Bills & Other Legislative Acts / BSL
« on: July 21, 2007, 06:19:16 am »
I have heard that Florida passed a law that states no more cities or counties can ban specific breeds anymore. Supposedly they can only make laws stating against aggressive dogs. I know Dade county has a ban >:( and it was grandfathered in if this is true. Does anyone know if this is true or how i can find out? I have a pitbull and am just wondering if one day I might have to move because of a ban.  :'(Thanks in advance for your help.   ;D

Bernertomboi.... Thankyou for your Kind Post.. Congratulation s to you and your New companion Maddax.. Your Puppy is Very Beautiful... A woman in my area Breeds and shows Bernese Mountain Dogs... I often see her at My oldest daughter's Softball Games.... She is always bringing one of her Dogs with her... Puppies and adult Dogs...They are amazing looking Dogs, and they are so well behaved.... There is always another Woman there with a small Dachsun who always enjoys playing with the Dogs she brings with her, and they are always so gentle with this Tiny Dog... It is amazing to watch These huge Dogs be so gentle....She owns 29 of them.... I could only imagine what a Wonderful Sight it is to be at her house ;)... Enjoy your new Friend as i am Sure you have a Wonderful Life ahead of you with him, And i am sure you will have many wonderful Stories to share as well.... I look forward to hearing More about You and Maddax..... Also... Very good name... It seems like a very fitting name for him ;).... Best wishes to you!

Dober-gurl..... Are you a Pitbull owner?... My story is not meant to offend of Bash any dog... In my case it happens to be a Pitbull That tryed to attack my Son, and was Saved by my own Dog "Butterfly".... As i am Sure Most Pitbull owners would agree a Pitbull in the hands of the wrong person can be Threat to small children and other Dogs, But the same can go for any Dog.... Unfortunatly there are more Irresponsible Pitbull owners then there are Good Ones...Pitbull s are beautiful Puppies, and easy to fall in love with... They are very much over breed by irresponsible people.... In No way do i want to take away from people who are responsible with their Pitbulls... I know they are out there, and a Pitbull that is in good hands are truely amazing Dogs, But If they are in Bad hands then it can be a Big problem... Again.. That goes for any dog.... I know that a Saint in the Wrong Hands can be a Scarey Dog as well... And in the End i also know that how a Dog behaves is the responsibilty of the Owner.... My Brother raises Pitbulls, and he is very good with them.... They are very Beautiful Dogs, and very well behaved, But he is the first person to tell his own Children That all Pitbulls are not like his, and to be very aware of that.... And again, That is with all Dogs, But Pitbulls are very Strong as we all know, So we may not have another Chance if we come across one in the hands of a irresponsible owner, and unfortunatly they are the Majority, ..... I hope I do not offend anyone who is a Pitbull owner, That is not my purpose, But in my situation that is the Dog I feel the need to protect my Children against right now, Being that I had one charge my Yard to get my Son.... Had it been a little Jack russel then that would be my Dog of Choice to talk about, But it would not be insinuating that all Dogs are the Same, and i am sure i still would be getting a fence up, being that i have small children, and I don't want to see them get Bit or attacked at the Hands of a Irresponsible Dog owner...Talkin g about a Certain Breed can be a touchy subject, and there are always going to be people who are offended thinking that it is about the whole breed...But that is not always the case, But in my case It happens to be about a Pitbull.

Cheers,
Shell

I am soo happy to hear that you do not feel all pitbulls are bad. :D so often i run across uneducated mean people when with my little girl. :'(  >:(And we don't even have a big problem with pitbulls here. Anyway. I hope the irresponsible owner is called on and taken care of because its people like this that cause us pitbull owners such heartache :'(Well good luck and have a great day! ;D

Hello Everyone,

My name is Shell, I am the proud Partner of a Beautiful Female Saint Bernard named " Butterfly".
We named her that because she has a pattern on her back in the shape of a large Butterfly.... The name also became very fitting of her once she grew up...She is almost 4 years old.

I am new here to this Forum.... Actually owning a computer is new to me as well, so i am not so sure of the etiquet in joining into a Forum... I hope you do not mind me starting off my first Post the way i am.

I was very excited to see there was a place where people spoke about loving their dogs, and people who have Saint Bernards...I do not know any one who has had a Saint before, There is so much about her i would Love to share with someone who may appreciate it.

Although Butterfly is very Special, and people are always drawn to the way she carries herself. She is very Graceful, Yet very strong at the same time.

Besides having Butterfly, I am also a Mother of 3 children.. 12,3,2... Butterfly is like having 2 Mama's in the house. She is always keeping a close eye on the Children.

A few months ago my 2 year old Daughter had a Seizure.... Butterfly Must have known it was gooing to happen, Because she stood in front of her with her tail pointing Staight out, And letting out a Bark i have never heard before, At that point my daughter started to Sieze..... When my Baby girl came home from the Hospital Butterfly layed beside her for 2 weeks Untill she knew that she was Ok.

