Pit Bull Discussions & Pictures / Re: I need Help!!

i do know about Kalmanson but they say I have to muzzle my dog plus I have to pay upfront so i wanted to see if there is any other options. It looks like they will be my only option. State Farm and AllSate will not cover Pit Bulls so in your friends policies they are probably excluded. Thank you so much for your help! :)

Can't you just get a high end general liability policy?

This is one thing i am looking for. The problem is most companies will not insure Pit Bulls. If you know of one that might i would greatly appreciate knowing the name so I may contact them. Thanks.

Pit Bull Discussions & Pictures / I need Help!!

Any help or advice will be Graciosly accepted! I own a wonderful American Pit Bull Terrier. My husband, 2 kids and self just moved into a new home. After moving I found out I the landlord does not allow Pit Bulls. What I don't get is they will allow any breed but Pit Bulls. I know i could legally get out of my lease and possible sue since the lease did not state anything about breed restrictions in it and he never asked,  but I am trying to go a route outside of the courts. I spoke to him and he said if I can find an insurance or a loop hole that will cover him on the liability issue then I may keep my dog. So if anyone knows of any insurances or anytype of loop hole to help me keep my baby please, PLEASE let me know. This place has always provide great help when I have had a question so I am posting it. I live in Florida if it helps. ANY advice will be greatly appreciated!

This is truly heart wrenching. Some of the last good people who are willing to reach out and help these once nationally recognized, family pets and of course some ignorant morons have to ruin it. It just pushes me to truly want to open a American Pit Bull rescue one day. And so with that i continue on my life mission of education and realization of this wonderful breed.

Book Club & Noteworthy Reads / Re: HOW COULD YOU ?
« on: November 24, 2007, 09:04:43 am »

A man in Grand Rapids, Michigan incredibly took out a $7000 full page ad in the paper to present the following essay to the people of his community. HOW COULD YOU? By Jim Willis, 2001

When I was a puppy, I entertained you with my antics and made you laugh. You called me your child, and despite a number of chewed shoes and a couple of murdered throw pillows, I became your best friend. Whenever I was "bad," you'd shake your finger at me and ask "How could you?" -- but then you'd relent and roll me over for a belly rub.

My housebreaking took a little longer than expected, because you were terribly busy, but we worked on that together. I remember those nights of nuzzling you in bed and listening to your confidences and secret dreams, and I believed that life could not be any more perfect.

We went for long walks and runs in the park, car rides, stops for ice-cream (I only got the cone because "ice cream is bad for dogs" you said), and I took long naps in the sun waiting for you to come home at the end of the day. Gradually, you began spending more time at work and on your career, and more time searching for a human mate. I waited for you patiently, comforted you through heartbreaks and disappointment s, never chided you about bad decisions, and romped with glee at your homecomings, and when you fell in love.

She, now your wife, is not a "dog person" -- still I welcomed her into our home, tried to show her affection, and obeyed her. I was happy because you were happy. Then the human babies came along and I shared your excitement. I was fascinated by their pinkness, how they smelled, and I wanted to mother them, too. Only she and you worried that I might hurt them, and I spent most of my time banished to another room, or to a dog crate.

Oh, how I wanted to love them, but I became a "prisoner of love." As they began to grow, I became their friend. They clung to my fur and pulled themselves up on wobbly legs, poked fingers in my eyes, investigated my ears, and gave me kisses on my nose. I loved everything about them and their touch -- because your touch was now so infrequent -- and I would've defended them with my life if need be. I would sneak into their beds and listen to their worries and secret dreams, and together we waited for the sound of your car in the driveway.

There had been a time, when others asked you if you had a dog, that you produced a photo of me from your wallet and old them stories about me. These past few years, you just answered "yes" and changed the subject.

I had gone from being "your dog" to "just a dog," and you resented every expenditure on my behalf. Now, you have a new career opportunity in another city, and you and they will be moving to an apartment that does not allow pets. You've made the right decision for your "family," but there was a time when I was your only family. I was excited about the car ride until we arrived at the animal shelter. It smelled of dogs
and cats, of fear, of hopelessness. You filled out the paperwork and said "I know you will find a good home for her."

They shrugged and gave you a pained look. They understand the realities facing a middle-aged dog, even one with "papers." You had to pry your son's fingers loose from my collar as he screamed "No, Daddy! Please don't let them take my dog!"And I worried for him, and what lessons you had just taught him about
friendship and loyalty, about love and responsibility, and about respect for all life.

You gave me a good-bye pat on the head, avoided my eyes, and politely refused to take my collar and leash with you. You had a deadline to meet and now I have one, too. After you left, the two nice ladies said you probably knew about your upcoming move months ago and made no attempt to find me another good home. They shook their heads and asked "How could you?"

They are as attentive to us here in the shelter as their busy schedules allow. They feed us, of course, but I lost my appetite days ago. At first, whenever anyone passed my pen, I rushed to the front, hoping it was you that you had changed your mind -- that this was all a bad dream... or I hoped it would at least be someone who cared, anyone who might save me.

When I realized I could not compete with the frolicking for attention of happy puppies, oblivious to their own fate, I retreated to a far corner and waited. I heard her footsteps as she came for me at the end of the day, and I padded along the aisle after her to a separate room. A blissfully quiet room. She placed me on the table and rubbed my ears, and told me not to worry. My heart pounded in anticipation of what was to come, but there was also a sense of relief. The prisoner of love had run out of days.

