Anyone heard this yet?

Here's the link to the bill proposition. http://www.animallawcoalition.com/breed-bans/pendingbill/523 According to this it is a bill proposing the outlawing of any breed "Traditionally refered to as a pitbull" within the state of ohio. Owners would have 90 days to "surrender their pitbulls" to the dog warden who would have 10 days to euthenize them. After 90 days, any one caught harboring, owning, keeping, etc etc a pittbull will have their dog seized and euthenized and be fined. They are wording the law to incorporate the word pit bull into the vicious dog laws, as in, owning a pit bull is equivelent to harboring a dog that has killed a child.

Quick question: Is this still america? I think I might have gotten lost.

Mixed Breed Pictures / Guess the breed?? Yea right, good luck!
« on: May 20, 2008, 03:47:45 am »
OK, so I found my new favorite thing to do. You know how they have come out with the genetic tests now to determine the exact mix of your dogs breeds? Its awesome! Well, if the test wasn't cool enough, you can go on their website and see the gallery of dogs that they have tested, and the mix results they got back. I spent about two or three hours last night going through some of them and trying to guess the breeds before I read the results. Thought I would give you guys a shot at some of the toughies :D :D

Here's how it works. Look at the name and the pic, guess the breed and write it down on a sheet of paper (or remember if you have a good memory but I put quite a few on here) then scroll down to the very bottom and start reading the results of the genetic screening. I always thought I was pretty good at picking dog breeds out of rescues... let me tell you, I got all of these wrong!!! so good luck!! :D

Thats him in my avatar...He might look familer- I have been mistakingly calling him a Golden Retriever for the last 2 and a half years.

Some jerk accosted me at petsmart this morning and wanted to know where I had gotten my blonde australian shepherd. When I told him Whiskey was a golden retriever, they guy argued with me, profusely, that he was too light to be a golden, and OF COURSE I was talking to a world famous australian shepherd breeder, and solid blondes were rare but he had one at home that was just about to pop with puppies. and obviously I had one, just look at the tail. The whole time he had this horrible looking backyard bred red aussie with blue eyes STRAINING on it's chain (yes, chain leash.) to get to Whiskey, and I mean scrabbling, barking, choking, coughing and spitting. The man was oblivous and didn't even look at his dog. So I calmly explained to the man that I was quite sure Whiskey was a golden retriever, that his tail was a birth defect, not docked, and that I honestly didn't think he looked anything like an australian shepherd, and I turned to walk away to get Whiskey away from the dog.

This is when Jerk number 1, turned to his buddy, jerk number 2, and said VERY loudly

"Can you believe this @#(*!@# idiot? She doesnt even know what kind of dog she has! Some people shouldn't be allowed to buy dogs."

So of course there was then a very fun argument where I introduced him to all of my thoughts about back yard breeders, rude rednecks who think they have a monopoly on canine knowledge, and horrible pet owners who have their dogs on CHAINS and can't control them worth a damn.

11:30 am and I can tell this is going to be a great day!

Thought I would pass this along to you BPOers- My group is hosting our anual (more like semi quarterly) Adoption Fair this coming weekend (SAT may 24th). We'll be bringing out as many as I have volunteers for, so between 20-25 dogs. They'll be doggy items for sale to raise money and baked goods and games, and we'll also have some of the special needs kids, like Roo and Cody, come out as well to help raise money.

This is at Reedy Creek Park, in Charlotte NC (2900 Rocky River Road, charlotte nc) and we will be setting up in front of the dog park, like last year. Anyone close by, come on and stop by! You get to meet all the critters I have been talking about this year LOL :) More info at the groups website, www.adoptcarol ina.com

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / I need some advice..
« on: May 11, 2008, 09:54:38 pm »
Ok.. I have two very, very sweet older dogs here. One of them is 10 years old, a golden retriever/shepherd mix, and the other is somewhere older then 5, but younger then 9. It's a big gap I know, but she is missing most of her teeth so its hard to guess. Her owners said she was five when they dumped her at animal control, but I would put her around 8 or 9. She is a golden retriever.

