Great Pyrenees Discussions / Re: drool question
« on: November 13, 2007, 06:23:56 am »
Naja Drools when she's in the car, drinking, hot, or when there are food and treats around.  But I think it's cute so I don't mind.  You know it's funny, I keep hearing and reading that Pyrs are not food motivated, but I've never met a dog more food motivated than my Naja.  I think that just makes her more special.  ;)

Jack is food obsessed as well, I'm wondering if that will slow down a bit once he's full grown.  We'll see!  We also heard how they don't care much about food and how they don't need to eat as much as most large/giant breeds due their slow metabolism but that is certainly NOT the case with Jack.

Jack (Pyr) drools when he's watching us eat or waiting for his food.  Oh, and when we go to the pet store (but again I think it's because there's food and treats EVERYWHERE)!

Other than that he's not a drooler - thank god!  I couldn't deal with that on a regular basis - it GROSSES ME OUT!!!

Greta (Swissy) doesn't drool at all. YEA!!!!

Heya, Im wondering if anyone can help me. I have a 6mth old PMD. His name is Bear:) I had a Pmd, Max, but sadly he died on christmas day last year. Bear is causing me to worry! He seems somuch smaller and slighter then Max did at his age. Max was a large boy, he was gorgeous and had an amazing coat. He was even Irelands top PMD in his hayday!! But Bear is not from a show bloodline as Max was, Bears parents both are working farm dogs. I feed him Beta Giant puppy food, and he gets stress powder, eggs and cod liver oil in his diet. any suggestions on his diet?
Also Bear has doubledew claws on his front and hind legs, any idea how this would be seen in the show ring?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

Is he shaved in the more recent picture or is that how his fur is?  His tail especially doesn't look like a typical Pyr tail, by that age it should start to be very bushy.

As for the Beta food, I see it is made by Purina.  If Purina foods in the UK are anything like the Purina lines in the US then it's not very good food.  Here they contain a lot of fillers and more corn/grains then meat.  Without seeing the ingredient list (which the Purina Beta website does not provide!) I can't really say for sure.

Here are a couple pictures of Jack at about 6 months.  His parents are also working farm dogs.

FAQs about puppies / Re: 2 Great Pyrenees Puppies/ 5 weeks

There was a dwarf pup in Jack's litter as well - from the looks of that pup, I would suspect dwarfism.  This usually doesn't result in any major problems but the dog will obviously be much smaller than an average Pyr.  Be sure to mention it to the vet - as far as breeds go, Pyrs are one of the more common breeds for dwarfism.

Food Discussion & Information / Re: please help....

Our dogs are trained to lay in the dining room, but not right by the table while we eat.  If they keep this distance and don't watch us or beg during our meals then they get a piece of chicken or beef or whatever we were eating after we're done.  At first we had to put them in "downs" when we ate but now they know that when we go to the table and sit down it's time for them to take their positions and wait quietly.  If they whine or stare at us or exhibit any signs of begging then they don't get anything.  It's a great way to reinforce the behavior you want and to ignore the behavior you don't like.  If you don't want  to give any "people food" then keep a few of your pups favorite treats on the table and toss one his way when he's ignoring you while you eat.

Treatment & Preventative Meds / Re: Yukky ears - Poor Teddy! What can I do?
« on: November 06, 2007, 06:41:54 pm »
Here are some GREAT drops that you can use for preventative treatment and cleaning.  My sister-in-laws Dane used to get recurrent year infections all the time and then she started using these drops and giving her Nzymes and now she doesn't get them anymore.  Here are the links.

Treatment & Preventative Meds / Re: AHH Harley ate grapes!

The study I read said that as few as 8 grapes caused toxicity but it didn't specificall list the breeds/weights of the dogs tested so I'm not sure.

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Re: Re-curring ear infections
« on: November 06, 2007, 09:17:18 am »
My sister-in-law's dane had recurring ear infections and was constantly at the vet for drops/antibiotics.  She switched to a wheat free food (Eagle Pack Holistic Select Large & Giant Breed) and started using the following two products and the dog has not had a single ear infection since.

Foods with grains in them increase yeast production in your dogs body which can cause major problems in dogs with recurring ear infections, so I think switching to the Eagle Pack Holistic or something else like Innova Evo or California Natural that is grain free would be an important first step in prevention of future infections.

Good luck!

Great Pyrenees Pictures / Re: couch potatoes
« on: November 06, 2007, 09:07:38 am »
Ours aren't allowed on the furniture or in the bed and I've never actually seen them try to get on either, however they do have a "loophole" where they'll actually "sit" on the furniture.  By that I mean their butt is on the edge of the couch but all 4 feet are on the floor.  Our Swissy especially does this a lot and it cracks us up.  Jack only does it occasionally.  He much prefers the hardwood floors to lay on.  He doesn't even like his own soft dog beds so why would he like our comfy couch?!?!?

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Re: How much exercise for adult Pyr?
« on: November 06, 2007, 08:54:12 am »
We do aboug 2 miles first thing in the morning and another 2 - 3 miles after dinner.  Jack is usually the slow poke on our walks but we've found that if we walk very briskly and he has to trot, he keeps up better than if he is just at a walk.  They are quite capable of keeping up and going the distance but they'll definitely lag behind if you allow it.

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Re: peeing question
« on: November 06, 2007, 08:51:46 am »
Jack is notorious for holding it.  He'll go to the door when he has to go #2 but never when he has to pee.  Sometimes he'll refuse to go in our yard when we take him out and I'll have to walk him to the empty lot next to us and then he goes right away.  He does the same thing with pooping sometimes.  We always try to get him to go before we start our walk but sometimes we spend 10 minutes walking around our yard and he won't go. Then we get 2 houses down and he goes in the neighbors yard - it's VERY frustrating sometimes!!! :-\  You can set your watch by our Swissy's bathroom schedule and I've NEVER had to pick up after her on a walk - she'll hold it until we get home.

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Re: How much does your Pyr weigh?
« on: November 06, 2007, 08:45:05 am »
Jack hasn't been to the vet in over a month but I would guess he's at about 105 lbs or so and he's 10 months old.  He'll probably top out at about 130 or so, we think.
