Food Discussion & Information / feeding raw?
« on: September 03, 2007, 06:32:23 pm »
I'm going to start feeding my dogs a raw diet along with their kibble. I was wondering how to introduce it into their feeding schedual now. I don't want then to get sick with really soft poop! (know what I mean?)

Ah I'm so frustrated and dicouraged and don't know what to do anymore. Annie was always hard to house break (took forever)anyway during the day the dogs are in the garage (heated with a couch) and Annie decided to start doing her business in there. I figured it was because the floor is partially gravel and cement. So I recently had the carpet ripped up and had tiles put down in the dog den so I could keep it cleaner. Well now she's doing her business in there too! I tried to kennel her and she went nuts and got her mouth stuck inbetween the bars. Upset everyone cause her cries where horrible. Never want to hear that again. Sorry for rambling but I don't know what to do. She is 5 now and the Tripper is almost house broken. I say almost because the minute he goes down there he also does his business so I don't allow him in the den because I don't want him picking up her bad habit. Merri is very clean on the other hand. I don't know what to do help someone, everyone. How do I fix this?

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Toxic foods for dogs
« on: August 20, 2007, 01:48:44 am »
I received this email today and thought I would share it witha all of you. Some pretty interesting things that I never thought could be toxic for a dog, like potate peelings. Sorry about it being so long.

This week I had the first case in history of raisin toxi city ever seen at MedVet. My patient was a 56-pound, 5 yr old male neutered lab mix that ate half a canister of raisins sometime between 7:30 AM and 4:30 PM on Tuesday.  He started with vomiting, diarrhea and shaking about 1AM on Wednesday but the owner didn't call my emergency service until 7AM .

I had heard somewhere about raisins AND grapes causing acute Renal failure but hadn't seen any formal paper on the subject. We had her bring the dog in immediately. In the meantime, I called the ER service at MedVet, and the doctor there was like me - had heard something about it, but....    Anyway, we contacted the ASPCA National Animal Poison Control Center and they said to give IV fluids at 1 times maintenance and watch the kidney values for the next 48-72 hours.

The dog's BUN (blood urea nitrogen level) was already at 32 (normal less than 27) and creatinine over 5 (1.9 is the high end of normal). Both are monitors of kidney
Function in the bloodstream. We placed an IV catheter and started the fluids. Rechecked the renal values at 5 PM and the BUN was over 40 and creatinine over 7 with no urine production after a liter of fluids.  At the point I felt the dog was in acute renal failure and sent him on to MedVet for a urinary catheter to monitor urine output overnight as well as overnight care.

He started vomiting again overnight at MedVet and his renal values have continued to increase daily. He produced urine when given lasix as a diuretic. He was on 3 different anti-vomiting medications and they still couldn't control his vomiting. Today his urine output decreased again, his BUN was over 120, his creatinine was at 10, his phosphorus was very elevated and his blood pressure, which had been staying around 150, skyrocketed to 220.. He continued to vomit and the owners elected to euthanize.

This is a very sad case - great dog, great owners who had no idea raisins could be a toxin. Please alert everyone you know who has a dog of this very serious risk.

Poison control said as few as 7 raisins or grapes could be toxic. Many people I know give their dogs grapes or raisins as treats including our ex-handler's. Any exposure should give rise to immediate concern.

Chocolate, macadamia nuts and onions are good examples. Each of these foods contains chemicals which rarely cause problems for humans, but for dogs, these same chemicals can be deadly.

·  Pear pips, the kernels of plums, peaches and apricots, apple core pips (contain cyanogenic glycosides resulting in cyanide poisoning)

·  Potato peelings and green looking potatoes

·  Rhubarb leaves

·  Mouldy/spoiled foods

·  Alcohol

·  Yeast dough

·   Coffee grounds, beans & tea (caffeine)

·  Hops (used in home brewing)

·  Tomato leaves & stems (green parts)

·  Broccoli (in large amounts)

·  Raisins and grapes

·  Cigarettes, tobacco, cigars

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Eye infection?
« on: July 25, 2007, 08:19:29 pm »
Hello, does anyone know what an eye infection looks like in a dog. I've noticed Tripper has a bit of discharge out the corner of his right eye and it seems red. This morning though it even seemed a litte swollen but I can't get a good look at it because he's such a baby and screams and wiggles all over the place when I try and hold him. (This will great for the show ring) LOL Any one know what this could be> should I have him off to teh vet or is there something I can at home?

Great Pyrenees Pictures / Merri my Champion
« on: July 09, 2007, 08:20:34 pm »
Hello everyone we're back. Merri took 2 reserve winners bitch and 2 2nd places. She didn't get that 1 little point we needed but I tell you she was beautiful in the ring and so well behaved. I had awonderful time with her she made me very proud. One of the only dogs that didn't say a word all weekend. So in my eyes she is a Champion. I was advised by my breeder friends to take her out again and she will get that last point so no retirement yet for Merri.

Tripper was a success as well. I had to keep a close eye on him for fear of having him stolen. What a show off he was. He knows he's cute that's for sure. I can't wait to start showing him in the fall.

Here are a few pics from the weekend of Merri, Tripper and my friends puppy.

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Puppyhood
« on: June 30, 2007, 12:24:00 pm »
Hello everyone, as I type this and have to get up and chase Tripper through the house because he's stolen something that he shouldn't have I ask myself why did I go out and spend a small fortune on toys and chewy bones for him when all he wants are my things? Is there a reason for this? Why is it they like everything else that doesn't belong to them? I amazes me that he wants nothing to do with his toys.

Great Pyrenees Discussions / New to board
« on: June 26, 2007, 12:31:00 am »
I'm new to this board and think it's great that I have somewhere to go and hear about puppies and dogs. None of my friends have the same passion as I do except the people I trial and show with. I'm a little lost trying to get around and post and see what is going on. Can someone out there give me a hand?  :)

Food Discussion & Information / Hello, I'm new to this
« on: June 22, 2007, 11:05:21 am »
Hello, let me introduce myself......I'm the owner of 3 Great Pyrenees and very proud of it. I'm not sure how to get around this site but what I have read so far is great. I love it that there are other people out there that have the same interests and love for the giant breed. MY dogs are Annie (5 yrs old) Merri ( 2 years old) and Tripper (14 weeks old). I have questions about puppy food (bad poop) and (weight) The pup doesn't weigh enough. And ??? I'm not sure how to go about posting and where to ask? Can anyone out there give me a hand?
