One of our Great Pyrenees puppies is so small we think he is a dwarf. The dwarf stats say most are hard of hearing or deaf (out of 18 tested only 2 could hear normal).  I'm almost positive Peppy is deaf. He doesn't hear anything. Its so sad.

We have two back doors about 20 ft apart and the pups keep coming to the wrong door. Little Peppy cries and howls to come in while I'm standing a few feet away calling him. His sister comes right away. Poor Peppy doesn't come until he sees me.

We have done everything, clap, whistle to test him. His sister looks right at us but Peppy hasn't a clue.

I now use a flash light at night to get his attention. Pry's have a tendency to roam so I'm worried about him not hearing. We have an appt with the vet next week. I'm taking aall the medical info on dwarfs. Maybe a dog whistle will work.

On a lighter note, I Peppy's coat is was looking ragged compared to his sisters coat. I thought maybe it was going to be a problem too -- but today I realized his coat is usually wet from being mawed by his big sister Precious. A good brushing brought it back to normal. :)

Thanks for listening.

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Any Puppy Training Advice?
« on: November 16, 2007, 04:51:37 am »
My puppies were crying a lot in their 42 inch crate so I made a boundry around the crate to give them more room. A few days later I included that are and the bath room. Now its expanded to full run of the family room (wood floors), bathroom but no other rooms.

CRATE: I have one 42 inch crate that remains open for them to come and go. Unless we leave for a few hours--then the are locked in the crate.

Peppy, the little 4 lb guy love the crate as a bed. Precious 13 lbs now prefers the bathroom for sleeping.

Right now we are going our almost every hour in the day time and twice a night after dark for potty trips.

Our three boys and I hang in the family room so we're almost always together.

Think I'm making a mistake not using the crate more? The potty is going well. A few pee accidents but not too bad.

Thanks,
Robin

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Fence Question
« on: November 16, 2007, 04:15:34 am »
On another post Mary mentioned not needing a fence. That got me hopeful. I have 2 pry pups now and need to prepare for when they get bigger.

We have 20 acres. My house is in the middle. Parts are fenced for horses but a Pry can get in and out. Will I really need adog  fence after I get both dogs fixed? I was hoping to let them run the whole property.

If you think I will need one--by what age?

Thanks,
Robin

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Pry Dwarf (maybe)
« on: November 16, 2007, 04:01:25 am »

I have emailed some photos of my two prys and most think Peppy is a dwarf.

Both are now 6 weeks old. Precious is over 13 lbs and Peppy is 4 lbs. They are so cute its hard to get anything done. All I want to do is watch them play.

I do worry a bit becasue Precious is so much bigger and tackles Peppy a lot. I end up holding Peppy when Precious is too playful.  When they are outside I'll hear Peppy yelp and look out to see Precious almost smother him. I feel I need to keep a close eye on them.

Sometimes Precious grabs his tail and pulls the tinly thing backward across our wood floors. It is soooo funny.

What a joy they both are. We prayed before getting these pups and I think they are a perfect fit for our family.

FAQs about puppies / 2 Great Pyrenees Puppies/ 5 weeks
« on: November 10, 2007, 06:27:18 am »
Bear with me I'm green. I purchased 2 Great Pyrenees puppies yesterday. I've been up all night. Obviously 5 weeks was too early to leave mom.

The pups were born in a barn and remained there. They were quite dirty and full of fleas and ticks. I gave them baths and cut burs from their hair. I have them inside in large cage. We have 20 acres.

I have several questions can't get to a vet until tomorrow. ???

1. Should I put them on formula? They are eating puppy chow. Do they need more?

2. One is the runt--but he is 1/4 the size of the other. Has anyone seen a runt this small? I'm wondering if he is from another litter? see photo at http://heartofwisdom.com/images/pry_puppies/puppies1.jpg

3. The runt wants to be held or he cries. Is this OK or spoiling?

Thanks,
Robin