Both of them are in stage two of heartworm infection.

Kobe, the shepherd mix, has a barrel chest and a minor cough. Her joints are bothering her (Could be inflamation due to HWs, could be arthritis). The x-ray showed fairly signifigant heart problems. Her liver and kidneys are very minorly infected. She mostly lies around the house and gets up to go out or to eat, and limps the whole way. she has a lot of problems walking, but as she walks her tail does that "Whirly-bird" full circle wag and she grins the whole time. She is a very good snuggler and kisser and loves people and attention. She completely ignores the other animals and I really think she is perfectly happy. She does not come across as misserable. Right now, she is on pain medication for her joints, Heartguard to stop the breeding of the heartworms, and anti-inflamation drugs to help her breath and her blood flow.

Sunny, the golden retriever, does not have a barrel chest or a cough, but came up as high antigen, although less then Kobe's. She has other health issues, thyroid problems, cystic ovaries that she just had surgery for and had removed, as well as many other golf ball sized cysts along her reproductive tubing- everything had to be scraped and removed. She is still recovering from that surgery- essentially a bit more of an invasive spay. She has creaky joints and knees. She is also a very very sweet dog and very laid back, mostly just hands out by the bed. She has a little less tolerance for the other dogs as Kobe, and can get growly when the young guys are playing, and she doesn't like to go out to go to the bathroom, prefering to pee on the floor at the top of the stairs then walk down three steps. She does however, seem perfectly happy.

The reason I am writing this is because I need to decide within the next week how to treat these guys with their HWs. Normally, with high antigen cases, we would treat with arsenic and be done with it. But Kobe is so old my vet didn't give a great prognosis for survival. the inflamation from the dead heartworms could essntially stop her heart. On the other hand, the heartworms themselves will eventually kill her if left untreated. So Kobe has three options.
A) Treat with Arsenic and take the risks.
B) continue supportive care with heartguard, pain and anti-inflamatory drugs, and be kept quiet for quality of life
C)Euthenized

Sunny's story is essentially the same as Kobe's, except she isn't as old (probably) If I were to really take a shot at Sunny's age I would say 8. She is not AS possitive as Kobe, but still highly infected. The vet gave her a better, but still not the odds I like, prognosis of surviving the HW treatment. Her options are the same as Kobe's.

Honestly, I am leading towards supportive care for Kobe, and treatment for Sunny. I'd really like to hear if anyone else has an opinion on this. With limited space for long term foster care, limited funds for agressive treatment when survival isn't guarenteed, and many other dogs that need help... It's hard to make a decision :(

Groans, Gripes, Brags & Boasts / Burnt out.
« on: May 10, 2008, 09:28:36 pm »
I am burnt out. Totally. Done, I need a long, long break.

And it was these dang german schnepherds that did it to me!!!

Right now the rescue is overflowing with dogs with severe behavioral problems and/or health problems, or otherwise animals not ready for adoption. Kiki and her puppies, the pups still too young, Kiki still has too much milk to be spayed. We have five heavily HW positive dogs, two of which are seniors. We have Roo, the dog with flippers for front legs and demodex, who wont be going anywhere any time soon. We have Wolf, who has BBDS (Big Black Dog Syndrome) but is otherwise a great dog. We have ferrets and birds and two cats that no one has shown any interest in in months.

And we have the !@*(#&!@)*(&@ german schnepherds. One of my well meaning but slightly ignorant on designer dog breeds volunteers exclaimed "Oh! they are SO cute, this should be a new breed!" and I thought "Oh yes, lets combine the drive, determination and tendancy to be neurotic aspects of the german shepherd with the tenacious, yippy, hyperactive and suspicious mind of a schnauzer... that cant go wrong". Turns out I was right. These dogs are friggin NUTS.

I have had them less then a week and I want to butcher them all (Not really, but I cant help but dream.) Yes, I know its not their fault they are completely and utterly unsocialized and have no manners, they are puppy mill dogs. But they do that really annoying "Run right up to you dancing around you and licking your hands and waggling their tails then when you reach for them to pet them or touch them or catch them they BOLT for the hills." Which means it takes me about an hour to get them in and out of their crates. Oh, leashes would be really good- except that they rip right out of leashes, chew them, alligator roll/scream, or go dead limp the second I put them on.

