It's not just wheat gluten anymore....

Fears grow on pet food

New findings expand the threat beyond wheat gluten.

By Carrie Peyton Dahlberg - Bee Staff Writer

The monthlong pet food recall expanded Tuesday with a troubling twist, for the first time involving foods that do not contain wheat gluten but still tested positive for a potentially lethal chemical.

The finding makes it much tougher to tell people what to safely feed their pets and fuels suspicions that the chemical melamine is being deliberately added to some pet food ingredients to bolster apparent protein.

Natural Balance, a Pacoima-based company, is "99.9 percent sure" that a rice protein made in Asia is responsible for the melamine detected Tuesday in some of its venison-based pet foods, company President Joey Herrick said.

"It was pretty shocking," he said in a phone interview after the company recalled several of its venison foods. "I was livid."

Herrick declined to name the supplier of the rice protein or the country it came from, saying only that a large American company acquired the ingredient for Diamond Pet Foods, which makes some Natural Balance products.

Because both wheat gluten and rice protein enhance the protein content of pet food, "it certainly is suspicious" that melamine now is associated with both, said Bob Poppenga, a UC Davis veterinary toxicology professor.

Melamine isn't an edible protein, but it has plenty of nitrogen, which can be used as a marker for protein in chemical analyses.

So, if someone wanted to use less of the relatively pricey sources of vegetable protein, such as wheat gluten, and throw in cheaper starches instead, adding melamine to that mix would still make it look like a protein-rich product, numerous veterinary nutritionists and toxicologists have said. With such speculation swirling, the rice protein-melamine link further alarmed pet owners as it began appearing on Web sites Tuesday, said Gina Spadafori, a Sacramento-based author who runs a pet Web site.

"I see people who are being almost panicky," she said. "Last week, it was easy for veterinary associations to say if you want to feel better, just avoid wheat gluten," Spadafori said. "Now for this expansion to be an entirely different protein source ... I don't think right now anybody can say, 'Go feed this, it's safe.' "

Natural Balance President Herrick was so shaken by the melamine finding that he imposed a new policy Tuesday to hold all company foods in a warehouse until an offsite lab tests each batch for melamine. He won't ship anything until it has tested clean, he said.

Local veterinarians who've tracked kidney ailments nationwide have tentatively identified five more foods, not at this point under any recall, that they plan to have tested as soon as possible.

The Veterinary Information Network, used by about 16,000 of the estimated 35,000 U.S. veterinarians, noticed the five foods kept recurring in vet-described disease reports, said Paul Pion, the Davis vet who co-founded the service. Pion said it would be premature to name the foods.

He hopes to get suspect food samples to the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory at UC Davis to start testing as early as today. As the recall expands, "my sense is it's time for every manufacturer to go testing for melamine," Pion said.

The notion that melamine could be a deliberate additive -- not an industrial mistake -- arose as early as April 5, when Stephen Sundlof, head of the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine, said that the pet food recall could turn into a criminal investigation if investigators find that melamine was added deliberately.

Later, the New York Times reported that the Chinese company that supplied tainted wheat gluten to Menu Foods sought to buy large amounts of melamine through Internet trading sites.

More than 4,000 pet deaths have been reported on Spadafori's petconnetion.c om site. Others have estimated recall-related deaths at hundreds to thousands of pets nationwide.

All the 100 or so products recalled previously had involved wheat gluten, the vast majority of them dog food, cat food and treats manufactured for many labels by the Canada-based company Menu Foods.

Amid complaints that the multiple recalls were hard to follow, the FDA tried to assemble all the recalled foods on a single list, now over 5,000 items long, on its Web site at http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/petfoodrecall/

As of Tuesday evening, the Natural Balance recalls hadn't appeared there. Natural Balance recalled two products Monday and added more Tuesday after learning of the melamine test results. It has pulled back Venison and Brown Rice canned and bagged dog foods, Venison and Brown Rice dog treats and Venison and Green Pea dry cat food.

For pet owners, vets said, the important thing to be aware of is any behavior change that seems linked to either a new food, or even a new bag of the same food. Symptoms could include loss of appetite, vomiting, lethargy and excess drinking or urinating.

Hello everyone in BPO land!!! I just came home from the Raleigh Shows where we had a couple of dogs entered; a siberian husky, two chinese cresteds and my Afghan Bitch. Well, Holly the afghan needed 2 points to finish her championship, and there were enough bitches to get 2 points today so we had all our fingers crossed. Unfortunatly she has chosen this month to pattern out (She just turned two she is finally getting her full adult coat), and her coat is ...sparse... oh lets face it, she's naked! There were a lot of really nice girls in the ring today, and EVERYONE had more coat then her- Holly has REALLY great movement though and beautiful form and actually without coat its easier to see how well she's built so we had a good shot!!

