Food Discussion & Information / Food Food Food
« on: December 03, 2007, 10:29:24 pm »
Okay, so Miles is almost 6 months old now....and has been on Canidae, Eagle Pack Large and Giant Breed Puppy, Natural Balance Fish and Sweet Potato, and today, I just bought Sold Gold Wolfcub (which I'm wondering if I should've picked up the wolfking instead because of the protein...but it'll be ok I think).

The reason he's been on all these different foods in his short life, is because I can't find one that he's done well on. I mean, he's done fine with all of them...but I don't consider any of them to be any better than the next. His stools have always been somewhat loose...but better on the Natural Balance.

Well, I decided he needs more than natural balance has to offer. It's good to have a limited ingredient diet, but this is too limited. Also, I have issues with the fact that potatoes are listed as the first ingredient.

SO....I decided to try the wolfcub. It has no wheat, soybeans, corn, animal fat (other than what is naturally ocurring in bison), no poultry fat, by-products, etc, etc.... So basically...so unds good I suppose....

Right now Miles eats 6 cups of food a day split into 3 meals. (I tried two meals...and he is not a fan of that. haha) Since this wolfcub is 26% protein and 12% fat, I understand that is a bit on the higher side for a BP puppy...(hence why I should've gone for the wolfking but anyway...) I am assuming Miles is going to go crazy with less food.

Three Questions.

What do you feed YOUR dog(s)?

Opinions on Solid Gold WolfCub/WolfKing?

What are some healthy snacks that I could give Miles in between meals so he doesn't drive me bonkers!?

Question.

Miles' hair is CURLY on his back. It is just a strip on his back though. Is it just the fact that his coat hasn't fully developed yet or will it always be like that? Everywhere else it is relatively normal. And he's growing a nice thick tail on him ;D...I was just wondering if anyone elses pyr had a curly back...and it turned normal eventually?

(P.S. it's not poodle curly or anything....it's just got a bit of curl to it when it's wet...then its sorta wavy when its dry)

Yep, that's right. Miles now has the personality of a cat. His favorite past time is laying in the window sill watching outside.

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Ahhhh! Help!

So I was in the bathroom doing my hair...getting ready for the day. All that jazz. And Miles gets in the bathtub. He likes to get in there. Well, He RUNS out of the bathroom like he took something from inside the bathtub....He was sort of foaming at the mouth. I stuck my finger in his mouth and poked around in there but it was too late. HE ATE A BAR OF SOAP! Sure enough, I look in the bathtub, and the half used bar of soap is missing!

Has anyone else dog eaten soap before!? Do you think he'll be ok!?

Mmmk. So I had this great idea to get Miles a Halloween Costume. I found this CUTE Dinosaur one with the following sizes: XS S M L. Soooo I thought well, he's only 4 months old...I'll get him the medium. That should be good. Well, I got home today, put it on...and it's WAY too small. It's still sorta cute though...hahah a. Thought I'd post some pics of the beast! (P.S. I also included some others from the dog park.)

FAQs about puppies / He is REALLY Pushing My Buttons
« on: October 24, 2007, 04:33:45 pm »
Miles has been SUCH a bad dog lately! Mainly with not listening...an d biting me...and acting like HE is superior to me. I'm tired of positive reinforcement and ignoring him when he's bad. It's not getting through his pyr head. I am now starting to scold him and make him get in his bed or "time out" in the bathroom when he is misbehaving!

Ahhhh, haha.

I know he's old enough to understand biting is bad. It doesn't matter how many times I walk away...or give him a toy...or yell. or scream! Yes, he's teething, but he has a million other things he can chew on!

And when we're walking and he wants to go one way, and I want to go the other, or he doesnt want to walk at all, he'll just plop in the middle of the sidewalk. I can yank and pull as hard as I want. Nothing. So then eventually I go to pick him up, and he'll try to bite me, because naturally I pull away and he thinks I wont try to pick him up. I've begun to nip that in the butt...by grabbing the back of his neck so he cant really get me. But my DOG, he is seriously too smart for me!

He will also not listen to commands anymore if he doesnt want to.

He's only 4 months old! I thought this kind of behavior didn't come until later!!!

Ahhh. ok. I feel better now. I just needed to vent.

