I feel for you and your son...although I agree with what all of the BPO 'experts' have said.
I agree to give this some time to work itself out before rehoming!  Kana bit me while trying to dominate me in play last summer.  I freaked out and actually spent 2 days frightened of my own pup.  I talked to a lot of knowledgeable people (I wish I knew about this site then!)and some had harsh words for me while others were comforting and understanding.  All of the advice is worth thinking about.  Take care!  Good luck!

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Re: Giardia - Montezuma's Revenge
« on: December 28, 2007, 02:20:08 pm »
Kana had what we assume was Giardia a couple of summers ago.  He drank and drank and drank the water of Devil's Lake (against our best attempts to keep him from drinking it!) in Wisconsin.  That night as he was sleeping in our truck cab we heard him actually SCREAMING to be let out!  As soon as we got to him it was a mess.  We thought the worst was over, but our 3 hour ride home was awful!!  He did not eat for several days and just slept as if he was going to die!
Hope your baby is feeling better!  Why are dogs with bandages so cute!!!!!!

Kana's crate is actually in our heated garage and we have been trying very hard to keep him 'warm' this winter by adding padding to the crate floor.  Kana has made his point very clear, as the padding has ended up in the back yard (which he has access to)every single day!  It's silly for us to think that they need help getting comfy, I have learned.  I have to remind myself every day that he is meant for cold and snow and all of the elements out there! We do also leave him some options of pillows, etc if he wants to take them in.
Stick with the bare crate and see if that works for him!  Good Luck!

Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Discussions / Re: Itchy Swissy
« on: December 23, 2007, 01:35:24 pm »
First of all, Louie is adorable!  I love the Swissy's!  Secondly, we have gone through many issues that were skin/allergy things with 2 of our Akitas.  I agree with all of the other posted suggestions and I have 2 words of advice.  Don't leave it all up to the vets!  My last Akita spent her 10 years on this earth miserable for the most part due to vets who were unknowledgable about skin disorders.  We finally saught out a specialist in Akitas (not common in the Midwest!) and have been very happy with his results. We have also used message boards like this to talk to other Akita owners for help.  My other word of advice is don't ignore that this may be a food allergy!  We have done research on grain products in dog food and have recently switched our current Akita (Kana) to an all protein diet.  This has helped with his skin/coat and has assisted with calming his temperment.  Look into that, it's worth a shot!  We use EVO brand.
Good luck!

Thanks for the info...Here's the thing.  He is nutered (has been altered since before we adopted him - so sad since he is of generations of champions!).
Also, the crate is wonderful, he likes it but I find that when we are home, keeping him in the crate is torture!  He yelps as if we are beating him, all attention seeking behaviors!  It also seems that when we take him out he is a pent up ball of even more energy!
I think we are fooling ourselves to think that he is playing while we are gone at work when he has the garage and back yard to himself.  Am I right about this?  I bet he is sleeping all day!!  Maybe we should go back to the crate during the day!

Akita Discussions / When will this adolescence be over???
« on: December 16, 2007, 06:05:14 pm »
???So, we have an akita boy.  He's 2.5 and very much a boy.  He still experiences the zoomies and still has much difficulty with jumping (due to excitement), lunging, tearing (papers/boxes/screens)and bowling over our guests.  We have had him since age 4mo and although he is much better than he used to be, he is still very impolite.
We have done everything!
Obedience classes (passed out of all levels at a top school), "busy" toys, reign of the backyard/garage for exercise, walking, dog parks, trips in the car, visits to our parent's houses, hide and seek with treats in the house, trips to the park, trips to the downtown area, trips to our work, etc...
He is still very much a puppy and often gets what we call "crazy eyes" just before he goes on one of his 'rants'.  He continues to destroy stuff of mine and I am sure it's not out of anger, but attention seeking.
Does anyone have advice for how to get through this? How much longer did your akita's adolescence last???  I know each dog is different, but I have to ask!
Thanks!

I read this same thing in the Chicago Tribune about 3 weeks ago.  Genetic testing to pinpoint the breed of your mix dog!

Akita Discussions / Re: Akitas and off-leash dog parks?
« on: December 16, 2007, 01:47:28 pm »
I have found it incredibly stressful to take our akita boy to a dog park.  When he was a pup we did it regularly (4-5 times a week) and things were always tentative.  He was naturally bigger and rougher than his same age counterparts.  It was more the people at the dog park that we dreaded.  They would react negatively as soon as they saw him ("ahhh...it's an aggressive akita")they would start scooping up their shiz tu's and heading toward the exit.  It was ridiculous.
Now, he is 2/5 years and we will not take him because he has shown some aggression toward my neighbors bulldog.  I think it's just a bad mix (Bulldogs are known for not being tolerant of other dogs).  We are flirting with the idea of getting another dog who can really ruf and tumble with our akita since we think that him growing up as an 'only child' is going to be a disservice in the long run.
It's a tough situation...on e I have been hoping to find a solution to as well!
