Just a thought, what about a battery operated alarm that you stick on your gate?

Great idea~!  I'll have to see if I can find one.  Knowing him though, after listening to it for a minute, he'll just disable it (so, how to make it man proof?) I'm also thinking of putting a spring on the gate to make it close after him.

Maybe I'll look back and laugh---in about 100 years~!  If it was anything that didn't endanger my pets or my kids, I would be OK with it, but, he is so careless about this sort of thing and does it over and over again  ???

I can only hope he learned the lesson this time.  It seems that this happens about once a month (somewhere around the time I get comfortable again after checking all gates every time I leave).  He's really sorry every time it happens, just not sorry enough to stop doing it.

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Re: High prey drive question
« on: October 02, 2007, 04:53:41 pm »
Eww~!  Woody also has a very high prey drive.  I think that's the gene what he got from the 3 breeds of hunting dog he is (he sure didn't get the retrieve gene).  If it moves Woody will hunt it, but, he usually doesn't bother with buzzy bugs (that's Maple's job, she hunts flies and bees only).  I'm lucky that he doesn't eat the squirrels or 'possums that he catches, but, I've never been able to stop him from hunting them.  Heck, he even will track planes or helicopters across the sky.  Oh,and when we go to my friends house, her pond with goldfish in it is the dog sitter.  He points and will not move away from it except to eat (even at night, he begs to go out, so I'm thinking he needs to pee, and all he wants is to hunt fishies)

Good luck, and, I guess Strider will need breath mints before giving kisses from now on  ;D

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Need to VENT~!

First let me preface with 2 things:
1) My DH is a General Contractor who stores his equipment/materials at our house in the side yard.
2) My dogs stay in the same side yard during the day when I'm at work (they have a nice shelter with their beds in it).

So, DH calls me on my cell a while ago, and says, "I guess I left the side gate open this morning.  I got home and the dogs are gone."  At that point I'm freaking out and tell him I'm coming home to look for them. We live near a middle school, and the parents drive like idiots in the mornings, so I'm afraid one got hit.  And, the highway is only a few blocks away~!  Then he tells me to wait, that he hasn't looked in the other part of the yard, maybe one of my neighbors saw them and put them in through that gate.  I'm halfway out the door at work by then.  Luckily when he looked there, both Woody and Maple were loose in that part of the yard (probably harrassing my tortoises).

I was so relieved~!  But, at the same time, am ready to strangle DH~!  Why can he not learn to close gates~!  Or for that matter doors (he leaves our front door and screen wide open).

Thanks for letting me vent  ;D  If I even talked to him right now, I'd be YELLING~!

I hope all goes well with the behavioralist~!  Maddox looks absolutely adorable.  Maybe you should also have a vet check him (like Patrick said).

Best of luck~!

And what a cute cuddly polar bear she is too  ;D

I used to have people freak out when I was walking my old dog Jasper.  They always thought he was a wolf.  It made great protection when I went for late night walks.  But, of course, they weren't too far off base, he was 1/8th wolf, and my sister's dog Magnum was 1/4 wolf (he was Jasper's uncle).

Ugh~!  That type of people give our business a BAD name~! I have been in the Security business for almost 25 years now, and had to put up with a lot of the same crap many years ago.  Now, that I am the Site Manager, NO ONE in my group will dare to treat anyone else that way.

I think I read in your post that you are union.  If so, file a formal complaint with your union.  Discrimination due to sex is ILLEGAL in this country.  You can also go to your states EED to file complaints.  From what I see, you are both being discriminated against due to your sex, and you are in a hostile work environment.  I agree with Holly, but, would reword the "get even" statement.  You are not getting even, you are requesting to be treated appropriately, which is a basic right.  (Yeah, Holly, I know, its just semantics).

Oh, and do not QUIT until you have filed your complaints.  Once you file, they need to worry about how they treat you, as almost any negative treatment will be seen by the courts as retaliation.

Good luck~!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Woody Update

Woody's feeling better~!  I don't know if it's the pain pills the Vet's have me giving him, or if it's the extra wet food he's getting (just kidding).  Anyway, he still has problems getting to a sitting or staning position from laying down, and vice a versa, but, it's much better than a week ago.  The Vet's called me Saturday afternoon with the latest test results, and, they found NOTHING~!  Argh~!  $600 worth of tests to tell me they have no idea what is wrong.  They say if he gets worse again after the pain pills are gone they'll run more tests, otherwise, just keep an eye on him.  I sure hope it doesn't come back~!