Then when they are out, its this constant pack of moving yipping beasts. They all have the exact same pitch, just at different times so its like an unbelievably ear splitting tape playing over and over again. And they bark at EVERYTHING that MOVES or makes ANY TYPE OF SOUND. If you are sitting in a chair and cough they will all start barking at you.

Then, they are escape artists. First, they let half the rescue dogs out, because they opened the gates. yes, GATES. And one of them is smart enough to pop the dog-proof latch.

Then, one of them can open crate doors. Nana. She opens her crate from inside, then lets out the others. She can't get out of Vari-kennels, but if its wire crates she can figure those out easily.

This morning, they went a little more drastic, and dug out under the 6 foot privacy fence. I used to have siberians, which means I took precautions against diggers. Theres a foot of concrete under my fences. They dug under it. It took me hours to catch them all.

Oh, and did I mention they bite? sugar and spice when they come to you on their terms, but if you try to catch them they yip and bite and struggle in your arms. Sometimes. Sometimes they are very still and quiet.

This morning I got bit no less then 5 times and by the end of it I was ready to cook some schnepherds for breakfast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With all of these obviously non-adoptable dogs in, and no one showing interest in our adoptable dogs, and with our special needs dogs like Roo and the HW positive kids, we are up to abhout $6000 a month in vet bills and food. And we aren't making nearly any adoptions. I've made four adoptions this month, bringing in $150 an adoption. that doesn't even cover the schnepherds vet bills.

I am BURNT OUT people! My house is packed, there are dogs everywhere, no one wants to behave, I dont get any time with my own animals, Annie and Cisco are misbehaving like little CREATAINS (Annie is the queen of all counter surfers and can get into the tiniest spaces to get at food that I dont want her to have, like crawl through the 6inch high cat door to get to their food and litter box AND she chews EVERYTHING in site) and I dont have the time to train them so they spend way too much time in their crates. We get a couple hours of quality time but not nearly enough, and not enough repitition and scheduling to adequetly train them. My volunteers are all irritated with each other and bickering, my boyfriend has about had it, and I am exhausted and just want to get ONE night where I sleep a full eight hours.

If I dont go completely bankrupt, I think I am taking a break for the summer. I just can't do this any more at the rate I am going. I've already said I am not taking anything else in after May 24th, which is our last spay/neuter run and our adoption fair. I think starting June 1st, I am taking two months off to spend with my family and pets.

the only problem with that is at this moment there are 26 dogs in my house. If I dont make some adoptions soon, I am going to have to move out to save my sanity!!!!!!!!!!!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Roo Update
« on: May 09, 2008, 10:26:53 pm »
Hey guys-

Sorry its been so long- very hectic week! Someone dumped a HBC dog on my doorstep and didnt even ring the bell. Whiskey was wandering around the front door snuffling and whimpering so I opened it and here was a poor boxer/aussie mix laying in a pool of his own blood unconcious. Obviously hit by a car, but picked up as he was laying on a towel. Poor baby!!!! We took him straight to the vet but he had lost too much blood an we couldn't save him :(

Now on to Roo... who is doing very well. He is crazy hyper! he wants to play with everyone! he can run, jump, kangaroo kick and play with the best of him, but he looks like a little kid with giant shoes on when he runs! I tried to take a video but it really didnt come out too well.

Anyway, here are some new pics of the poor baby. Thanks everyone for the emails and links- I did check it out and the vet agrees that it could be a case of evere carpal subluxation syndrome, although situation due to malnutrition and probably not genetic. His is very bad though, as he is completely down on his carpal bones and only walks on his "wrists". He also can not flex or move his paws, they are basically dead- his whole bottom leg is like a giant flipper.

