Medical Conditions & Diseases / Re: Paw Problems in the Cold
« on: January 19, 2008, 06:10:11 pm »
I tried putting Vasaline on her paws, but she just keeps pulling away.  I just took her out for a quick walk and kept her on the snow and away from the walkway.  At first she seems fine and then she starts to tiptoe.  I have no doubt that the combination of the salt, ice and snow are causing this problem, I just wish she would let me fix it.  She's always been sensitive about her paws ever since she was a puppy.  Clipping her nails is a nightmare, I've had to resort to just filing them, but she won't let me do that either.  This problem has caused a real backslide in handling her.  At this point I think I'm going to have to take her into the vet so he can get a better look and help me treat her.  I'm afraid that if I keep pushing to check her paws she's going to have a negative association with me and the pain.

Hi everyone!  Sorry it's been so long since I've posted, okay really long, but Cheyenne and I need some help.  There's been some snow and lots of ice here in IL and Cheyenne's not coping very well.  Outside she tiptoes and occasionally lays down when she can't walk on her paws.  I think the ice and salt are causing her pads to crack and she's in a lot of pain, but she won't let me touch her paws.  She actually growls and snaps at me, which is really not like her.  I got some booties to protect her feet, but she won't let me put them on her.  And I can't even see if there are any other problems with her pads, all of which seem to be affected.  I'm hesitant to take her to the vet, but I'm afraid I might not have a choice because I can't handle her properly without a second person and a muzzle (yes, she seems to be in that much pain).  Has anyone else dealt with an issue like this before?  This is her first winter and none of my other dogs ever had a problem like this.  She's got me really worried :-[.  Any advice is really appreciated.

What topic are we on again?  JK ;D  I've never heard of a vasectomy for dogs, wouldn't that kinda negate the purpose of controling their hormones?  Anywho... we have labs and Aussies all over the place where we are.  Cheyenne came from irreputable breeders, no paperwork, no deworming, shots, nothing.  Just "here's your dog have a nice day".  That's why she became a rescue before we got her.  Someone didn't do thier homework to see what they were getting into.  She's a great girl and we got lucky so it all worked out.  I have so got to post pics of her!

That sounds pretty simple and enticingly messy for a 4 yr old.  At what tempature and how long do you bake them?

I can't believe someone would do that to a poor innocent kitty!  And she's so pretty and sweet too.  I like the name they gave her, The Painted Lady, totally fits.  Everytime I hear a story like this I just want to scoop them up and protect them.  Too bad hubby's not of the same mind or we'd be over run by now.

I love the pics!  And what do daddys know about dressing girls anyway? ;)  My hubby is always giving me a hard time when I get Cheyenne a new set.  Since I started getting sets I liked, no one has mistaken her for a boy.  By the way, where did you get yours?  I really like it!

I'm so sorry you had to experience that.  There's nothing worse than losing a pet, even for a short period of time.  Luckily you got them both home safely.  You may be a little worse for wear, but it sounds like you're doing everything right.  When Cheyenne was spayed our vet told us to put Neosporin on her incision and it healed beautifully.  I wouldn't worry too much about Sky's Flyball abilities.  He'll probably be very anxious to return to his previous activities as soon as possible.  The amazing thing about dogs is, like kids, they heal quickly.

Okay, got it... Almonds really bad, soy bad, peanut butter not so good.  Maybe I should start a post asking for treat recipes.  There's gotta be something my son can help make that the dog can eat.  It would be nice if it didn't induce vomiting in the humans who make it.  Anyone up for Oatmeal Doggy cookies with brown gravy and molasses?  Mmm, yummy :P
Let me apologize now to anyone who's stomach just turned, I couldn't resist sharing ;)

Hmmm, the only thing I can think of with such a drastic change in behavior is that she might either have an infection or something traumatic happened to her outside.  Is she still eating and drinking well?  Have her stools changed?  Is she going more frequently?  Sorry for all the questions, it just seems odd that her behavior would change so dramatically so quickly.  I'm not a Pyr owner, so I have no idea if this is typical of the breed.  I'd suggest calling your vet just to make sure.  I'm not trying to scare you, you are way more experienced than I am.  I've got a puppy still so I have a tendancy to call my vet if I think her behavior has changed too much.  They're great at telling me to either chill or bring her in.  Better safe than sorry. :-\