They’ve ruled out a lot of things, but, don’t know what’s going on.  She consulted a specialist for advice.  He may be starting to lose his kidneys(can be a side effect of long term Phenobarb' use), or it may be a kidney infection, or, it might be his med’s, or it might be none of the above~!  So, will be adding a urine culture to his lab work and it will take 3 days to know the results of that.  His alkaline phosphatates (sp?) are very high, double what they were in March, which was double what they should be, but, this is a side effect of the Phenobarb’.  Don’t know if that’s causing the problem.  In the urinalysis, his “specific gravity” (??) is quite low, but, should really have been quite high due to his med’s and being dehydrated, so not sure what’s up there.  She’s given me pain med’s for him, to try and help him with sitting up and standing, and if the new tests don’t show anything, they’ll do abdominal X-rays to see what’s going on in there, and to check his hips for arthritis.

He's hanging in there for now.  Doesn't seem to be getting worse, and LOVE's that he gets canned dog food, so hopefully we'll either keep this holding pattern or get a bit better while we're waiting for the results.

So, one more waiting game~!  ARGH~!

Oh Nicole~!  What a stressful time for you~!  I really hope Mabel's med's help her, and that the house thing works out.  With the market now, they'll probably drop their price, or have to wait with it on the market again~!  On the plus side, YOU HAVE YOUR DAUGHTER BACK~!  ;D  Maybe not the way you wanted it to happen, but, she's there with you and away from that JERK~!  No child should have to deal with a parent who would do that to them~!  Oh, and UGH~!  First trimester was the worst with both my pregnancies, but, it too shall pass and leave you with a beautiful baby  :)

Hang in there~!  It will get back to normal soon~!

Woody is eating and drinking this morning, as long as I bring it to him.  LOL  It seems the biggest problem is he has a very difficult time sitting up or staning up, but, if he can just lay there, he'll eat and drink.  At least he's keeping hydrated, so that will help until we can figure out what's going on.  I'm just going to sit by the phone all day waiting for my call~!

"It may be that Woody was depressed when you were gone for the weekend so he didn't eat or drink as usual and he is just dehydrated and weak. That'll teach you to go away and not take him with you, huh?"

Actually, Woody is the first pet (dog or cat) I've ever had that doesn't stop eating when I leave him LOL  I did think about that, but since I had noticed little things for a couple days before I went, I knew it was more than that.  Plus, when I'm gone, my DH is actually very nice to Woody~!  Reality is I don't like leaving the dogs at all~!

Ella's adorable~!  None of my dogs has ever refused food just because their tired, but, if they're not feeling well, they will.  My dogs and Kids and I did a 13 mile hike this Spring, and both dogs layed around doing absolutely nothing for about 1 1/2 days afterwards, but, they still ate (they're piggies that way). It is possible Ella pulled muscles on her walk, and because of this isn't feeling well.  Is she drinking water and staying hydrated?  If not, you might want to have her checked.  If she's drinking water, I'd probably wait a day or two before worrying too much.

Good luck, I hope she feels better soon  :)

OK, so, the vet took X-rays and did blood work.  The X-rays show Woody might have a problem on his sternum (or, he may have broken it at some time in his life) but she doesn’t think that is what’s causing the current problem.  Also, they found a heart murmur, but again don’t think that has anything to do with his current problem.  The blood work should be in tomorrow or Wednesday, so will hopefully know more then.  In the mean time, they fed him nice expensive wet food and he ate it.  DUH~!  LOL  He drank a lot of water for them, but, they also injected it under his skin, so his fatty tumors all look like one big fatty tumor on his left side now.  I picked him up a while ago, and he’s sleeping now, but did seem to have more energy than before.  So, I guess I need to go buy special wet food for him, and hope for the best with the blood work.

Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers everyone~!

Oh, the one thing that irritated me, was everyone keeps telling me, "Well, he is old", yeah, he is old (11), but that doesn't make it easier to accept him being sick!  Maybe I'm just going into Mama Bear mode :(

I dropped Woody off this morning, as there were no open appointments, the vet was squeezing him in between everyone else. They just called.  They can't see anything obvious.  He's dehydrated, and pretty weak/listless.  They did find a heart murmur that he had not been diagnosed with before, and of course all his fatty tumors.  They don't think its West Niles, but are concerned he may have cancer again. They are going to do bloodwork, and take chest X-rays along with seeing if he'll drink enough water (otherwise, they need to inject it under the skin or use an IV--If they use an IV, he'll need to stay overnight).  They're going to call me back in a couple of hours after they complete the X-rays.  If the X-rays don't show anything, and he's hydrated, they'll send him home to wait for the bloodwork results which will be either this evening or tomorrow.  Ugh~!  I hate waiting~!  And, poor Maple is moping around the house~!  She's not used to being alone.
