and slowly move my hand into the bowl and sneak it out once he is eatting.Even that way he has only ate about 3/4's of it.This afternoon when I was getting ready to feed my birds he came in actting hungrey.I mixed 2 cups dry with 1 can of wet.He ate it all!!! So are Saints picky eatters??Prone to food allergies??How much should he eat in a day??How often??And what kind of food do you feed or recommend?? Any info you give will be greatly appreciated,I love this boy dearly!!!!!