P.S. He tried to hump my leg today, and that was the last straw. His little butt was in bed after that one. And I am no ignoring him. No dog treats ME like that! hahaha

P.P.S. It's not like I let him walk all over me either. I go out doors first. I make him sit before he gets his food. I guess I just need to be a little bit more firm. I am pretty much a softy when I get those puppy dog eyes that say, "Mom, I didn't mean to."  ::)

P.P.P.S. He's been doing really good with potty training! (But everytime I say that he has an accident shortly after sooo I should've kept my mouth shut! :-X)

FAQs about puppies / Question about puppy teeth
« on: October 24, 2007, 07:55:41 am »
So, Miles is losing puppy teeth like crazy, but some of his adult teeth are coming in, yet his puppy teeth haven't fallen out yet! Like, in the front those itty bitty teeth in the front are still there...but the adult teeth are also growing in, so he's doubling up on the front teeth! Am I going to have to take him to the doggy dentist!?

I don't know if anyone else saw this, (it was on Good Morning America or the Today show this morning. I forget which one). Anyway, www.dogsindanger.com It's a website with dogs in shelters that only have a short time left before being euthanized. It's a very sad website. Actually, I don't know if I recommend you go there if you're not interested in another dog. It's so sad. :'( Anyway, just thought I'd share just in case someone is looking for another dog.

Great Pyrenees Pictures / 4 months old today!
« on: October 09, 2007, 11:44:28 am »
Miles is four months old today! It has been very cold and windy today but Miles loves it. He doesn't want to come in! SO, we had a little photo shoot outside. Also, I weighed him today and he's 34 pounds (at least. He wouldn't sit still for more than 3 seconds.) Does that sound right to all you pyr owners (or former pyr owners) out there? Just want to make sure he is staying on track ;) Here are some pics:

Boy it's windy! Look at the leaves flyin' around! And my EAR!

Caught One! (Finally!)

FAQs about puppies / He thinks he's an acrobat
« on: October 01, 2007, 12:35:53 pm »
Ok...Sooooo I'm just sitting here on my laptop...check ing out BPO and such.....and all of a sudden out of the corner of my eye, I see Miles get on the futon which is to my right (the couch I'm sitting on and the futon sort of make an "L" shape if that makes sense.) There is a fan sitting in between the couch and the futon and all of a sudden I see him jump from the futon OVER the fan(unsuccessfully might I add)...and on to this couch....to do what? Attack me!!! haha Ok, well...a play attack. In the process I'm pretty sure he hurt himself because when he first jumped..he landed flopped over the fan. hahaha Who does he think he is doing all these acrobatic moves!?

Well, I was SO excited...that I locked my keys in the car...with it RUNNING! ::) I'm pretty sure I get way too excited about dogs....especi ally big ones. haha I think I'm the only person in the world to lock their keys in the car to go see a DOG!

I have the keys now! 70 dollars later...all because of a dog. :-\

FAQs about puppies / I swear, I have the most difficult puppy ever
« on: September 18, 2007, 08:16:17 pm »
Miles is SO bad. haha There's never a moment when he's into something he shouldn't be! And I thought I had the place puppy proofed!

He chews on EVERYTHING. I redirect him with his toys. I put bitter apple on places he really shouldnt be chewing...like the carpet, walls, coffe table. Yeah, it doesn't work. He could care less if it tastes weird!

He's so stubborn. He will only listen when he wants to listen. He knows sit, down, come, paw, off. And the only one he does whether he wants to or not is sit(and sometimes it takes me telling him 3 times and pushing his butt down to do it. Then he'll whine like I'm killing him for sitting! haha) hahaha Will he ever do the other commands when I want him to (not when it's just convenient for him!?)

And boy is he persistent. On walks, if I want to go a different direction than him, he'll sit his little butt down, face the direction he wants to go, and will not budge! Pretty soon I won't be able to get him to move!

I feel like I'll just be wasting my time at a puppy class. I don't think they'll teach me anything I don't already know. I don't know if they will have experience with especially stubborn puppies like Miles. He's not that easily motivated. What do you think. Maybe I should get a personal trainer?

My question is for you pyr owners. What advice do you have for me? I have a feeling the stubborness will only get worse as time goes on. Is there any way to change this behavior or should I just learn to live with it now? hahaha :D

P.S. The thing that made me start this thread...is the fact that I went to the bathroom...was gone for maybe 30 seconds...I come back...and Miles is STANDING on the coffee table! He is seriously nuts!

« on: September 14, 2007, 04:12:21 pm »
I know a few weeks ago there was a post about how Canidae was supposedly contaminated with acetaminophen. After doing some testing at independent labs, Canidae has tested negative for acetaminophen.
