Treatment & Preventative Meds / Car sickness
« on: September 09, 2007, 04:41:02 am »
I don't really know if this is a medical question per-say, but I figured this was the best place to ask it.
Does anyone else have a dog with a terrible car sickness problem.  My poor Naja HATES car rides.  When we go anywhere in the car, (which is anytime we go anywhere at all b/c I live out in the country and the car is the only way to access even the closest park) she gets terribly sick.  She won't get in the car on her own b/c she equates it with being sick.  We only ever go places that are fun in the car, to the park, or my dads house (he's got a nice big back yard that's fenced so she doesn't need to be on leash) to play with his dog PIMA.  She's always good when she's out of the car, happy and playful.  But as soon as she's in the back seat she lays down.  She doesn't always get sick, in fact it's really only 7 times out of 10, but that's still the majority of the time.  On long trips I have to give her half a childrens gravol, and even then sometimes she throws up.  I just feel so bad for her, I want her to like car rides so much so I've been trying to slowly get her used to them, but it's not working.  I'm not going to be able to drive with her to BC when the time comes to go home if she is like this, and I REALLY don't want to have to put her on a plane.  :-\
Does anyone have any advise on what I should do?  Should I stop making her go on car rides, or is there some sort of trick you guys have used in the past?
Thanks for your input in advance!

Food Discussion & Information / Do the old Food Switcheroo!
« on: September 03, 2007, 01:19:42 am »
Hey guys!  ;D
So I've gone a switched Naja's food from Nutra Natural Choice LB Puppy formula to the Canadaie All Stages.  I figured this would get her on a better track health/ growth wise.  But I've been noticing since I mixed the two foods together to get her used to the new stuff, her pooh has been well kinda watery.  It's pretty gross.  She's had the runs a little bit, nothing that I'd worry too much about cause it clears up after the runny poop, and it's gone away now.  But her poops are definitely not solid.  Should I wait until I've got her only on the Canadaie, and see how she reacts to that, or would you say that it's not agreeing with her tummy, and I should get her off it right away???
Any input would be great.  I'm not in any rush, it's just she's got a pretty sensitive tummy anyways, I really don't want to push it more then I have to.  Thanks guys!!!

Hey so I was messing around on Facebook and came across this great cause to donate to this great organization that rescues, treats, and rehomes Pitties (especially pitties rescued from fighting rings)!  So I thought I'd share the link with everyone here.  There's alot of neat information there, and also a place where you can donate or show your support by becoming a volunteer.

Medical Conditions & Diseases / List of Poisonous plants
« on: September 01, 2007, 06:35:18 pm »
So I've got alot of houseplants that my dogs just LOVE to get into and dig in the pots and eat the leaves.  So I've been looking for information on what plants are dangerous, and I've found a fantastic list of all the poisonous plants to dogs; so I thought I'd share it with all of you!  I think it's pretty complete, and I know I'll be moving certain plants out of my puppers' reach as soon as I get home from work.

Anything Non-Dog Related / Crones Disease
« on: August 30, 2007, 02:14:34 pm »
Does anybody know anything about Crones Disease?  My baby sister who is only 20 years old was just diagnosed with that as well as Interstitial Cistitus (sp?).  I don't know much about either disease, so I just thought I'd ask you guys while I do other research.  I'm sacred and worried for her.  She's gone through so much in her short life, I hope that she is able to get treatment, but from what the docs say, her choices are limited.  If only a small part of her bowels are in Necropsis then she may be treatable with Steroids, but if she has too much damage, my poor baby sister might have to spend the rest of her life with a colostomy bag.  I don't know what to do to help her.

Great Pyrenees Discussions / The growth of a Pyrenees puppy
« on: August 29, 2007, 08:11:43 am »
Just had a few questions about growth.  First when should I expect Naja to start loosing her baby teeth, and having her grown up teeth grow in?  She's got an awfully long snout and her little baby teeth are getting pretty few and far between if ya know what I mean.  lol.  Also, when do you think I can expect her fur to fill in a bit, like her mane and tail?  Every picture I've seen of grown up Pyr's they have these beautifull long manes, and tails that could sweep the floor.  I'm getting jealous of Yukon and Yiska!  lol
Also, I've gone a bought a GIANT bag of Canadaie All Stages, but I forgot to make sure it was Large Breed before I left the store, and lo and behold when I emptied it into her food holder thingy it didn't say large breed anywhere on the bag.  Hmph!  Should I go back and get another bag? or is this one okay?  It's like 40 lbs of food, so I'd hate to waste it, but I definately can't take it back.  lol
Okay!!!  Thanks
oh PS, more pictures of Naja to come soon.  Must figure out how to get them from my cell phone to the computer!