Well, she got put up in Open Class, then took Winners bitch, then best of winners! She got her last 2 points, she finished and she is now our FOURTH champion- and only two more dogs with points needed to finish!  YAAAAAAAAAAAY! YES! WHOOOOOOOOOOOO OOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

;D  ;D Everyone please welcome home the TRIUMPHIANT NEW CHAMPION!  ;D  ;D

AM CHAMPION Pahlavi Hurray For Hollywood

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Anyone dealing with Dysplastic BPs?
« on: March 16, 2007, 05:28:33 pm »
My 18 month old golden, Whiskey, has bi-lateral hip displasia. He was diagnosed when he was about 5 months old, we noticed he snapped his hips to the right like a call girl every time he walked and had him checked. It came as a bit of a suprise because both of his parents were OFA'd good and excellent, but Whiskey was born with a rare birth defect (non-congenital or however that is spelled) on the base of his spine that took the form of a spur, and it created nothing but a protruding hook where his tail normally is. Because of this, he moves his hips a lot differently then most puppies, and within 6 months had deterorated them so bad he could not play for 5 minutes without collapsing.

It's possible he has to have his hips titanium reinforced within the next few months, but we are doing everything possible to avoid that at this time. Currently we are doing underwater therapy (we just got turned onto underwater treadmill therapy as well as his normal swimming routine) and massage therapy, and natural remedies, like MSM, Glucosamine, Shark Cartlidge etc to help him. He is also on a strict diet to get his weight down.. I'm such a bad dog mommy and before the diet I had let him get about 10 LBS overweight because I felt just so awfull for him not being able to move, and I let him have whatever he wanted... but thats 10 extra pounds right on those bad hips!

What about you guys? anyone else dealing with a BP with HD? What kinds of treatments are you doing? how do you get about on the bad days when they cant walk? (How are we supposed to help an 80 LBS dog, or a 150 LBS dog move around?!)

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Hello!! New here!! Sorta. Pics inside!
« on: March 15, 2007, 08:06:43 pm »
I'm shimmy-ing over to this end of BPO from Akitas where I originaly introduced myself because I am learning that I do not have an akita!!!

Sooo hello everyone!!! I am owned by two dogs at the moment (That live with me!) Whiskey, my 1 year old Golden Retriever, and my new baby Saki, a 10 week old Collie/Pyr mix. I rescued Saki from a walmart parking lot where she was running around with three of her siblings- unfortunatly one was hit by a car before I could catch him... the other two boys (Wally and Marty, how bad is that?) went to good homes, and I was left with Saki... and please, could you have resisted this face?

I'm having a blast with her- shes incredibly bright and she's housetrained herself in 1 week flat. She loves my Whiskey boy and follows him around endlessly chewing on his legs and face. Hes so good with her but he's spoiling her rotten, she can just come up and take whatever he is chewing on away from him and walk away and he doesnt even blink! Anyway heres some pics of little Saki (Originaly her name was spelled "Sake" like the drink, pronounced "Sock-ee" but you would be suprised how many people read it sake, as in, rymes with "fake" so I changed the spelling!)

I'm so adorable that I guarentee you didnt look at this picture and not say "AWWWWW" outloud!

MmMmmMm my first raw bone!

Me and my Buddy Whiskey hanging out in the sunshine!

Akita Discussions / New puppy... Akita maybe? What do you think?
« on: March 14, 2007, 11:16:08 am »
Two weeks ago, I rescued three puppies from under a car in the wal-mart parking lot. They were little dirty, greasy fuzzballs that were scared and hiding against a wheel- someone had dropped them in a cart with a hand lettered "free puppies" sign on it and they escaped and went running... one of the poor things was killed by a car and the remaining three hid under a truck. One was a red color with black mask, perked up ears and a very curled and tight tail- he also had blue eyes. The other was a very fuzzy white and black pinto looking boy, with blue eyes as well. Then there is my little girl here, Sake, all white with tri-colored patches, one on her eye, tri color ears, two big brown spots, and brown eyes. She is also very very fluffy. Her ears are not yet up but I think because the boys ears were up that her ears will go up too. They are also small and triangular like a perk-eared puppy. I am thinking she is siberian husky/Akita mix... what do you guys think?

Shes a very smart and wonderful little girl- she has already housetrained herself in just two weeks!
