Mixed Breed Discussion / Also about doodles
« on: August 02, 2008, 02:41:07 pm »
I read a post about doodles a few days. I feel the need to say something about them.
I myself won't get a new doodle puppy from a breeder. That said, I am not against doodles in anyway. Most of them I saw were very friendly to both people and dogs, though a little excited in some cases. Their owns were also responsible people.
Any dog, be a pure breed or mixed, can bad temperament if coming from a irresponsible breeder. I've heard about or seen quite some golden, lab or other pure dog that either too excitable or dog aggressive.

Events to go to or join / Dog Days of Scugog 2008
« on: July 26, 2008, 04:59:06 pm »
Last Sunday we 4 of us went to Port Perry for this event. It was a rainy day, not a lot of people showed up, but we had a good time there.

The first thing we saw was the Dock Diving held by Ontario DockDogs. Most of the dogs were quite eager to jump into the water, but some dogs were reluctant to get wet.

Book Club & Noteworthy Reads / About Buying books from dogwise.com
« on: April 18, 2008, 12:38:35 pm »
I come across the dogwise.com the other day. There are quite some good books about dog training and other nice topics. Have anyone bought books from it? Is it reputable?

Thanks

I am not sure about the breed, but she is similar in size with Butter. When she stared at me, I walked in another direction, but she still stared at me. This lasted for around half a minute. The reason was probably guarding a ice cube from the water bowl. I went over to her owner and told her about her dog. I said this was a dominate behavior which should NOT be directed to human. She admitted her dog was pretty dominate to her other dog, and she left the dog park probably not so happy. Actually before this, the dog was guarding the water bowl.
Did I overreact?

Anything Non-Dog Related / Winter Driving(long)
« on: February 06, 2008, 08:00:39 pm »
According to the radio, up to now it has snowed more than last 2 winters added together. We have had a snow storm with 1 foot of snow.
It has been pretty rough for drivers.  I am not experienced driver myself, but I want to say some people need to use more common sense. I have seen quite number of cars loaded with thick layer of snow on top of their cars. Apperantly, it's pretty dangerous... One of such car had to stop, because the snow fell on the windsheild, completely blocking the view. Fortunately, it was on a side street. Some other drivers are just too impatient. Yesterday, the side road was pretty bad, all cars were driving very slowly, except for one car, who overtook the car ahead on a road with thick layer of snow... According to the Toronto police, most of the weather realted accident can be avoided if driving careful enough...

Mixed Breed Pictures / Butter's Latest pics(Feb 2008)
« on: February 04, 2008, 09:05:51 am »
Butter is 13 month last Sunday, and I would like to share some pictures of him.
The 2 pictures below was taken during morning last Saturday. He met his buddy, another labradoodle within our neighborhood.
The picture was taken when I saw the other doodle. This is what usually do when he sees another dog coming. When other dog is close enough, he'd jump up and play...

For myself, I have been feeding Butter Canidae All Life Stages over 6 months and now at 13 months old, it's his 5th 40lbs bag. He is steadily doing better with it,especially after I increased his daily intake since Nov 2007.
See the following thread for the reason I increased his feeding.
http://www.bigpawsonly.com/index.php/topic,19760.0.html

I should say he is his best state since we got him... He is now shoulder height of around 27", and almost perfect weight of 67lbs. The previous 2 bags of 40lbs was used up after 44 and 45 days respectively. So that's around a little less than 1 lbs daily.
What about yours?

P.S. Below are 2 pictures taken last Sunday.

Food Discussion & Information / Is 3 times a day bad for 1 year-old
« on: February 03, 2008, 12:01:47 am »
I have been feeding Butter 3 times a day since we first got him when he was 12 weeks old. I am aware that we don't need to feed 3 times a day, since he is already over 1 year-old. We are trying to change it into 2 times a day, but he is so depressed about it, that he tries to lead us to his feeding place every a few minutes during lunch time. Anything bad about feeding 3 times a day?

Thanks

Book Club & Noteworthy Reads / A good book: How to speak dog...
« on: January 30, 2008, 03:21:20 pm »
The full name is How to speak dog : mastering the art of dog-human communication. It was written by Stanley Coren. It's more like an academic work with fewer pictures to show how dogs communicate, but once I started reading, I found it's quite interesting and learned a lot about dog communication. ..
Has anyone read the book? Any comments?

Thanks

I have been looking around in Chinese dog related forums for a while, and found some really disturbing even sickening information about how pets are treated there.
* Dog and cats are eaten in resturants or privately on a daily basis even in big cities like Beijing and Shanghai.
* Local animal control personnel forcefully take away from or kill them in front of their owners.
* A lot of People abandon their pets like used dolls. Stray dogs and cats can be found everywhere in crowded cities and coutry side.
* General misunderstandi ng about dogs with the misleading information from state run media
* Lack of basic knowledge about pets of ever growing pet owners.
* Ineffective or wrong government pet regulation:
  * 38cm height limitation in effect in many cities including Beijing.
  * overpriced regitration fee for dogs, ex.
         Beijing: 1000RMB
Shanghai: 2000RMB(larger dog like Golden Retreiver is not banned).
         Guangzhou: 10000RMB!?
   It's cheaper in smaller cities.
* ineffective rabies control
The list can go on and on...

Please voice your support...

Specific Website Information / About saving favorate Topics INSIDE BPO
« on: January 27, 2008, 02:35:23 pm »
The idea is when we find some interesting topics on BPO, we can always save them INSIDE BPO, instead of locally in our computers. So that next if we go to different computers, we still access the saved topics... Is this possible?

Thanks

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Myth Or Truth
« on: January 21, 2008, 07:35:40 pm »
I've heard from various source the follow tips about how to show your dog as the leader:

1. Eat before your dog;
2. Do not let your dog enter/exit a door or narrow opening before you;
3. Do not share food with your dog on your dinner table.
...

I used to believe the above statements when I was not so familar with dogs. But that more I know about dogs the more I am doubtful about them. From BPO and many other places, I tend to believe as long as we take control, and our dogs know it, we are the leader. For example, as long as we decide when and how much to feed our dog, not dog make us feed him, it doesn't matter who eat first... The same idea with entering/exiting a door... Am I right, or the above statements are true after all?

Please comment. Thanks in advance.

Food Discussion & Information / Canidae Kibble Change?
« on: January 15, 2008, 01:24:45 pm »
I bought new bag of Canidae All Life Stages several days ago. I found there are some darker colored kibble, and they are of different shape too. It seems to me not like overbaked, but rather more meat inside. Butter does not reject it like the overbaked kibble I noticed a while ago, and his poo is fine too... Has anyone notice this?

Modify to Add: the production date is Dec 10, 2007.

Butter was quite a bully. He kept harassing less confident dogs. He knew right away whom he can take advantage of. First a mini aussie, then a lab. Butter wouldn't leave alone them even they surrendered. The owners were a little upset about this. I had to grab him and led him away several times. How can I correct his behavior?

BTW, some pictures. Butter was harassing none of the dog in the pictures including the tiny guy, who had a very protective doodle checking back all the time.  So I had time to take photos.