Groans, Gripes, Brags & Boasts / Ewwwwwwwwwww!!! Dead things and Poo...
« on: August 23, 2007, 03:08:48 pm »
Yuck!  :P
So I got home from work at 7 oclock this morning, and took Naja out for a short walk before I feed her and then go to bed myself.  It's a leisurely stroll so I think nothing of it when she lags behind to sniff at things as puppy tend to do.  I look back at her, and what do I see hanging from her mouth you ask?  No not her cute little puppy tounge, no not a stick.  I see part of a squirrel, or some other grey coloured furry thing that looked like it had been dead for about a week!  YUCK!  And the little bugger swallowed it before I could fish it out of her puppy mouth, not for lack of trying on my part.  As soon as she realized I was going to go for it she doubled her pace ofn chewing and as I'm reaching into her mouth she's swallowing her icky treat.   :P
We have alot of squirrels and cats and other fuzzy things in our area so avoiding seeing them dead is just about out of the question.  What I want to know is...Is there anything that I can do to discourage her from or train her to not want to eat them??   ???
It's not like I want to deprive her of something she loves.  I just don't want her to love eating poop or dead things.  We have a dairy farm so there's lot's of poop too.  lol

Groans, Gripes, Brags & Boasts / ARAGH!! So Angry!!
« on: August 22, 2007, 05:34:36 am »
OMFG
Okay I knew that Micheal Vick had a pretty big part in a dog fighting ring.  And that for one makes me MAD, but I JUST saw a picture of one of the poor babies that had the misfortune of having been a part of this sick and twisted and EVIL mans game of "sport".  I seriously want to vomit.  How any person, I don't care who you are or how much money you have can think that this is fun is beyond me.  I'm not one to harbour bad feelings toward anyone.  But Micheal Vick May you be forced to endure all of the things that you forced these poor innocent animals to endure.  May you feel as much pain and may you suffer just as much as these dogs did.  You deserve so much worse.

I'm sorry guys.  I'm not usually such an angry person.  I jsut needed to get that out, and I'm at work so I can't really have a loud outburst, so a typed one will have to do.  But I'm gonna go cry now, so talk to ya later.

Puppies 1; Alex 0!
Here's the background,  I took the puppies for a walk a while ago, we live on a dirt road and it's been raining so they got quite muddy.  When we got back to the house I got them some fresh water and left them on the porch (We have a nice covered porch that's all screened in) for them to dry off.  I went in and started dinner, cleaned the kitchen, loaded the dishwater etc.  When I figured they were dry enough (maybe half an hour) I went out with a towel, wiped off their dirty paws and brought them in to have the rest of the dirt brushed out.
Anyhoo, dinner time came along and the puppies were hungry so I went out to the porch where I keep their food seperated in sealed tupperware containers.  Well lo and behold Moo's (the Cairn Poo) food container had been knocked over, opened up and emptied of all contents!  There was a good 7 or 8 cups worth of food still in there, enough at least to last the little one till the end of the week.
Now I notice Naja's tummy is a little swollen, not huge mind you, but definately full of food.  Now I'm worried about Boat.  I don't know if I should be, but I've been reading so much about it lately that I'm kinda worried.  Could eating that much food cause it, and should I give her water, she's awfully thirsty, but I'm scared that if I let her drink, then the food (Which we were planning on switching to a grain free food that won't expand at all) will expand in her tummy causing her to be sick or worse get bloat.  Is this something that I should be worried about?  Am I being silly?  Should I take her to the vet?  She did already have one small poop since I noticed the food gone.
Someone help me please!  I'm making myself crazy worrying so much.  My step father says that she'll be fine, but he's not so much a dog person as more a cow person. (We have a dairy farm)I could use some advise on whether I'm being silly or not.
Thanks
Alex

So I followed the link that you provided MaryPyrs, and started snooping around on that website when I came across this, I guess it's a blog.  I haven't even finished reading it, but I thought I'd share, cause it is too funny and cute to keep for myself!
Look around on this site for those of you who haven't been fortunate enough to go here yet, there is ALOT of information regarding a whole lot of stuff, plus these cute stories under "Sophie's World".

Great Pyrenees Pictures / Finally pictures of Naja (and Moo)
« on: August 12, 2007, 03:30:50 am »
Really sorry it took me so darn long to get some pictures of Naja up on here!  Word has been constant, so I haven't had time to do much of anything that didn't involve working or spending quality (non-computer) time with the puppies.  ;)
Anyhoo!!!  The long awaited pictures of my girl!  Also in the pics are Moo, our Cairn Poo, you should see them play together!  it has to be the cutest thing I think I've ever seen!
He only weighs about 6 lbs, and she's already 30!
Oh that reminds me, I've gone through the food forum on here, but am still unsure of what I should be feeding her.  I've got her on Large Breed puppy food, but she seems to be growing far too quickly; should I look for Giand breed puppy food, or switch her to adult food with a lower protein percentage?  Also I'm going to be getting her on liquid Glucosamine, do you think that's a good idea? If so what else have you guys used in the past to help protect tender puppy joints from getting sore as older babies?

Okay, tried to add the photos themselves, but they were all too large, so try this link here.  I hope it works!

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Baby Pyr!
« on: July 25, 2007, 07:04:15 am »
Hi!  I recently acquired a pyr puppy about 2 weeks ago ;D, and was told about this site from a friend of mine who has another large breed dog.  Naja is just about 12 weeks old and growing FAST :o!  She's gained several inches in the 2 weeks I've had her home.  I'm feeding her food for large breed puppies, but is there maybe something different I should switch to to slow it down to avoid Hip Displacia when she's older ???.  She's the cutest puppy I think I've ever seen, but very lazy.  Her energy levels are very low, she's much more content to be napping at my feet then chasing a ball, I've tried taking her for walks but she keeps wanting to make her way to the grass and sit down.  Any suggestions at what I could do to get her energy levels up? ???
Thanks !!!