My Baby Girl Jojo will sit infront of Butterfly and sing Twinkle Twinkle little star to her.... They have a very sweet Bond... Her Bonds with my Children seem to Mimic the same way i am Bonded with them.... Each Child is different, and they are all treated a little bit different in their own kind of way....It is very Sweet to watch... It is one of those things that can make a Woman feel very proud of her life.

A few weeks ago a Pitbull ran into our yard when my Children, Butterfly and myself were outside... The Pitbull Charged after My Son who is 3 years old, It looked as if the PitBull was chasing Prey.Butterfly Charged after this Dog right before he grabbed my Son.... She fought with him in the yard... It was a Very vicious fight... My oldest Daughter grabbed the little children and ran in the house....Butte rfly hurt the Dog, and sent it yelping out of our Yard. She chased him to make sure he was leaving this Yard. She patrolled the Yard for a few minutes to make sure it was safe, Then she came up the porch steps without a scatch on her... She came in the house as if she was comforting the Children. It took me a little bit to register what had happened... I was so shakin that this dog could have attacked my Son, and Worried that My Dog had just got in a fight with a Pitbull.... But when I calmed down i was amazed by the Loyalty of Butterfly.... She had saved my Son, She protected my Family.

To see the Kind of Power she had, When she is such a Loving Dog... Her instinct is that of a Mother, Without even being a Mother herself..... She is truely an amazing Dog... She is My Partner, and i am very Grateful to know her... I admire her.......

Thankyou to whom ever has read this... I felt by writing this about Butterfly was a good way for me to Honor her... She may not be aware of how i feel about her, But then again i think she is ;)... I justed wanted to be able to share my Story of my Very Special Saint Butterfly... I look forward to sharing more of them in the Future.

Kind, regards to you all
Shell

That is a great story!!! Kudos Butterfly. Thank you for sharing your story and i am very happy for that all turned out all right!!! ;D

Food Discussion & Information / Re: puppy food???
« on: July 16, 2007, 11:52:30 am »
We've been jumping around from brand to brand for our 2. But our vet and a dog food specialist definitely said that it was essential to be feeding large breed puppy food to large or giant breed dogs. Your golden retriever definitely needs a large breed puppy food. Now as far as brand goes, we have tried Diamond, Iams, Purina ONE, Purina Puppy Chow, Authority, Eukanuba, Ol' Roy, and Science Diet to name a few for our girls. What I've found to be the best nutrition-wise but have not tried are Eagle Pack, Pro Plan, and Nutro. They contain a good amount of protein (28%), glucosamine, and selenium in them, which is important for keeping large breed dogs' joints healthy. It can prevent hip dysplasia. But these brands are somewhat pricey. Our price range lets us buy Eukanuba and Purina ONE, which also have excellent protein levels and contain selenium and glucosamine. Eukanuba helps our Saint also avoid mushy stools. Authority Large breed Puppy is a really affordable brand with glucosamine in it. I recommend it, but our 2 didn't care for the taste. Maybe your pup will like it. Any dog food, no matter what age dog, should have at least a 22% or 23% protein level and for large dogs, contain glucosamine or selenium. It will pay off in the future to feed your dog a good puppy food now!

Please don't be offended at what I am going to say here, but most of the foods you mentioned are VERY low quality.  Second, most vets have had minimal training in dog nutrition, and I've found that their recommendation s for large and giant breeds are often incorrect.

High energy LARGE breed dogs should be fed a slightly higher protein and calorie level food than GIANT breeds.  As a previous poster mentioned, if the parents were 90 lbs+ you definitely want to stick with a 24% or lower protein food.  For the smaller 60-70 lb range, a large breed puppy food would be fine, but I wouldn't go over 28% protein.

There are foods in the same price range as Eukaneuba that are much better nutritionally.  One of my favorites is Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul.

Ericka i have been thinking of switching from innova large breed puppy to either merrick or wellness. The thing im concerned about is i don't see a large breed formula for these. Do you have any suggestions about these or solid gold  or anything else. I have been trying to research as much as i can but everyone says something else. i have a 6 month old pitbull who will be about 75 to 80 lbs probably. Thanks in advance!!!

Way overdue, but thanks for the advice.  We did find a cute little girl, Daisy.  We think she's a weimaraner/pittbull mix.

We really love her.  Unfortunately we are now looking for a new home for her.  About 2 weeks after we had her she attacked Casper.  She has since attacked him 5 times.  They are pretty ugle fights, and I am afraid one day I won't be able to break them up.  Her triggers are food - not dog food just people food, and when she's on lease.

We found that if she't not on a lease (and no food around) she is great with other dogs.  Loves them.  If she's on a leash we just never know if she'll be nice or turn into Kujo.  Anytime I have food, the dogs have to be outside.  The problem is, I can't constantly worry each time I come in with groceries, or go to the kitchen for a snack.

She is great with people! (half the time she's great with dogs) and really good with little kids.  She's a lover, always licking, and wagging her tail.  She loves playing ball.  She sits, stay, comes anytime you call her, always anxious to please.  We think she needs a single dog home.

