Anything Non-Dog Related / Today's pictures of Bertie, the Stork
« on: August 08, 2007, 11:41:17 pm »
So here comes today's pictures

Look into my eyes!

He enjoys his pen (sorry, it does not look professional, but when you need, even pig wire is out of stock! Silly, but here we are - used leftovers to arrange him at least something)

This is his little house for shelter/den/shade/food

Permission given for a spash! (Dogs are @asking@ stork now for permission to use the pond - it is weird how they communicate, but after permission is given, stork is not frightening at all when dogs just dive in few feet from him.

One more, please?

Hmmm, let me think about it!

A bit of washing

That's better!

Time for a food!

Got it!

A bit of water on top

Yes, he is having all the fun! It is not honest!

We want fish too!

Uff, I'l better stop, that's a lot!

The second and the third fish are gone so ... HUUUUURRRAH! He is eating now by himself!
I still will give him one special meal at night so his tummy will be full at night and then he will need to learn how to eat from bowl not alive food - winter is not so far away, and it is impossible to provide him with alive food during the winter.

But, anyway, it is a VICTORY! I'm so happy about him! He is a keeper!

He ate it by himself! And he is really perky!

We have hope!

Thank you! I'm already making nice mixture of fish/dry dog food/egg yolk and vitamines, all with water. he likes it, but all house now smells like a bad South fishmarket :)

I use syringe for force feeding as he is still not eating by himself. We tool him out for anice walk to the pond in hope that he will pick something up by himself but he just rinced his peak in water and that's it...
But he enjoied his walk a lot so we will repeat it tomorrow and if he will feel better, we shall build a larger pen inthe pond - maybe looking at so many frogs will cheer him up?
Anyway, if you are interested, look at

Bertie The Stork pulled through the night, refused to eat by himself so we made minced fish +catfood+vitamins+egg yolk porrige with some water and force fed him. We got down his throat about 25 ml, notenough, but will repeat later again. Hope he will start to eat by himself soon...
But now he is 24 hours under our care and still alive... I have some hope!
Our dogs already accepted him as a new pack member.

OK, I will try to explain better... I do have great relationship with my vet, but she has her limitations. Before the op we got some info on medication usage and op technologies out of our only bird expert in national Zoo and some info from Ohaio wildlife rescue. Our vet is very rural vet, so no experience with wild birds at all - she tried her best, but that's about all that she was able to do. She as well as myself hopes that any wildlife experts will be able to give advice.

No, we do not have any wildlife rescue centres in my country, believe or not... There are talks for years but no success so far. If animal is rare our national Zoo takes it but white stork is not rare here, so they refused to take him (I already called them this morning as the first thing).

There is no hope that the stork can be ever returned in wildlife. Even if vet would be able to save the wing, it would be too weak for migratory bird like stork to make trip to Africa so he will be our pet or dead - no third way. So I just try my best in this situation. But probably the poor bird will not make it... He is in poorly condition and maybe it will be better as he can not be very happy to be a pet :(

I need advice how to feed a stork. So far he refused to eat anything, including the fresh (alive) fish and frogs.
He is injured and very emaciated so some food is the main thing.
Today the poor bird has half of his wing amputed so it means that we shall have a new pet at home if he will survive.

Some pictures of todays op, if you are interested to see (it was done in our kitchen by our local vet)

My favorīte breeds... hard to say as I just owned some and do not know much about others. I really tried to put Top10 together, but failed...Sorry  ::) So

Saint Bernard
German Shepherd
Landseer
Had them, have them and love them to pieces.

Then maybe
Leonberger
Bernese Mt. Dog
Irish Wolfhound,
but about these I’m not sure, I would like to try maybe one of these someday if... or something like that. But no... Honestly only Saints and GSD

I so love the rough coated Saints, yet I ended up with 2 short haired. LOL
I'm the rough coated fan, and only LH boy will be my pick. SH coat is much easier to keep perfect for shows, but I just do love the rough coated Saints too much!

When is the bitch being bred or is she already expecting? Oh you're going to have soooo much fun.

She WILL be bred only in October (probably at the end of October) so it is sooooooooooooo oooo many hours and seconds to wait, as in the best case I will be able to take my Oakhill's Gilroy home at the end of February!

But I believe that he will be worth all this waiting!

keep us updated on how her pregnancy is progressing.  :D

Is? I will be lucky if that pregnancy will only start in October and pups will be born around Christmas, then I will need to wait next 4 weeks to see if there is any LH male to be named Gilroy and then at least another 4 weeks to bring him home!

Too long to wait and too many "if" so I'm a wreck aready... :) Sorry to you all, please bear with me, I will definitely get on your nerves until I will get my pup!
