General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Re: In the line of fire!
« on: September 12, 2008, 03:53:19 am »
LOL  Sorry, hopefully when Jasmin gets big enough she'll stop walking under him.  Maple used to do that to Woody as a puppy, and now as a full grown dog too big to walk under him, she still sticks her head in the way.  You'd think they'd learn.

Haven't had one poop in the Vets office yet, but, Maple always pees all over when the Vet examines her.  She's fine with the Tech's touching her, but, no matter which of the 3 Vets in the office start to examine her, she pees.  This last time they had me hold her at a "stand" so the Vet could see something at her back end, and when the Vet touched her, she peed, straight back at about knee height~!   :-[  I'd never seen projectile pee before, but, you can bet the Vet won't do that again.

Boxer Discussions & Pictures / Re: More pics of Molly

:D  Molly is adorable~!  Boxers keep their puppy energy for a very long time.  My Boxer/GSD mix, Maple, has finally gotten down to an almost normal amount of energy.  She turned 7 this year :-)

I feel so bad when I hit the quick.

Woody hates having his nails clipped and screams when I do it.  Plus, his nails are all very thick and black.

I've been thinking of getting the Peticure or a dremel of my own (can never find hubby's tools when I need them).  Both of my dogs are noise sensitive, so, I've been nervous about trying them.  I think I need to do it soon though, because neither the groomer or vets seem to clip Woody's nails short enough.

Newfoundland Discussions / Re: Anybody have trouble in dog parks?
« on: August 22, 2008, 09:29:10 am »
I don't go to dog parks because Maple doesn't deal well with other dogs she doesn't know, especially ones that won't leave her alone.  Woody couldn't care less, and would only run the fence line chasing birds flying by.

I agree that if you can not control your dog, you should not have it at a dog park, especially if it is agressive at all.

I do walk my dogs daily through several parks in my town, and am amazed at all the idiots who let their dogs off leash and as the dog is running over to me just say, "It's OK, he's friendly".  Um, my dog is not (well, she is, but, she feels the need to protect me and Woody from all dogs), and, when she's on a leash we shouldn't have to deal with loose dogs (there is a leash law here & we have multiple dog parks nearby).  I pay attention to what's going on around me and either change direction to avoid other dogs or use the leave it command when another dog approaches and it works well.

I have animal control on my speed dial now because there is one dog in particular that charges us barking and growling and the man just doesn't get it that this is unacceptable (Ugh, and I never know which park he'll be at in order to avoid it).

I do my best to be a responsible dog owner, and to protect my dog too.

I think dog parks are great for those of you who have well socialized dogs and wish I had done a better job with Maple.

Sorry, kinda got bloggy.

Mixed Breed Discussion / Re: Wolf Hybrids...Any Thoughts?
« on: August 13, 2008, 03:50:03 pm »
:)  He is gorgeous!  As everyone else said, be very sure if you take him in.  My first dog was a Husky/Wolf/GSD who I got from a friend at 6 weeks old.  The first 2 years of his life were very interesting to say the least.  His actions were more wolflike than doglike, and I had to be on my toes constantly.  He did learn not to hurt my cats or birds, but, any small animals who were not mine, were in trouble.  He could also jump ANY fence though learned not to go over a fence that I didn't "show him how to".  If I went over the fence, he would too.

As he aged, he became more and more protective of his pack, and I never had to worry about walking alone at night. Had a brother in law who came home drunk one night and decided to jump the fence since he couldn't find his key, and Jasper went after him (dumb person).  We laugh now, but, what the heck was he thinking?  He knew the dog protected the house.  After I had my boys, he became even more protective.  Noone could approach them while we were on a walk, or Jasper would growl and go on the alert.

He lasted just under 13 years, and I will always miss him.

Hmm....You're not out here in No. Cal off J59 now are you?  Driving to Merced from Sonora a couple weeks ago, I passed a pasture that had 2 camels in it.  Of course, that ranch also has a zebra (or at least used to) and a bunch of exotic cattle too.

My sister did this with her rescue (we think she's a Finnish Spitz).  Her results came back on Wednesday.  All her major breeds were unidentifiable, and the only minor breed that showed up was Border Collie.  They did send her a notice and discount to re-do it once they get more breeds in their database.

I've thought about running Woody and Maple through it, but, with Maple, I'd rather be ignorant than have her info come back with PB in it.  No, I'm not against PB's, I know several VERY loving ones, but, my Home Owners Insurance would drop us~!  And, for those of you in states where PB's and other breeds are banned, would it/could it be used against you?

If its just a tool, I think its great, 'cause I've always had MUTTS :-)

"And as an added incentive, maybe the spring loaded gate could be tight enough to smack him on the @%% as he goes out! LOL Sorry
Stella"

Hmm.......migh t work LOL

"So now the gate is locked and i have a camera on the side of the house."

I'll have to have the camera on the internet so I can see it from work.  Oh, and unfortunately, DH knows how to work locks LOL  I used to hook caribiners through the latch, but DH just takes them off and leaves them.

"My dad suggested strapping pictures of naked women to the dogs, so they would pay more attention to where they are....lololol ....."

Love it~!  But, what if the DH doesn't notice, what will the middle schoolers think when the dogs approach them LMAO~!

"I just have to ask, why is it that if we want anything done, we have to do it ourselves?! It used to drive me crazy when women would say stuff like that, and now that I'm married, I realize why.

My husband is just ridiculous about that sort of thing. And the other thing that gets me, is how come if we remind them or say ANYTHING we're nagging biznatches? WHAT IS UP WITH THAT?!

UGH. I'm not very happy with the men folk right now. Sorry."

I don't know~!  But, I feel the exact same way~!

So, my neighbor came over last night to let us know he was the one who put them back in the yard.  He said he took them to the side yard, but neither would go in. LOL  Then, both dogs went to the other gate and sat there waiting for him to let them in the regular part of the yard LOL