Anyway, if anyone has any advice to solve her issues, or find a good home, let me know.  I refuse to take her to a shelter, so she's with us until we figure it out.

I am sorry about your problems. I want you to know that what the other person said is not entirely true. Not all pit owners have to seperate and rotate. My dog was raised with another dog and is noway food aggressive. Its all in how you raise them. Though alot of people crate their pits while theyre gone simply because when pits fight most of the time they wont stop. The most important thing is i would try to get a puppy for reasons like daisy. Especially if you get another pit. you never know what happened to them before. good luck!!! :D

lmao np.  true, BUT, i've found it really upsets tummys easily.  you can add omega 3 to their food (salmon oil is the BEST, but canola oil or "fish oil" also helps it).  you can buy it at drug stores and maybe wal mart, for fairly cheap.  i got a 240 (i think) count for $10.
Thanks so much for your help!  :D

I got home from work today after a stressful day, and wouldn't you know it, more stress was waiting for me just over my backyard fence.
There's a 6mo. male pit bull puppy in the neighbor's back yard.  It belongs to the (ex?)boyfriend.
I heard this pup crying at her back door this past weekend and found that he had NO food for I don't know how long (several days since the BF was kicked out), and NO water available. No one was home. So, I took him a big scoop of food and found a bucket for water.  He was so happy to eat!  That was 4 days ago, and today the water bucket was filled with yard clean up, the food bowl was overturned, and I realized the last time he ate was when I fed him.  I am SOOOOO angry it makes me sick to my stomach!  He's sweet tempered and craves attention, but the last pit that lived over there killed my daughter's cat. My neighbor's not at all interested in the dogs in her yard.   I am not anti-pitbull.  I AM anti-stupid-macho-male-pitbull-owner who thinks it's cool to put the biggest chain possible around their dog's neck and parade around town with it, and let it get into fights with other dogs just to prove his 'manhood'. Then when the dog's not being 'shown', it's neglected or worse, to make it mean.  There's a lot of that going on in our area.  It's a gang status thing.
I called animal control.  I really despise irresponsible dog owners.  Thanks for letting me rant.

I am so glad you fed him and called animal control. You probably saved his life. This is the reason people hate the breed because of the irresposible owners.  :'(

On the evening of February 8th, I was shopping at the Huntington Beach Walmart with my Service Dog (Chloe) and daughter for approx 1/2 hour. Chloe was extremely well behaved.  The Customer Service Manager approached us and asked us to leave because “there are children in the store and we can't have a vicious breed in here.” I was stunned and went over Chloe's training, that she was an Ambassador for her breed, and emphasized what she was asking me to do was illegal according to 1990 American Disability Act 1990.  The Walmart Customer Service Manager said that she represented the Store Manager's position as well, and she still did not feel comfortable with the dog in the store and asked us to leave. I again emphasized what she was asking was illegal and to carefully consider what she was asking me.  She again asked if we could go, and then when I pressed her for it in writing, she said to finish my shopping quickly and not to linger.  I told her I wanted to talk to the Store Manager and followed her upfront.  After checking out, I asked her when he was coming - she said he look for us and is now busy. She confirmed it was his decision also and they just got off the phone. I said I would wait and to call him again, she said it would be a while and to go because “it won't matter.”

I left and called our OC HUGS Service Dog president. and then called the Store Manager with her conferenced in.  I first confirmed his position that he wanted us to go because of our Service Dog's breed and he said and elaborated his prejudice opinions, stating they were an 'unstable and vicious' breed and banned from different cities. He said he was aware of the Service Dogs and their rights, but he had never seen a Pitbull Service Dog in his 20 years.  He also emphasized that it was our responsibility to educate the public and we shared that is what are trying to do starting with him.  He was closed minded in his opinions, rude and insensitive, and finally apologized when pressed for one.  The incident is still on record and should have never happened.

We went back to the store two days later as we informed them that we would and approx 6 to 8 employees approached us stating that there was a big meeting and they couldn't believe it was blown out of portion.  One employee even asked "did you break her of her craziness?" and then went on to say how he heard how the breed had a 'crazy' gene that made them go crazy and hurt people --- UGH!!!  I was as polite as possible and informed him about the temperment test and the difference between human aggression and dog aggression, along with socialization and training, etc...

There is a petition you can sign.  I am officially boycotting WalMart.

(link fixed)

This is sad and disgraceful!! :'(
I would love to sign this petition as I am a Pitbull owner and lover and also try to do as much educating as possible. Yet I can't find the link. Please email me with it if possible. Thank you!!  :D

Yes Chief is a true example of a pitbull. I wish the media would think about these great dogs future instead of themselves and put these stories in the news!!  :'(

i didn't look at the date on the article, so i don't know how old it is.  the breed restrictions that are going on lately (at pet parks, doggy daycares, etc) are getting out of hand lately though, IMO, it should be done on a dog by dog basis.

AMEN!!!
