The thread today about high vs. low protein diets fed to puppies and the impact on their ortho development has reminded me of a question that I've had since we lost Halley, our 3 y/o Pyr, to bone cancer last year.  Does anyone know if there is any known connection between osteosarcoma later in life and the amount of protein in the puppy's diet?   As you can imagine whenever we have a puppy again, I want avoid anything that could increase those odds.   :(

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Urinary Incontinence and Prion?
« on: April 05, 2007, 06:14:54 am »
Hi, a few weeks ago Daisy (our 8 y/0 Golden mix) started to urinate occasionally in her sleep. I took her to the vet to check for a UTI, but her urine & exam were fine so they assumed that it was spay incontinence.  They prescribed Prion to help her control this, but that same day the problem stopped, so I didn't start the meds.  :-\ Since then we've noticed that the only time she "leaks" is when she's been running and playing with Cassie, who is turbo charged. :) She can take regular walks, etc. but if she runs around (like the playing pic that I posted yesterday) then she will have a puddle under her when she wakes up from her next few naps. Now we're trying to limit her aerobic activity to walks & gentle play with Sammy (due to the "leaks" and arthritis in one elbow), but she wants to play w/Cassie so badly and occasionally sneaks out around the kids to play, then we notice the leaking.  We have laminate flooring w/area rugs, so the clean up is usually pretty easy, but we'd love to fix this, though I always worry about side effects with meds.  Have any of you noticed problems like this with your dogs?  Also, has anyone used Prion and did you notice any problems or side effects?  Oh, BTW she is otherwise healthy except for food sensitivities and arthritis so she eats Natural Balance Duck & Potato and I give her a glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM supplement daily.  Thanks!

Hi, I've been lurking here since last fall but I've been rather shy about posting (obviously). ::) It's great to find such a nice group of dedicated dog lovers!  I'm mom to 3 skin kids, 3 canine fur kids and our kitties.  We have Daisy, a very sweet spayed 8 y/o Golden Ret./Yellow Lab cross that we've had since puppyhood and we've had 2 Pyrs in the past. Our first Pyr we lost to old age and our second we had to PTS last year due to bone cancer and it just broke our hearts.  I found BPO while we were grieving and you've all been a great comfort to me and an inspiration to rescue our latest additions to our family.  We recently added two new Pyrs to our family. Since February we've adopted Cassie, a 23 month old spayed female GP that we adopted from an elderly couple that were having health problems and Sammy a 3-5 yr old neutered male GP that came to us from GP Rescue.  Cassie had been  well loved and cared for and she is a healthy, happy cuddle bug.  Sammy was removed from his former "home" by animal control due to severe abuse and neglect. :( He was only 68# and shaved due to mats when he came to rescue and you could count every rib on him.  We'll never really know how much he suffered, but he has the sweetest eyes and the biggest heart you can imagine.  He is doing well now, gaining weight and strength and we sure love him. Amazingly, they both originally came from the same town (5 hrs from us), so we know that they were meant to be!  We now have our Golden Pyr pack that we've always wanted and we couldn't be happier.  Thank you all for the inspiration to rescue!  ;D
