Mixed Breed Pictures / Butter is 1 year old(with pictures)
« on: January 03, 2008, 03:46:47 pm »
Yesterday was Butter's 1-year-old birthday. We didn't have any party for him, but he did enjoy some extra yogurt that he likes very much. He grows from a weak and helpless little puppy into a strong and healty boy. He's gentle, playful, and yet quiet, though he does get excited when visitors first come. We are so lucky to have him around. I also feel lucky to find BPO, I learned a lot by asking questions and reading so many helpful posts.

Below are some recent pictures and old pictures  for comparation.

Edit to add: The pictures were posted in reverse order by date except for the last one on the 2nd page.

I recently read a post in a Chinese dog forum which implied a Golden Retriever was going to be exported to China. This golden won several US/Canadian champions for his breeder who seemed to be a reputable(?) breeder. As you may known China is a not good place for dogs, I wonder why his owner would do this to his/her beloved pup. This golden aside, I've seen a lot of people on that forum boasting of US/Canada imported champion purebreed dogs... I also saw a post mentioning an older dog of such origin leading not very good life aftering being used for breeding for many years. Why people do this? Just for money? For improving the breed? Apparently, China is NOT a place for this purpose.

P.S. corrected a typo.

I found this on a Chinese dog forum. The disabled old man used to have a dog who dragged a cart carrying to and from country fairs to make a living for 11 years. Then dog died when he was 12 years old. The old man currently uses a electrical driven cart for the same purpose. During the 11 years, the dog had faithful helper and companion of the old man. He had saved the old man's life, when the cart overturned during a storm by calling for help. The old has never married and currently living with his brother. He once said it was difficult to find a 2-legged companion, but found a 4-legged one. Several scenes:
The rundown house was the place the old man lives. The tree with several stones is the tome of the dog. One of the picture was showing a healty begger demanding 1 yuan(RMB) from a passing car, yet the disabled old man was receiving 1 yuan for repairing something.  I am not very good at translation, so...

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Butter: the jumper
« on: October 28, 2007, 01:03:49 pm »
Butter have always been a jumper. But recently, this behavior seems to escalate. When a guest enters the door, he becomes so excited that he rushes over to the guest and jump up to lick his/her face wiggling both his tail and butt. Previously, he would only jump once or twice and then settle down. Nowadays, he will harass the guest for quite a while even if he is ignored.
Last Saturday, a college of mine with a little boy came over to visit. First thing he did was running over to us at the doorway, the boy was scared of him and cried, though he didn't do anything him, instead he jumped onto me first. The boy was led upstairs to a bedroom. Then he started to jump onto my college. He jumped so high that he reached higher than his head(6-ft tall man). :o My college commented Butter can do some agility training...
Last Sunday, my daughter's piano teacher came. Butter showed even more interest in the poor girl. He tried to jump onto her even when she sat down. Once he almost knock her down...

I am get jumped on whenever I come back from work, though every time when he jumps, I just turn aside and ignore him.

This is Butter's #1 behavior we need to correct him.
Any suggestions is welcome.

Thanks

Food Discussion & Information / Questions about Canidae Dry Dog Food
« on: October 16, 2007, 02:58:42 pm »
I have been feeding Canidae All Life Stages over 4 months switching from Iams Large puppy. This is almost no noticeable difference between the 2 foods: fur, stool size, how much to feed,... Also considering the price difference between Canidae ALS and Innova Adult below, with similar ingredients, how can Canidae make it almost as cheap as Iams? Is it possible that Canidae uses ingredients from questionable sources?

From www.nextag.com:
Innova Adult (33lb): $42.99
Canidae All Life Stages(40lb): $36.99

Mixed Breed Discussion / I don't know who to believe
« on: October 04, 2007, 11:06:56 pm »
I am not going to buy any puppy, but puzzled who should I believe. Is the pet owner lying or the breeder is a puppy mill. What's your judgement? ???
The pet owner:
The owners of ****************** are a bunch of crooks! They claim to be legitimate dog breeders but they are a puppy mill. I bought a little male boxer puppy from them in July and he was sick from the day I brought him home. He had a displaced pad on his back foot...

The breeder:
We..********** have never sold a Boxer puppy to a 'Jessica' . We did sell a white Boxer to a Bert. She may be his wife or daughter. She has never been here. ...

As you can see, his coat looks more like a retriever. When he is shaking himself or I am brushing him, I can see his hair falling off like snow. He has been go through similar situation( but less), when he was 3-4 month old, and then later on he was not shedding at all for 2 months, and started to shed more and more for recent 2 month period.
Is this normal? Is he going to shed less in the future?

Butter was neutered 2 months ago at 6 month old. After the proceture, when I took Butter from vet, the clerk's comments were Butter was so thin, but the vet mentioned he was slim, and he could some more weight after the neuter. Everyting was fine and his recovery was fast. But he almost stops growing. He was 47 lbs at 6 months, and now @ 8 month he is only 49-50lbs, and kind of more inactive. Everyone's comment was your dog was so skinny or he looked more skinny. We feed him Canidae All life stages 1x3 cups a day far more than the recommended amount of 1-2 cups, and he is hungry all the time. His stool is mostly firm(2-3 times a day), though he has runny poo 1-2 times a month. I am considering switching food. Is it OK to switch to high protein food like Orijen or EVO at this stage?
BTW, he has yellowish discharge in his eye recently. Is it normal?

Collars, crates, & other cool things / Easywalk harness:highly recommended!
« on: September 17, 2007, 02:25:19 pm »
I bought it online and have been using it on Butter for a week. It is realy wonderful. He was comfortable with it the moment he took it on. I can hold him still with one hand even if there is noisy puppy or running kids in front of him. There is basically no difference between walking in our quiet neighborbood or inside petsmart. A gentle tug on leash will correct him when he is walking too fast or is distracted.
In the beginner's training class, there are 2 puppies with head halters and 2 with easywalk harness, others are using plain collars. The easy of control is similar, but easywalk is way more comfortable. One of the puppy(yellow lab) has been using head halter for 6 weeks at least, and still is not comfortable with it and paws it all the time.
