Newfoundland Pictures / Oldest Newfie
« on: May 08, 2005, 04:15:55 am »
I am curious to know what is the longest anyone has had a Newfie for?  I know they don't have a long lifespan.

My friend that has a newf also had a landseer but she died last year at the age of 8.  It was very very sad.  The friend that I speak of is our neighbor at my work place, I am a horse trainer so therefore I work on a horse farm.  The landseer( Candy) wandered over one day and she got into the pasture and everytime she tried to get out she kept getting zapped by the electric wire, she had to be put down the next day, it was horrible.

Here is a word of advice for anyone who has an older big dog around any electric fence, please be careful, poor Candies heart just couldn't handle it and her belly bloated terribly a lot.  I went over to say good-bye to her the morning that the vet was coming out to put her down and let me tell you that was soooo hard to do, she was a wonderful dog.

It is a sad story but I hope that by telling it it could be prevented from happening to another wonderful Big dog.

OMG, I want one, I want one , I want one.  You are gonna have to stop posting pics...lol, they are so adorable.  I am starting to panic though, I don't think there will be enough time in the rest of my life to have all the giant breeds that I want, and I am only 25........lol.

Oh the joys of owning a drooler.  Fortunately Dobes to not drool but I do plan to own droolers in the future so I will have to prep myself.  My friend has a Newf and she has even had to wipe drool off the CEILING...lol

I believe that as long as your pooch is not overly aggressive that there is no need to be concerned about having more than one dog.  Most cases that you hear about dogs in packs attacking people are usually very very aggressive and they have ignorant owners.  Just think of how many people have multiple dog households.  I wouldn't worry about it.  We are all responsible owners in here and we train our dogs and socialize them very well so there is no reason to believe that you couldn't have all the dogs you want.  It is a shame that other peoples ignorance and stupidity would make us feel this way about wanting to have more than one of the most lovable creatures around.  That's my opinion.  Looking forward to hearing everyone elses take on this issue. :)

My Dobe Ace is fascinated with thunder and lightning and I only just adopted Sasha 6 weeks ago and we haven't had a thunder storm yet so I will have to wait and see how she is.

My fiance and I got a Doberman because he grew up with them and he loves them dearly.  Frankly I was a bit scared at first to own one but now after having 2 I wouldn't change it for the world, fantastic dogs.  I love big dogs in general because there is so much of them to love and cuddle with, I would rather have a cat then a small dog.  In the future I would like to own a Saint, Great Pyrenes, Great Dane, Newfie, Mastiff and the list goes on and on, I am sure you catch my drift :D

How old is your dog?  The only solution may be to crate your dog.  I tried the bitter apple thing with my dog and as luck would have he actually liked the stuff, go figure.  Try not to think about crating as something mean( why don't you like crates?), dogs actually like being crated, it is their den.  You could always work on the seperation anxiety by just leaving the house for a minute or so and then returning and gradually make the time that you are away even longer, it is a great way to treat seperation anxiety by showing the dog that you will indeed return.  It is WAY to exhausting to have to worry about what is being destroyed while you are away, been there done that, not fun.  I don't think you should have to part with your pooch over this matter.  Hope that helps, good luck.

Seeing as your current pooch is 10 months old there shouldn't be any problem bringing a new puppy into the home, it gets a little trickier if they are older.  Good luck :)

My guess would be that Ranger is just trying to play with Tigger, does Ranger know the "leave it" command?  It works great with my Dobes.  When my dogs start to bother my cat I give them the " leave it" command and they will leave him alone.  When I got my first Dobe my cat was 10yrs.old and he tried to play with the cat constantly, I have learned that a cat is no match for a 90lb Dobe...lol.  Cats are very good at defending themselves as long as your pooch isn't really trying to harm your kitty.  I think he will grow out of it.  Does your pooch have another pooch to play with?  He may be just wanting a play buddy.  Now my kitty is 16 yrs.old and healthy as ever.

If it is human grade meats than it should be fine.  Is that the first ingredient on the bag( human grade meats"?

Do you take your puppy's water away in the evening?  Just pick a time like maybe an hour before his last pee before bedtime and take his water away until morning.  Might help keep you and your home dry...lol

It is a very heart breaking article isn't it?  But it is the truth.  The first ingredient in the list is the main ingredient in the food.

Glad to hear that your pooch can swim, what an ordeal that would have been if he couldn't.  My Dobe LOVES to swim.
