Medical Conditions & Diseases / Too bouncy pup
« on: November 06, 2007, 08:27:49 am »
As some may remember, nearly 2 weeks ago we rescued a saint bernard girl, believed to be 9 mo old. She has put on some weight, at her last vet visit she was 31.3 kg, and is adjusting quite well in our pack.

My main concern healthwise is her bones and joints now (the fast growing pup was kept on incredible food, mostly apples and potatoe peelings, no meat, oil or even cereals), and here is my problem: she is too bouncy pup. Like bally dancer.

She walks and runs a bit, not much excesises allowed so far, as she was chained for past 4 months at least. But she is soooo happy to be free, that even at home she can out of the blue just jump over any of my dogs - some are higher than she. I'm trying to stop her, but then again she looks at me like I'm banning all the fun.

Maybe you can remember your large breed pups - were they jumping so high at that age and how their joints are now?

I'm going to rescue a 9 mo old saint tomorrow. His owners moved and left him behind - so he has been on chain for last two month (7 -9 mo). As a small pup he was on RC kibble, thatš ok, but for last two months he got grain porridges only (without even a meat).
Do you have any ideas how to feed him from tomorrow on to establish him? Can I give him some kibble or better continue with small amounts of porridge with meat in and then gradually give him beter food?
He will be probably only a temporary foster if that (I'm not sure what my dogs will do, they greet small dogs with pleasure, but with such a large dog they may not treat him as a pup anymore) but the feeding shedule is needed as other foster has no internet and no English as well.
Please, if you have any ideas, post them tonight here.
Tomorrow I'm leaving early for 2 hour trip one way to pick poor baby up and then I will be not online probably for a long time.

Hi! Last night a new foster come into my house - a lady took her to the shelter, and did not give any info on the pup. Nothing. For me the baby looks very alike Australian shepherd pup. She has brown nose, these amber colour eues and is white/brown colour, with dark spots on her muzzle and brown spots on her white socks.
The only thing her coat seems to be a bit shorted than PB aussies have. So I'm asking you - do you have any pictures of your pups at 10-12 weeks of age so I can compare her coat and body structure?
I even can not post a picture of her now as my camera will be back on Wednesday only (if that).

I know many people here have collies and shelties, so please help me.

Maybe you can tell me which breed mix she could be?
She has light brown spots on her white paws and white end of tail.

FAQs about puppies / New foster-Chihuahua mix probably
« on: October 08, 2007, 11:54:27 am »
I have new foster at home - Gino. He is probably Chi/pekineese mix, about 10 weeks and very very cute baby (they all are as babies) He was found at the rural bss stop with nobody around, but he seems to be well socialized, civilized and he was definitely well cared - he had no worms at all. He likes brush and allowed to trim his nails without any fuss like it must to be. So from one side he is very cute and easy foster.

(sorry for poor quality, my camera is in city, this I made with webcam :()

And now is my problem - DH wants to keep this lil monster! Me noooooot! I do not like jappy lil dogs, and I even asked if DH will be ready to walk the dog in pink pijama with fancy pink lead and some Swarowsky cristals... and DH said WHY NOT? Can you imagine? He thinks that it will be great fun - me walking all 3 GSD  and him - this tiny parody of  a dog.

You with large dogs and small dogs at home - tell me please is it working? I mean at household? For example, at night I'm keeping him in crate (just to be sure that he is safe) and he already accepted that in first 2 minutes. I have him since last night and today all his naps he spent in cage by himself - voluntary :) Taking his toys with him.
My dogs are extatic about new pup at home and even if they are cofused about somebody, much smaller than cat, that they must treat as a dog, they do well - play with him in very very gently. But the size difference is scary - foster is about a size of my dog's muzzle if that.
Is it safe to have such different isze dogs at home? And beginning of Feb the Saint pup will arrive too. I'm already joking that this lil monster has nearly perfect saint markings, maybe only tail needs a bit more brown - it is 2/3 white, but for saunt 1/3 is better :D
It would be really crazy fun to keep them together - saint and this lil miniature version of saint

But I worry about safety and what happens if they will start to argue? An accident? Good job there is no food agression in my home - lil one is already sharing food with big dogs, nose to nose.

Just got info from my breeder - her bitch, mother of my future pup is on heat!!! A month earier than planned so for me it means - I will get my pup a month earlier!!!!
I'm sooo excited and happy! If somebody a year ago would tell me that I can feel extatic just because someones bitch in another country is coming on heat, I would laugh quite rude...
:D

Happy me!

Anything Non-Dog Related / Any gardeners here?
« on: September 14, 2007, 11:26:56 am »
People, I need help with landscaping advices! Do you know any good gardening web site with advices for LARGE gardens?
So far I have found plenty of advices for something like half acre gardens and smaller, but it is not for me - I have 14+ acres to be turned into the garden and I can not afford huge mistakes, so please, if you have spotted pages with advices how to group the trees and large shrubs to create parks or something like that, please, pass them to me!
I'm sitting over the plans and my head is going around - I have baby oaks, chetnuts, maples, firtrees, different shrubs and many other things but no ideas how to put them together!

Anything Non-Dog Related / The stork story continues - new pictures
« on: August 06, 2007, 12:02:00 am »
I need advice how to feed a stork. So far he refused to eat anything, including the fresh (alive) fish and frogs.
He is injured and very emaciated so some food is the main thing.
Today the poor bird has half of his wing amputed so it means that we shall have a new pet at home if he will survive.

Some pictures of todays op, if you are interested to see (it was done in our kitchen by our local vet)

Well, I have some dogs but this thing about Saint pup again in my house makes me feel like pregnant for the first time! :)

I would like to prepare everything for the first 6 months. So please give me advices of sizes of the collars (I presume, there will be at least 3 different needed for the first 6 months), and then we shall need one nice for the first confirmation rings in the puppy class.

Water and food bowls - ordinary ones or raised for the puppy? Believe or not, I can not remember these things!

Which brushes do you use for brushing and grooming your pup? And so on and on and on...
