Anything Non-Dog Related / New addition - sorry it has been a while
« on: February 27, 2008, 10:20:32 pm »
Hi guys, sorry it has been a while since I posted. I have been trying to catch up. We should have another BPO Baby coming October 15, 2008. I am 7 weeks pregnant.

Question for all other Big Paw mommies, did you get stupid questions when you were pregnant about your Big Paw? I am so tired of the questions.

Food Discussion & Information / Re: Food issues...again
« on: December 13, 2007, 07:56:27 pm »
NB Duck and Potato has chicken fat in it, if she is having issues I would try a sample of Pinnacle Duck and Potato. That is all that is in that one. With my old mal, Tonka, she had IBD, this was the only food she could tolerate as time goes on and she starts feeling better you may be able to experiment with treats (homemade treats I have various sites) but only one at a time. With eating, she will finally eat when she gets hungry if it goes beyond 2 days call the vet, but I would think since they said no chicken that chicken fat would be included as well.

Samoyed Discussions & Pictures / Re: Questions about Samoyeds???
« on: December 09, 2007, 07:21:46 pm »
I can note 2 to stay away from that are pretty much like Sammys are Malamutes and Huskies. I eat hair, sleep with it, you name it the hair is on it. But I LOVE MY DOG and after having 2 when I moved out I got my own. I usually tell people if you like a very clean house a northern breed is not for you. No matter how much you vaccum or brush them they do shed daily. My friend had a Samoyd and he was the sweetest dog ever, but just like my malamutes, when he blew his coat, it was like cotton candy falling off him!

Alaskan Malamute Pictures / Re: More little paws with Big Paws pics

adak loves his crate! he will voluntairly go get in it and lie down. It is hard to believe he is 9 mos now, where has the time gone??? I think we are pushing 70 lbs now ~24-25 inches at the shoulders too! He is a tall one, but I am keeping him pretty lean since he is still growing, I just started feeding him 2 cups of food twice a day. I swear he and mally think they are in love with each other, he was grooming her this morning when I was holding her.

Theses were too cute for me not to post. I swear Adak loves his crate! He is now 9 mos old.

Modified to add: the report is that they are now sleeping like this.

welcome, he is handsome! I have a 9 month old male malamute as well. They will go through a scared phase, as hard as it seems, do not cater to them during this time, they will work it out. As far as food, I personally feed Eagle Pack Holistic Lg. Breed Adult to Adak with wonderful results also I feed some raw, but do not feed raw and kibble in the same meal. He gets 1 1/2- 2 cups/twice per day, don't worry about underfeeding him, I would worry more about overfeeding as he is still growing. Definitely start him in training and socilization. Please PM me if you have any questions.

Again Welcome to BPO!

Treatment & Preventative Meds / Re: Neuter/Gastropexy?

I talked to Adak's breeder before hand and we decided that with the proper wait before and after exercise that it was not necessary for him. We did have food bloat once but I have been watching him like a hawk since then, I do 1 hr before and after of literally nothing, if he begins to get too hyper we go in the crate

unfortunately, I just found out this is a scam, the person that sent it to me emailed the lady and it bounced back. That is ridiculous

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Can anyone help?
« on: October 02, 2007, 02:52:01 pm »
BPO-I am reposting as i received this message today

Contact Cathy below if you are interested in a free puppy...

Can anyone help?

Friend of a friend rescued 6 black lab (mix) puppies out of the middle of the road on Saturday. PLEASE help find them homes - otherwise, it's Animal Control - which means they only have 5 days. We've bathed them, sprayed them for fleas and wormed them....but we can't keep them. They are currently in a kennel in my basement since I don't have a fence. I've lost count of the number of rescue groups that I've contacted, only to be turned down due to no room. Please check with every dog person you know to see if they need a puppy.

Alaskan Malamute Discussions / Update on Adak
« on: September 27, 2007, 06:06:17 pm »
Well as some of you know, I have/had 3 malamutes,  I only now own Adak, Tonka and Nala are now living fully with my ex, no sharing, and I will not see them. This was my decision as things were getting hard for all of the dogs. I had Nala for 2 days this week and she was so upset because she missed her sister, even at daycare she paced the gate and cried. I know this is the best decision for the dogs and Adak, well he could care less if he has a companion, he is a hog when it comes to attention anyway. I fully intend on, later down the road, getting a companion for him from the same breeder I got him from, I just can't beat the temperment he has, I love it! But this will be atleast a year or so. Just wanted to give a quick update and will add pictures later today.

Treatment & Preventative Meds / Re: Leptospirosis
« on: September 27, 2007, 06:03:12 pm »
we only do a yearly vaccine for it as well! I have to do bordetella since Adak is in training and goes to daycare, but even with the bordetella they can still get kennel cough, we did this year.

ask how many cases they have seen in their office! This was my option with Adak as the breeder strong suggest against it, but my vet had already treat 4 cases so Adak got it. Next year I will re-evaluate it before he gets it again. I think due to the vast growth of commercial properties it is becoming more common.
