i just need some answers! last night i didnt get to bed untill 6am. she was up all night crying.. first she had a fever, then the pain just wouldnt go away! i felt helpless, and not to mention exhausted! i just dont want to do the wrong thing, but i want to do something immediately. its not fair for her to be crippled like this and in so much pain! it breaks my heart

Im so frusterated with my vet im changing tomorrow morning! He just doesnt care! When i had x-rays done of my pup he told me she has HOD, he was supposed to call me the next morning with the results of her bloodwork... HE DIDNT... he went on vacation for a week so i had to see his fill in when my pup really needed stronger meds because she hadent been able to walk in 3 days, she changed me but it didnt work either, and then she finally did what i wanted (which did help), then I wanted to talk to my regular vet about other options i could start immideately. Since he was on vacation it wasnt like i could talk to him right then, but they did tell me he was coming in to do a surgery and they would have him call me. well when he hadent called by 2 i gave them a call. they told me he did the sugery AND LEFT!

When i needed a perscription for some meds for my pup, they wouldnt give me one because they didnt carry it at the office.. hello, isnt that WHY they would need to write me one. So when i went to my other vet for my horses to get a perscription he wanted to see her x-rays and blood work. he told me he didnt think she had HOD.. he thinks she just has a bacterial infection of the bone! and he wanted a second opinion as well so he is sending it to a vet he knows in canada, he says shes the best vet hes ever known. im just glad one vet is interested in helping. the only problem is i only see him on race nights at the track.(which is only 4 days a week, and hes mostly tied up at night checking the horses all night) sooooooooo i have a HUGE headache! i just needed to vent about how aweful some vets are!!!

we took Chloe our great dane pup to class once so far. Shes very quiet and LOVES the teacher so she just sits there and watches her all class, shes the little teachers pet! but we were next to a dog named Sparks. and hes ooooooooooooon e bad egg! the woman brought him there as a last resort before she gets rid of him. i guess hes bitten her 6yr old kid before and he wont listen. he got nasty with the teacher too, but since SHE is the alpha dog there, he eventually backed down. i cant really blame sparks for his behavior because as we found out, the woman leaves him at home with her kids a lot and shes "not sure" if they hit him or not. it was kind of suspicious to me that if you went to pet him he would give a little jump like you were going to hurt him... thank god the teacher asked right out if they hit that dog... sadly her reply was "i dont know, im not home" HELLOOOOOO?!?!?! do you see something wrong here?

What is HOD?

HOD stands for Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy . Its where the bones grow too rapidly and unevenly. it causes extreame pain in the joints, swelling in the joints, and high fevers. some days (most days lately) shes inable to walk at all. its very painful, and if it isnt kept under controll she can die from it. Unfortunately now i went to another vet to get another opinion on what to do with her since my vet just seemed uninterested in helping me (not calling me back, not explaining any x-rays to me, etc.) he doesnt think she has HOD, he thinks she has a bacterial infection in the bone. soooo hes getting another opinion from a vet he knows in canada for me. he says shes the best vet hes ever known. hopefully i can get some more answers here and theyll tell me whats really going on!

I wish i could work more with my pup. before she got HOD we started training her and she can do sit, shake, high five, lay down, "look at me" (to get her full attention), and leave it. but since she cant walk at all some days and is sore so many others, its hard to work with her at all. :( but she hasent forgotten what she knows!

haha thats cute. my little girl KNOWS what the camera is for and when she sees it she just stands there looking at it, tipping her head to the side, and perking her ears up a lot.

I was a little concerned when i first got my pup and she got hiccups all the time (i had never had a pup before aside from when i was young) so i asked the vet. he told me that its normal because they arent quite sure how to stop swollowing air yet. it will happen a lot when they get excited or eat or drink.. most anything. nothing to worry about. i had kind of figured that, but i didnt want there to be something wrong with it and it get ignored. hiccups are really cute though... so are her burps. her face is changing and looking more mature, so her cheeks are starting to droop.. when she burps the air goes into her mouth then you see her lips puff out and flop back down and you hear a sound like "whhhhooooooo"

Im not sure about my pup Chloe. I had her at my friends house once and she stood on the pool deck acting like MAYBE she would take a dip... but i didnt want to let her because i didnt want her to put a hole in the liner. I do know that her mother used to love the water, but her father wouldnt go in it... guess it just depends on the dog.

Thats alright, once i found rabbit turds when i was really little in the winter. I tapped on my moms window to ask her what they were, and she told me brown jelly beans... you can probably guess what happened next!... yeah, i wasnt happy when it didnt taste like a jelly bean! i still hold that against her to this day... :o

I feed my pup Eagle Pack for large breed puppy (shes only almost 4 months old.) I used to feed Eukanuba but she has HOD, so I needed something without all the fillers and crap and that would slow down her growing so that her HOD would subside a bit. Aside from the million and one suppliments she has to have in it.... i like the food. and she seems to like it a lot too!

Wow, looking at that pic of Scooby is like seeing my Dane when she gets big. Hes adorable. I actually dont have a problem with Chloe and any shyness. I was lucky enough to be able to bring her to work with me every day and she got used to seeing different people a lot, other dogs, some cats, and a whole bunch of horses (which she just loves). Shes very very fond of other animals, no mater what kind. We also always took her to family parties and to petsmart and stuff with us, wherever we could take her we did. She was always tought to sit when someone comes up to her so that we wouldnt have the issue of her jumping up on people, because as you all know, when theyre large and they jump on you, its not a good thing. But we have been able to make her very accustom to any animals or people, and i agree with everyone else, i think its because we exposed her to it a lot, and got her used to it. Fortunately we got to do it right off with her when she was 9wks old, but i dont see how repitition couldnt work with an older dog too.
