Articles / Need BPO's Input on Article about Child Friendly Mastiffs
« on: January 24, 2008, 02:37:31 pm »
Hi Everyone,
I'm currently working on a post on a question I received about the most "kid friendly" mastiff breeds.  Of course, I have already included the basic information about these guys being "ginormious", needing to be supervised at all times, not knowing their own strength, movement of their own limbs, etc..etc..

I already have a good foundation, but would like to get the feedback of some of you here since I haven't owned all of these breeds (I wish!), and thus, I haven't personally seen all of them interact with children.

Introduce Yourself to the Forum / Re-Intro
« on: January 21, 2008, 06:31:54 pm »
Hi Everyone!

I just wanted to say a quick "hello" again, as I have been MIA for a while.  I was formerly known as "ThatDuckyBoy", but now have a new job as the full time editor-in-chief of a website called "The Dog Guide", so I figured a name change would be fitting!

As a refresher, I am owned by Reef, an American Pit Bull Terrier who is pushing 7 (and who is the prancy, pony princess), and Lucian; an 11 month old Dogue De Bordeaux pup who thinks he is a lap dog.

I spend my days writing about dogs (and editing others writing about dogs) and my nights doing hospice care for pets (Plus a few more dog related activities thrown in for good measure.  I have to keep myself busy!)

It's good to be back at BPO!

Hi all,
Recently I've noticed a trend in posts about "outdoor" dogs.  Having spent a great deal of time in the south, I came to see a lot of these kind of dogs coming into the clinic where I worked.  While there was the 1% that were well adjusted and well cared for, I would say 99% had some (if not most) of the issues described in the following link.  This is one of the best I have found yet.
http://www.paw-rescue.org/PAW/PETTIPS/DogTip_BackyardDogs.php

and another:
http://www.peoriahs.org/awfuloutdoors.html

Humane societies and shelters won't adopt out puppies and dogs to individuals who inform them that they are planning on keeping their pets outdoors. This alone should set off warning bells to an unacceptable and outdated behavior.  Please take the time to read the links and pass them onto whomever you think could use them.

Big Dogs with Jobs / Tracking?
« on: June 24, 2007, 03:32:29 am »
Hi All,
I am very interested in getting Lucian involved in tracking.  I know he's not the "normal" breed you see involved in this activity, but we don't really care.  I also have ZERO experience with this kind of training, but again- I don't really care!  We want to give it a shot! (We'd love to have a SAR Bordeaux!)  Does anyone have any helpful links, tips or contacts for us?  We're in Philadelphia, PA.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Helpful Groups & Dogs in Need / Young Female Neo in Need!
« on: June 23, 2007, 12:22:25 am »
Hi everyone,
In the *very* near future (we're talking days) I am probably going to be taking in a 1-2 year old blue female Neo to foster.  She has been severely neglected (I can give you more details via email).  She has no issues with other animals (there are cats and 2 other dogs in her current foster home - 1 of the other dogs is having an issue with her, which is why she may be coming here).  Her name is Sofia.  I am located in Philadelphia, PA - She is located currently in York, PA.  If ANYONE is interested please let me know, I can put you in touch with my friend who is her rescuer.  I'd rather have her go to her "forever" home than be bumped from place to place.

More soon...I promise!

Lucian has a weird new habit of climbing up on our very wide windowsills and sitting there- this should be especially amusing as he continues to grow.

We went for a nice walk around the neighborhood last night (I'm taking care of a diabetic cat for 2 weeks who lives about a mile away):

« on: May 30, 2007, 09:51:33 pm »
I know this isn't the mass photo update I promised, but I've been so busy these past weeks and haven't gotten around to uploading everything  :-\  Here are a few to tide you over, taken in the past few days (so you don't forget how the minimonster looks).  We have another vet trip tomorrow for vac's and a weigh-in!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Road Trip!
« on: May 16, 2007, 01:24:22 pm »
We're off (in 4.5 hours to be exact! Why am I awake?!) to Chicago!  On Friday Lucian has big plans to have a drink date with Gweck!  Though it'll be brief, I'm sure it'll be memorable!  (yes, camera's will be involved!).  Earlier in the day we'll be hitting dog beach and the minimonster will get his first taste of the water!  Wish us luck on the 12+ hour drive....lots of bathrooom breaks!

Julie- Gimmie a call tomorrow sometime- We're planning on coming into the city on Friday morning and spending the whole day doing stuff- the Alley (I need a new belt) 4 legs, Dog Beach, CORN CARTS!

This weekend one of my clients is coming to stay overnight!  Duncan is a 5mo pup who's owner calls him a "Saint x Golden mix" however, I really think he is a Newf mix!  I'll get photos and you guys can make the call!  He'll be arriving tomorrow afternoon.

Collars, crates, & other cool things / Cooling Beds/Mats
« on: April 30, 2007, 03:16:03 pm »
Hey everyone,
We're looking into purchasing a cooling bed/mat for Lucian in the next week or so.  There are a bunch i've seen for sale on the net and I'm not sure which are the best.  Does anyone have experience with these things?

Thanks!