As is my nature, I was more concerned about her. The burden which she bears weighs heavily on her, and I know that, the same way I knew your every mood. She gently placed a tourniquet around my foreleg as a tear ran down her cheek. I licked her hand in the same way I used to comfort you so many years ago. She expertly slid the hypodermic needle into my vein. As I felt the sting and the cool liquid coursing through my body, I lay down sleepily, looked into her kind eyes and murmured "How could you?"

Perhaps because she understood my dog speak, she said "I'm so sorry." She hugged me, and hurriedly explained it was her job to make sure I went to a better place, where I wouldn't be ignored or abused or abandoned, or have to fend for myself -- a place of love and light so very different from this earthly place. And with my last bit of energy, I tried to convey to her with a thump of my tail that my "How could you?" was not directed at her.It was directed at you, My Beloved Master, I was thinking of you. I will think of you and wait for you forever. May everyone in your life
continue to show you so much loyalty.

______________ ______________ ______________ ______________ ______________ ______________ ___

A Note from the Author: If "How Could You?" brought tears to your eyes as you read it, as it did to mine as I wrote it, it is because it is the composite story of the millions of formerly "owned" pets who die each year in American & Canadian animal shelters.
Anyone is welcome to distribute the essay for a noncommercial purpose, as long as it is properly attributed with the copyright notice.

Please use it to help educate, on your websites, in newsletters, on animal shelter and vet office bulletin boards. Tell the public that the decision to add a pet to the family is an important one for life, that animals deserve our love and sensible care, that finding another appropriate home for your animal is your responsibility and any local humane society or animal welfare league can offer you good advice, and that all life is precious.
Please do your part to stop the killing, and encourage all spay & neuter campaigns in order to prevent unwanted animals. -Jim Willis

I read this before on a website. I read it aloud to af friend and could barely finish as I choled up. This was actually written about a pitbull from the poem I read but its all the same for any breed. So sad!

This is by far the best presentation about pit bulls.

That was awesome. It would be only a miracle though that the media would ever help to portray this wonderful breed as the tru greatness that they are! Thanks so much for posting!!! ;D

Ive seen those sights and I know that there is about 20 breeds that resemble pit Bulls. It is sad because I have heard of other breeds being taken because they fall into a pit bull type catagory. Here your breed would fall into it. Its a sad reality we face today and i hope that we are able to keep up the good fight!! ;D

 >:( >:(This is horrible and unfortunatly it is the sad truth for pitbull owners and similar breed owners. The police probably just wanted to shoot the dog. Maybe he is afraid of pitbulls but that is no excuse!! >:(If it were me I would really try to sue!! This makes me so angry!! >:( >:(

Being an owner of an APBT I jknow how hard it is to find a place to accept Pitbulls. I wouldnt be so quick to judge by the name, because pit bulls can be wonderful dogs. Tell the owner you would have to meet the dog and see its personality. Pitbulls can be heavy chewers but with a bone or so they are fine. Though they can be dog aggressive if not properly socialized, so i would test the dog on that too. If it is sweet to you and good with dogs you are probably on the safe side. Unfortunatly these dogs have an undeserved rep. I hope this helps!! ;D

Well... Hello again
my DDB is 2 months already, and Gosh... he's getting big so fast!

The problem is that lately he get bored from his food. I give him puppies "Proplan", and I bought the 17kg package... he dosnt wasnt to eat lately, maybe the food has spoiled...?
because of my little experience I started to mix some home food for the "Aroma" of his regular food. in those cases he eats it all... but now he dosnt want to eat at all if its natural proplan... without any home food...

Please help... how can I deal with this situation...?
how can I reaccustom him to eat dog's food again...?

Thanks

I agree to that you should feed a higher quality. I feed innova but my Pitbull is also picky and she wont finish her dry food so i put some innova wet on top and then she eats it. this is expesive tho about 100.00 or so a month so you could try some other toppers like chicken or another food that is good for dogs  to save some money.hope this helps. :)

phillips has posted a url and i hae a list with alot on dogs on the hit list  and have come across another list that includes newfies an sts  boxers  pugs  fox terriers you need to sign that petition  or risk your dogs

I signed the fire list and no bsl. Luckily my state isn't on there or my home state. Is there anyway to see if my state is one that BSL is no longer allowed??? Keep up the good fight!!!

My 15-month old male malamute has provent to be an excellent hunter; he's been catching voles and field mice on our farm for nearly a year. Unfortunately, he's also recently taken a small fawn, and I worry about him turning this instinctive behavior on other dogs, etc.

On walks, he responds well to sit, stay, down, come--unless he sees a duck or a rabbit and then he nearly yanks my arm off and I struggle to control him when he's in that hunting mode. It's as if he's on a very fast autopilot.

We keep him kenneled at night (when he responds to the call) and when we're not home, but otherwise he has free reign of 40 acres and usually stays pretty close to home.

I know I can't change his genes, but I was wondering if any one had a similar experience and any success in moderating the behavior.

Thanks in advance.

Have you had obedience training? It wouldn't stop him from going after these smaller animals but may make him listen when he sees these other animals. Just a thought.  ;)

I don't know if it is true or not but here in Ontario we do have a pit bull ban, the dogs that already resided in Ontario are not part of the ban. (You wouldn't have to move) Unfortunately when the ban hit many people did not understand this and gave there dogs up to shelters.

Really the dogs were granfathered in? Well unfortunatly her in the US when I have heard of a dog ban they have rounded up the dogs and put them to sleep if the owner didn't get them out within days. Its very sad! Hey isn't your pup a "Pitbull Type"? Does the ban there only apply to true pitbulls?
