Great Pyrenees Discussions / Check out these new Canine Good Citizens!!!
« on: October 30, 2008, 12:46:36 am »
Apollo and Zeus passed their CGC test last night!  I'm so proud of them both. ;D ;D ;D  Now we just have to take the Therapy Dog International test and they can finally volunteer at Children's Hospital of Michigan, where I work.  I'm so excited to share these guys with all the kids at the hospital!  I just can't believe how far they've come since last year!  I'm such a proud mama!   ;D ;D ;D

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Re: Pyr kisses

Zeus and Apollo never lick.  What they do is nudge your face with their wet noses, so you still have to wipe your face after their kisses!  Now my Yorkie, Sebastion, will slip his tongue in your mouth if your not careful!  He's so quick, and it's totally disgusting.  What a freak! :P

Great Pyrenees Pictures / Update on Zeus and Apollo (pictures!)
« on: August 07, 2008, 07:30:16 am »
Hi everyone!  I know I haven't posted anything in a while, but I still love this group and read everyone's posts often.  I've learned so much from you guys and I just really appreciate what a caring group of people BPO is.

Zeus and Apollo are doing excellent!  They are about 2 years old now and have really filled out.  Both are 100 lbs of fluffy, white sweetness.  They are currently in obedience class and we hope to get them certified for therapy work this year.  We've also started taking them to an indoor/outdoor dog park in Detroit and they just love socializing with all the dogs.  We also started taking bike rides with the dogs and now they run about 3-4 miles a day.  (Boy, does that make obedience class easier when they've had a nice long run just before! :D

I'm just amazed what a difference one year has made for these guys. When we got them in June of 2007, they were skinny, slightly nervous, very hyper and destructive, and occasionally aggressive with one another.  And now they're just the most wonderful companions I could've ever wished for.  And I thank you all for the advice and encouragement this BPO group gave me.  You guys helped make them the great dogs that they are now.

I'm adding a link to some photobucket albums, one of the dog park they go to, and one of my family walking the Detroit riverfront with the dogs.  Hope you like it!

Meet & Greet BPOers / Re: anyone in SE Michigan??
« on: August 07, 2008, 07:01:42 am »
Hey all! We're in Southgate, not far from you guys at all!  Anyone going to Bark in the Park at Stony Creek Metropark this weekend?  That would be a great place to meet up!  We went two years ago with the little paws and had a blast!  We're looking forward to taking the pyrs this time!

Has anyone been to the Dunk N Dogs Pet Wash in Livonia?  They have "Pooch Parties" a couple times a week.  I haven't been there yet, but it sounds nice.  Here's the link:  http://www.dunkndogs.com/

There's a really cute pair of dogs at Detroit Animal Control.  I'm attaching a links for their Petfinder pages.  If anyone's interested, I could pick them up!  They look so sweet!  The shelter's hoping they get adopted together because they're "brothers."  I wish I had the space. I'd sure love to have them!

Groans, Gripes, Brags & Boasts / Re: I missed oprah....

Thanks so much for posting that link!  I ended up watching it on my break at work and couldn't help crying off and on throughout the show.  Thankfully my fellow nurses are animal lovers also, so they totally understood.  It was definitely hard to watch, especially the scene where the shelter worker had to put down all of those beautiful, healthy and sweet dogs, but at the same time, the show wouldn't have been so moving if it wasn't included.  It was a great show, and Oprah is wonderful for bringing this issue to the attention of her millions of veiwers!

Helpful Groups & Dogs in Need / Re: Great Dane in Michigan pound
« on: March 31, 2008, 09:54:27 am »
Honestly, they probably didn't even look.  When we went to get Zeus and Apollo from them, Apollo had this huge engorged tick on his face and nobody bothered to remove it.  The place is staffed with prisoners mostly.  The dogs get food and water and shelter, but not much else.  All the dogs from that place get the same generic write up on their petfinder page basically saying that they're strays and they can't guarentee the health or temperment of the dogs.  It's a sad, scary place really.  I hope this guy finds a nice home soon.

She may be less of a woman, but she sure is getting to be a BIG girl!  I love the pictures!

I just saw this guy this morning and had to post his link here, in case anyone is looking for a beautiful Dane.  He must have just came in because I didn't see him there when I looked on their site Sunday.  This is the same shelter I got Zeus and Apollo from. The adoption fee is $35 but they don't provide any vet check or anything.  They told me last year that they don't put their dogs down much anymore unless they run out of space, or have a reason he can't be adopted out.  So I don't think he's in danger yet or anything.  But if someone's interested, I could put in a call.  Here's the link:  http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=10532587

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Re: play yard
« on: March 31, 2008, 05:14:16 am »
That's why we put the patio stones down for Zeus and Apollo's outdoor kennel (where they go potty.)  And because of our new landscaping and pretty new grass, the boys have to play at the tennis courts down the street when the ground is wet and soft.  That way they get their exercise and I get my nice backyard!  Everyone's happy! ;D  And I don't have to deal with muddy paws in the house!  Yeah! :D

74
I'll be waiting for updates, too!  And keeping my fingers crossed that you get him, Marie!  So glad he's safe now, though.  What a relief!

75
Oh, I'm so anxious for the this guy!  I'm glad he's going to be safe!  But now I'm hoping that you get him, Marie!  He'd have such a great home with you!  I don't know what I could do to help except transportation, but Jane, please let me know if I can help in any way.  I'm available most of today, but I have to go into work later tonight ~ 10pm.  I mapquested the shelter and it's just under 4 hours away from my house, which is do-able, but would be a tight squeeze.
