General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Peyton turned 1 today!
« on: February 24, 2008, 11:01:54 am »
Today was peyton's first birthday. She was spoiled all day. She got "special" treats and a new blankie for her kennel. She was wiggleing all around when she got it. She was very excited. I kept telling her Happy Birthday! and she would do a wiggle dance. I wanted people to come over and have a mini party for her, but we already had plans for a human birthday party tonight. Maybe next year though. :) Thank god we were able to keep her alive 8 and a half months already!  ;D

love all of those names.
My husband cant get off of Payton.  He loves it but that is becasue he is a fan of Payton Manning!!!! ;D

hehe. we are major fans of Peyton too! hense our puppy's name. I like it for a girl name, ONLY because it's not REALLY naming her after Peyton Manning. It's different because of the whole girl thing. I like the name Shana (pronounced Shawna). It is my name. It is Hawaiian vowels, but to through people off, there is no SH in the hawaiian language. :) I also really like Sterling Elizabeth.

Discussions & Information on Grooming / Re: dry hair and skin
« on: February 13, 2008, 05:41:32 am »
we had a cocker spaniel fox terrier mix with really bad dry skin and the vet told us to spray him with SKIN SO SOFT by AVON. he said it's gentle enough so that if he licks it, its okay. and when his skin got better (and his coat) we could stop it or use it as often as needed. the vet told us if it's his coat (which it was not) to spray on the coat but since it was the skin then to get under the coat and saturate the skin. and then rub it in. +everyone loves a rub down :)

peyton is very scared of alot of things. some noises make her pee when she doesn't want to. i talk her through it though. i make sure she is far enough away that she doesn't feel threatened but that i know she is still thinking about what is scaring her. for a while she was scared of cement trucks (we live in a sub-division where they are there all the time), we went on a walk and one was there. she freaked. started crying and trying to go backwards. i leaned down and pet her under tummy and told her "its okay, mommy won't let you get hurt". we stood there for about 2 mins. which felt like FOREVER when your baby is crying and trying to get away. i kept telling her that its okay and i told her what it was. "it's okay peyton, it's just a cement truck. i know it's scarey but its okay. it can't hurt you." she understands the tone in my words and soon we were able to walk past it (on the other side of the street) and about a week of doing that everyday when i saw them in the area, she can now walk past them or have them drive by and her not freak!

i also have taken her to the fire house near by and had them all (who were able to) pet her and play with her and had them put on some bunkers. i had her smell all around the trucks even.we were there when they got a call and she FREAKED when she heard the sirens. but they told her bye as they drove out and she wagged her tail. i think she understood that they were not scarey but the noise was. we have gone there a couple of times now and the sirens just spook her now.

so yeah, we make her face her fears, but calmly and slowly.

we tried the tabasco on poops outside and she couldn't wait to go lick it off. (i was told to that by my parents vet) i think it's a 'grow out of' thing. peyton did. it was also about the same time we changed food though. we went to adult instead of puppy. not sure if that helps or makes ya more confuzed.

Food Discussion & Information / Re: Kongs,What to stuff them with?
« on: February 01, 2008, 01:02:56 am »
just recently we have discovered that the little whole in the bottom of the "small" (we got it for her as a puppy and have upgraded yet) kong is the perfect size for a...meatball! and you can even stuff it in as it's still frozen! no need to sit around and let it freeze! hehe. she works on it for about a half hour...so if we wanna listen and actually watch a half hour tv show...we can! yey for kongs!

her first ever kong stuffin was yogart, bananas and pb. her next one was i believe fresh mangos, bananas and blueberry yogart (all mixed and blended then froze). she went NUTS for the mangos. i can't bring them home without her freaking out!  ;D we only stuff them once in a while only because we want it to be a treat. since she gets puppy size treats when she goes in her kennel, she gets treats all the time. so we stuff it when its a real treat!

but i like to look at the kong website too. they have a toco kong recipe. it's cute. :)

we have bought the sweet potatoe chips/strips and peyton loves them. at first she didn't like it but when she started chewing it and slobbering on it, she fell in love! she will whine if she knows they are there (we keep treats in a container, in a basket above her head on the kennel). but i have noticed that she loves anything that has to do with veggies and fruit. i don't know what it is about her...  :) i only get the sweet potatoes though when i have money to burn...they are sorta expensive. :(

FAQs about puppies / Re: Introducing a new puppy friend
« on: January 22, 2008, 04:46:25 pm »
we have a white shepard across the street and peyton and Loki (god of mischiff in german) love each other. peyton met him when she was about 6 months old and he is 7 years old. peyton was scared of him because he barks SO loud but he was tender when she would submit. he would get down and smell the places he needed to smell. they only get to play once a week but now they can't wait to get across the street! she still submits to him when he barks loud. i think it still kinda shocks her. but they talk to each other across the street all the time. i think that has a lot to do with it. they see each other but don't get to play together often. they can still smell across the street so they know each other, but have little contact. i don't know if this is correct, but with works for loki and peyt. so who knows.

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Re: Myth Or Truth
« on: January 22, 2008, 04:39:46 pm »
I followed these "rules" for about 2 months and then realized that my life and darrin's life shouldn't be ruled around these rules. If Peyton has played hard that day she gets food 12 hours since the last time she ate. (it's also nice having a poop schedule that way too!) and if we are gonna be late at our dinner, she can eat first. but we usually feed her a few mins before we start cleaning up our dinner plates (so after we eat) or if she is really bugging us during our dinner, she gets hers in her kennel. but if she is being "good" she gets her food in the kitchen under the bar like she normally does.

we tried to make it that we entered first but we (i do say we cuz it wasn't just her!) were having leash problems and when we switched to her slip clip collar (the choker but reg leash material) she started relaxing more and she now lollygags behind us when we enter the house. sometimes we do it just to reinforse that we are the leader and she sits automatically when we do that.

she does gets food scraps...when we are done. and not the good kind that dogs drule over! she gets carrots and green beans and potatoes and fruits. we don't drop stuff from when we are eating. i think that would tell her that it is okay to do that.

we do, however, have a problem with her thinking she can clean the plates though when we load them in the dishwasher. :) but we don't let her lick ones that actually have food on them. she licks the water off for us!

i think it really matters on the dogs and the owners. she is a totally spoiled brat, but i think she knows her place. ya know...darrin, peyton and then me! :) nah i think she knows that i make the rules too...she just doesn't follow them sometimes. :-[

Anything Non-Dog Related / question about peyton...
« on: January 16, 2008, 03:19:29 pm »
peyton has (for some time now) been digging the ground where we sit and play with her. we play with her and when she is done and tired, she will come up to me or darrin and dig hard at the ground (but VERY close to our uh crotch) and then lay down and stick her head under our butts. last night i noticed her doing it in her kennel with her blankie. she does the same thing but she sticks her nose under her blankie. my question is "WHY?" i heard of "chasing snakes" but digging??? just curious.

Alaskan Malamute Discussions / Re: hi how to help a dog with a bad belly
« on: January 15, 2008, 02:30:39 am »
I give him a large spoonful of canned pumpkin.  Just plain pumpkin, no spices.  That usually does the trick.
[/quote]

a side note... we (me and peyton) were cooking some pumpkin pies over thanksgiving and she got a hold of the can that the pumpkin comes in and she fell in love! i noticed that when i opened another can she got all excited and i even started scraping some and eating it myself! so, when i see that pumpkin is on sale next year...i think i might have to get me and peyton a little treat!
