omg.... our vet bill was $528.. but well worth every penny to have her back to her "normal" self. she still is having a little trouble walking, but thats because she hasent used those muscles in days.... shes on a special diet now, and on 3 medications.. money is nothing when you compare it to what shes worth to us, you cant buy that...

it is very painful... its a very sad disease. it will start to go away as her bone growth slows and she matures. some end it around 8months, some a year... right now shes almost 5months...

Awww, I'm so glad you found a good vet. Hmmm, I'm wondering if there's a chance of pancreatitis?  Charge had it once and had very similar symptoms...Als o, once the pancreas flares up, it can cause the liver to flare up.  Just another thing to test for...I sure hope she gets better soon!

Here are the symptoms per a vet website:

Common symptoms of the acute form of pancreatitis in dogs include a very painful abdomen, abdominal distention, lack of appetite, depression, dehydration, a 'hunched up' posture, vomiting, diarrhea and yellow, greasy stool. Fever often accompanies these symptoms.

thank you for that! i will be sure to ask him about it. and HOD is hypertrophic osterdystrophy . what happens is her bones grow very rapidly and unevenly (in the legs) and it causes inflamation and extreme pain in the joints, also high fevers, loss of apetite (i wouldnt have one either if i was in that much pain!)its a very horrible and painful disease...

Great Dane Discussions / Finally getting my little girl back today
« on: July 18, 2007, 09:48:44 pm »
SO as many of you know my little baby girl Great Dane has HOD. Well i just changed vets (who i now love!) and she had a bad flare up. She wasnt responding to the medication he had given her the day before (which she had in the past once and it worked wonders for her) She was shaking, had a fever of 104, wouldnt eat or drink, and had bad diarrhea. The day before when i took her in to see him she weighed 37.8lbs, and the next day she only weighed 34lbs. she lost 3lbs overnight. so he examined her and wanted to keep her overnight which was very fine by me. well one night turned into two nights... they called me and let me know that they were having a hard time getting her fever down, and although they put a lot of fluids into her (IV) she still was a bit dehydrated and they wanted to keep her another night. fine by me i just want her feeling better! the first night she was in i had nightmares about losing her and i couldnt sleep, it was the worst flare up shes had yet. but finally yesterday night they called and told me she could probably come home today but they wanted my approval to do one last test on her. they want to test her liver function. he was telling me about the two levels of something the liver produces ( i cant remember the names of them) and that they were very very low. he thinks maybe her liver is contributing to her flare ups being so bad and hard to control. of course i gave him the ok!! the results of that take about 3 to 5 days to come in, but in the meantime i can have her home! he said shes eating like a maniac now, drinking, and is walking a little bit. he said he was happy to see her wagging her tail and being happy. i guess they really like her there too, shes such a sweetheart! i just thought id give some of you an update who wanted to know about her! i will say, im very happy with my new vet. they called me atleast 5 times in the 2 days she was there to let me know everything! im happy they care!

oh god, at the farm we have our standardbred racehorses at, the neighbors dont like us. they do a lot to make our horses go nuts. they put scarecrows up all over, plastic bags on sticks to blow in the wind, and thats just in their garden that they just HAD to put RIGHT NEXT to the track we have. one time in the winter one of the guys were jogging and the a***holes decided to drive their snowmobile up and down the side of the track, and he ended up in the middle of the track in the pond with the horse. well the other day my cousin was jogging one of his horses and they decided to set of fireworks... and this is at like 2pm! needless to say his horse when balistic! my thought is, you cant see them anyway so why would you set them off! theyre so annoying. then they let thier dogs get loose and chase our horses around the track. i cant wait to get a chance to call the cops on them!

sorry to hear class wasnt so great. i actually just got home from what was supposed to be my pups 3rd class today. she only got to make it to the first class then her HOD acted up so bad she couldnt make it to the second or this one. we decided to pull her out. luckily they gave us a full refund and told us not to worry about taking the puppy class and to just enroll her when she gets better in either the beginner or intermediate class.

oh i have read everything i could. i just got back from my vet appointment. i was there for an hour and a half! he went over her nose to tail, and wanted to know EVERYTHING and went over her records with me... what shocked me was how WRONG her records were. they had wrong weights recorded, wrong dates... EVEN THE WRONG BIRTHDATE AND AGE! how absurd! how much can you really NOT CARE!! my new vet is awesome! he told me how bad he feels for her and he was going to do whatever it took to make her feel better and get her through this, and he told me he was going to call me tomorrow to check up on her. they helped me out to the car and everything, they were awesome! the other vet just stood around and watched me struggle to get my pup to the car, shes just under 40lbs! its not easy! no matter how strong you may be (and i am pretty strong) that pup is heavy and hard to get around when she cant help you at all! he gave me 2 perscriptions and told me when to use them and so on and so forth. i was just so happy with them already. i was actually talking to a woman in the waiting room with her dog who used to take her dog to the vet i was at before, and we even had the same vet there.. she said she would never go back!

I know... I agree with you all. Its a sad thing.. and the way i see it, pets shouldnt get any less care than people do at the doctor, and thats the way i want my pup treated! i have to look at it and say "would i be happy if my doctor did this or that to me, or treated me this way". im going to a new vet today... well sort of new. i had been to him a long time ago when a stray cat had kittens and one of them broke its hip. he told me i had the option to have surgery on it, put it down, or see how it went for a while and then decide what to do. he had me come in the day i called, and didnt charge me anything to have him look at the kitten. i will say, he is a little crazy, but if he knows what hes talking about, and wants to help my baby, then crazy is okay with me! i called this morning and they got me right in for an appointment at 1pm. i called my old vet to have them fax over the records and they were so rude. the girl was like "well we will get around to that sometime today".. and i was like, noooo NOW! it wasnt her business she was losing, it was the vets. now i know i will NEVER go back there!

I agree on getting a new vet! Honestly, I have 2 wonderful vets at Banfield inside PetsMart, one is from Canada and one has worked on all types of animals. There is a 3rd vet, but I have not had a lot of dealings with him. I drive 45 mins one way to take Adak there. If I need a prescription that they don't carry, they are even willing to fax to me or to the place where I am getting it filled.

i know, its rediculous that they wouldnt give me a perscription because they dont have it in the office. wouldnt that really be the reason for writing me one..
