Hi Neicy!  Your pup is gorgeous!  I wouldn't worry too much about training a BC.  In my experience, BC'd don't need food rewards (at least mine wasn't very food motivated), they just seem to learn by being with you.   All they want is a pat on the head and they're happy as can be!  My old BC, Max, was so smart.  He seemed to know what I wanted from him before I even knew.  He was just amazing! ;D  Good luck with Lucy!

Oh Kathy!  I'm so jealous!  I wish my hubby wanted to get an IW! ;D  They're one of my favorite breeds!

But honestly though, I understand your hesitation to add another big paw to the family.  My house is bursting at the seams with my 4 sons and 4 dogs.  As much as I'd like to adopt just about every dog I see on Petfinder ;), I have to consider what would be best for the family I already have.  I know that down the line when my kids and dogs are a few years older, I'll be able handle another dog or two.

Maybe for you, it will be sooner.  You seem mostly worried about how you can physically manage so many big paws, especially when the ones you already have still pull on the lead.  I had the same problem with my pyrs up until last Friday when I bought them both Halti collars from Petsmart.  It's like a miracle!!!  Now I can walk both dogs at the same time and neither pull AT ALL!!  I can literally correct them with one finger!  I can't believe I waited months to buy these things.  Maybe they can help your guys, too?

Good luck! :)

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Re: ~*Your Top Ten*~
« on: November 24, 2007, 10:21:51 am »
My favorite breed of all time is the border collie.  The rest of the list is in no particular order because I love them all for different reasons.  I love the smart soulful eyes of the wolfhound, and the soft velvety ears and carefree attitude of the bassett.  I like the way a borzoi moves and the way a golden just wants to please you.  Honestly, I could probably go on forever, so I'll just get on with the list...

 1. Border Collie
 2. Irish Wolfhound
 3. Newfoundland
 4. Great Pyrenees
 5. Bassett Hound
 6. Borzoi
 7. Great Dane
 8. Golden Retreiver or GoldenDoodle
 9. English Springer Spaniel
10. Bernese Mountain Dog

Great Pyrenees Pictures / Re: Using a 100' lead
« on: November 20, 2007, 12:23:53 pm »
Thanks for the advice.  I'm going to try to find a lead with the swivel latch and clamps already on it.  I just don't trust myself trying to tie some fancy fisherman's knot, ya know?  And maybe I won't go with 100 feet, but I want something long enough that they can get a good gallop going without me having to get pulled along! :D :D  They love to run, and I feel so guilty not giving them that simple pleasure.  They're still young, just over a year old, and they have so much puppy energy.  Walks help, but I think they'd enjoy the occasional "freedom" of a long lead.  The park hubby and I would take them to is more like an open field, so I wouldn't have to worry about them running anyone over or tripping them up with the rope.

Oh, and it's SOOOO nice to see grass in the backyard finally. :) Funny story, we let the Scott's Lawn guy spray weed killer on the lawn last June, which as it turns out is a VERY bad idea when your lawn is 90% weeds!!! ;D  And then add 2 pyrs who's main goal in life is to dig to China....  And there ya go!  Big Mud Pit!  But now it's more beautiful than ever, and the puppers will have much more supervision when they're finally allowed out back again.

I'm so sorry about the pups that didn't make it.  Please remember to take care of yourself while you're caring for the remaining babies and the parents.  You're all in my thoughts and prayers.

Great Pyrenees Pictures / Using a 100' lead
« on: November 19, 2007, 03:58:35 am »
We recently had our nice little fenced-in back yard landscaped, with lots of pretty new sod, but now Zeus and Apollo have no where to enjoy a good run.  (No foot traffic allowed until the roots are well established!)  We take 'em for walks and they have a small fenced-in side yard to play in, buy it's only big enough for jumping around and wrestling.

So I was wondering if I could use a 100 foot rope from Lowe's to let them stretch their legs at the park safely.  (We don't have a doggie park nearby, so that's not an option.)  Anyone know how to attach such a rope to the collar without it coming loose?  I'm just a little nervous that my knots will come apart and they'll get loose.  With their history of being strays and my one experience of them getting out of my yard and taking off, I'm not naive enough to think they'll listen to me off lead!  Any advise will be greatly appreciated! ;D

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Re: Fence Question

My pyrs can easily jump a four foot fence, so we have six foot fencing all around.  They will sometimes try to dig under the front gate, so we dug about a foot down and filled it with cement.  They will also occasionally check the latch with their noses, so we've had to put brackets at the top, middle and bottom of the front gate that we keep 2 X 4's in.  This also ensures that nobody can get into our backyard and accidentally let the dogs escape.

OMG! The photos are great!  Isn't it funny how the big paws take up about 90% of the couch and the humans are all squished to the edges? ;D  Too funny!

Ken,

You asked about tasks for her to do...  I never actually gave my Max a particular job.  It's not like I had sheep or cattle waiting around for him to herd or anything.  I think he was just happy being at my side.  To get rid of some of his BC energy, we would play fetch for about an hour each night.  My dad owned acres of land, so I would throw the tennis ball as far as I could about a million times until he stopped chasing it.  That's how I knew we were done for the evening!

Anyway, I just think that being my best friend was enough to keep him mentally stimulated.  He went everywhere with me, even to college!  I think that all the warnings really just mean don't leave a BC in the house all day while you're at work and think that everything will be in one piece when you get back.  They get bored when they're alone and a kong with peanut butter won't be enough to make them happy.  They only want you!
