Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Butter: My overfriendly pup
« on: August 07, 2007, 07:03:49 pm »
He is very friendly toward strangers, and other dogs. When he senses someone and/or dog is coming, he'll look at that direction and start to wag his tail, the tail wagging intensifies as they go nearer. If the person is without a dog, he will try to go to them, one jurk on the leash is enough to get him back. If the person has a dog, especially small dog, he'll pull on the leash so hard that it's difficult to drag him back. Most of the small dog we meet bark or even growl in this situation. Their owner will try to avoid him like he is vicious dog. Mostly encouters with big dogs are fine, the owner and dog remain calm and let him go near tem, and sniff the dog without a big fuss.
My question is how can I handle this kind of situation without leaving him bad impression of other dog(small dog in particular). Most of dogs in my neighbourhood are small dogs. Will he be OK in a dog park?

BTW, we are going to dog training class this Saturday. Hopefully, he will be doing well with other dogs.

Book Club & Noteworthy Reads / Death by the Pound
« on: August 01, 2007, 06:38:50 pm »
 >:(
Actually there are 2 articles having the exact same name:
http://www.miaminewtimes.com/2006-01-26/news/death-by-the-pound/
http://www.treshanley.com/cic/gas.html(2 articles inside).
Even wording for the reasons of death are similar:
"They are the wrong shape, size, color, or breed, too slender or too heavy or simply unspectacular— judged on appearance."

"They die because they are the wrong color, size or breed. They die simply because they are unremarkable."  >:(

Centralize past pictures into one post and add some new.

I just think about this idea. It'll be very helpful to let other people know about you and your baby.
For example: your intro post and/or other posts with a lot of pictures.

On 2 seperate occasions(both in the early morning @ ~ 7AM), I was approached by a Lab(around 80lbs), and unknown breed around the same size, when walking my puppy. I am concerned both because I have a puppy with me, and the attitudes these guys were showing. When I told them politely they should keep their dog on leash, they just ignored me.  Granted, their dogs are quite nice, they did not show interest in me or my puppy, but what if they met with someone who were afraid of dogs. This is quite likely, since in GTA(Greater Toronto Area), a lot of people are coming from cultures that does not view dogs as lovely pets. They may have bad experiences with dogs, and may act in panic, causing the dog to respond differently. A lot of people I met even avoided my puppy on leash long before I approach them...
What do you think?

Anything Non-Dog Related / I saw baby swans(long)
« on: June 15, 2007, 03:36:54 am »
There are a pair of Swans settle in the pond near my home since Early Spring(March?). The female swan has been sitting in their nest since Mid April. A fence with entrance in the water was installed to protect them. I almost walk my dog every day passing the pond anticipating to see baby swans, but saw none except the male swan protecting his wife and nest and the female swan sitting there patiently. Nothing changed until yesterday, the fence was fully enclosed. I went closer to take a look, the female swan was not sitting there anymore, but still saw no baby swan. Then this morning, I saw the 2 baby swan with their parents in small enclosed area of the pond! I'll post some pictures if anyone is interested.

Introduce Yourself to the Forum / A Late Intro
« on: June 14, 2007, 12:25:08 am »
Hello everyone, I am Edward, born in Dog year; immigrated from China to Toronto, Canada 6 years ago. Currently Owned by Butter II(goldendoodle) who is now a lovely 5 1/2 months boy. Before I got Butter II, we had our first dog, Butter I briefly for 2 months, a very sensitive and strong 1 year old Lab mix.  He is now rehomed and lives happily with his new family... I may talk about Butter I's story in another some day.

I got to know BPO while researching dog food a month ago, among the first posts I read was:
* Holly's Dog Food Dissertation
http://www.bigpawsonly.com/index.php/topic,9742.0.html
* Whole Dog Journal up-dated dry dog food ratings
http://www.bigpawsonly.com/index.php/topic,7435.0.html

From reading these posts, I began to know which food is pure garbage(Purina ...), which is a little better than garbage: Iams..., which is good food: Innova, Orijen, Canidae,....
There are also some other great posts. Through all these posts, it opened a whole new world for me. Thank you all.

A lot people are saying high protein is bad for large breed puppies. Why is that? It makes grow them too fast? Any evidence? Is it OK to just feed less and keep the same level of daily protein intake? For example, both Innova EVO and Orijen have about 42% protein, and it's recommended to feed 24% protein dry food to puppies, can I feed ~60% of high protein food? Please share your experience.

We got him from a dog rescuer who rescued him because the breeder found him having problem with right foreleg(just pulled muscle when walking on slippery floor) and was to put him down if no one want him. He is such a cute pup, we loved him at once. He was 12 weeks old and only 10 lbs when we took him home. For first 2 weeks, he was so weak, that almost sleeped all the time, and had little appetite for food and drank little water. At one time, we thought he was going to die. We changed dog food at the 3rd week, he began to get better, in the mean time, my wife did acupuncture on his leg. He is much bigger and stronger now, weighting at 25 lbs! His leg problem is almost unnoticeable. He now eats like a wolf, if allowed, he can eat all the food in a couple of minutes. I have to take away his food several times when he is eating. I walk him around 1 hour everyday, and also use treadmill sometimes if weather is bad.