I have been told braces, surgery and pins probably wont help- we are to give him a very special diet and lots of vitamins and therapy and hope it bounces back some and he can "get back on his feet". Because of his age though (about 8-10 months old) she does not think he will really come back up... she said most people have luck when it is caught early, and she thinks the cartlidge build up around his carpal bones is too thick to really help the bones slip back into joint. *sigh*

There's a fund starting for Roo- I am putting it up on the website tonight. If anyone is interested in donating to help him they can through paypal at www.adoptcarol ina.com. If any of you wonderful BPOers think that you may want to adopt him..... well :) you know where I am!!!!!

Anything Non-Dog Related / Look who has feathers!
« on: May 06, 2008, 10:42:26 pm »
Apple and Cherry are getting soooooo big! I suck at telling color from down feathers so I have no idea what Cherry is going to look like, but I am anxious! He doesnt have a single pin feather yet. But he is a week younger then Apple so I am expecting them to come in any day now.

Be careful when viewing the pictures, try not to scream!

So Jax went to a different rescue (Yaay!) so I was able to take on Roo. Found on the side of the road by a friend of one of my volunteers, Roo is severely malnurished, deformed, has demodex, and is full of parasites. He can not walk, but hops like a kangaroo. Hence the name Roo. So far the vets think nothing can be done about his front legs.

He is very, very loving and sweet, and quite active with his disability.

This poor baby is at animal control in Greenville SC. if there is anyone in the NC/SC/VA/GA area that can take him on please let me know. Foster OR adopt. I have absolutely no kennel space for him but I am going to go and get him tomorrow as his time is OUT tomorrow morning.

He is BLIND from birth.

8 week old blind newfie mix, "JAX" gas date 05/06/08

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / We lost Spooky yesterday
« on: May 02, 2008, 11:21:55 pm »
Remember Spooky? The beautiful fawn/white spotted boy I posted trying to figure out what breed he was?

We had to euthenize the poor boy yesterday. We had taken him to the vet to get his full work up and be neutered and learned some very disturbing things about his health.

Number 1) Once we had him on the table and could get a better look at him, our vet thought him closer to 9 years old, not 4 or 5 like the person told us.

Number 2) We had named him spooky because he would shy away and generally was.. spooky. He spooked easily and loud noises and fast movements towards him scared him badly. We found out why- he's almost completely blind. She thought he could see some.. but not much, and not well.

Number 3) Remember how I mentioned his "alligator snapping"? Where he would clip his jaws together rapidily and hard, almost like he was snapping, or barking silently? The vet watched him do it and believed it to be neurological. That coupled with the way he held himself made her believe that he had something seriously wrong with his brain. she thought that also might be the reason he was going blind.

Number 4) He was HW positive.. and I don't mean mildly. I mean heavy, heavy, heavy. I mean, the vet gasped when she took his test. I was standing in front of her after she snapped it shut and was watching the dots appear, and she had taken a sip from her coffee cup and I saw her eyes get wide and she spit her coffee back into the cup. Apparently, the first circle that doesnt even show up on most positive dogs, the one that means "Seriously pack your bags infected" showed up before the control one did.

We had already knocked him out in preperation for his neuter, but in light of all his tests the vet asked me if instead of neutering him, I would like to go ahead and let him cross and not have to put him through all of the crap it would take to get him even remotely healthy. I sat there and stroked his head which I had never been able to do until he was drugged and it only took me a few minutes to decide. So for the second time in 10 days I euthenized one of the rescues here. I've done it three times in 10 years- the first one being 7 years ago, but now two in 10 days. It's horrendous. I held him and kissed him while he was euthenized and then we drove his body to the humane society to be cremated there- they have this AMAZING memorial garden where they sprinkle the ashes- its a huge koi pond and water fall with statues and memorial stones and lots of plants and flowers and poems. It has its own rainbow bridge that you carry the ashes over before you sprinkle them in the pond. Its very beautiful.

So goodbye Spooky- Run free and wild aross the bridge, healthy and happy now, and we'll all curse the people who couldn't be bothered with a $15 dollar pill every month to keep you from getting heartworms, and yearly vet appointments.
