General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / I'm a little scared...
« on: March 08, 2008, 03:06:52 pm »
OK, so I have a potential situation that I need some advice on...
My neighbors just got a new dog. We are friendly with them (single mom and 2 kids ages 5 and 3) but I have a concern.  The dog they got is a 10 week young pomeranian and mini yorkie mix.  Ummm...it's about 5 lbs. now and will "grow" to a max of about 10-12 lbs.
Here's my obvious concern...KANA . :o
I am terrified that this little, tiny, miniature, sort-of a dog will be let out either accidentally or intentionally (by the kids who may not know any better) and it will wander into my yard when Kana is outside!!!!!  THIS DOG WILL BE DEAD SO FAST, IT WON'T BE FUNNY!!!!!  Kana will NOT know what it is, will assume it is a rat or something and will most definitely kill it!  My fence is of literally no protection because the tiny thing will be able to easily walk through the slats or go under the fence.
I have brought up my concern with the neighbor and she kinda had a chuckle about it, but as the weather gets nicer and the little dog becomes more comfortable and curious around their house/property...this may become a read problem. I have told both of the kids that under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should "little bear" (the tiny thing's name) EVER BE INTRODUCED TO KANA.  I also don't want them to be fearful of Kana, though.
Any suggestions?????? Can I have them sign a waiver releasing us of any responsibility if "little bear" comes into our yard or does that make us sound like we have knowledge that our dog is "dangerous"???

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Re: HELP! Dog fight

Oh my goodness...wha t a terrible situation.  I am so sorry whenever I hear things like this.  I know there is legislation out there to prevent things like this from happening but I don't have any specific advice for you.  I would just say to get in your city/town hall and investigate all of the requirements for owning a pet and work with your local police (it sounds like you already have) to get this taken care of.  Make sure you ask your vet as well, what your legal rights are.
Again, I guess I am just posting to show my support, I don't have any advice...but you know you will find it here with other BPO owners.
Let us know how it all goes...hope you and your Jake will recover quickly!  :-\

It is hard to wish the snow away when it's such a true & easy form of entertainment for our fur kids!!  Chicago looks like it is going to say goodbye to winter within the next week and I have to say, I am sad.  Kana just adores the snow.
Now it's going to be rain/mud season.  Bleeeccckkk!!!  :P

FAQs about puppies / Re: HELP!!!! My Mastiff Puppy is AGGRESSIVE!!
« on: March 04, 2008, 09:53:42 pm »
Two things that others have mentioned that I have lived by are 1- NILIF and 2- the crate.  I swear, I don't know what I would have done without them during all of Kana's childhood/adolescence!
About the "roll".  I am no expert...BUT, we used a variation of this with our big boy.  He really DID need a physical timeout at times when he got the puppy rage.  It was either him or me at times.  I had to show him not only by the consistent NILIF and show of non-physical dominance that I was most definitely NOT going to be bullied.

I found that not talking to him at all while this was going on was effective.  I simply got him to his belly and with partial weight on him (NOT TO HURT HIM) would force him to be still (ie: submit).  I too, would watch TV while doing this or if we were in the back yard I would just be still and quiet.  Once in that position, he would "settle".  Generally, I would slowly take the weight off and finally give him the "you're free" command.
It is important NOT to do this when you are overly emotional/angry, though.  It then could be taken as meeting his aggression with aggression and that always turns out badly.
Another thing I did which was effective was just leaving the room and leaving Kana by himself (even if it meant sacrificing my couch or bookbag while I was gone).  Much of his biting/attacking was attention seeking-gone-crazy so when I no longer gave him that attention, he quickly got bored and stopped.
I really agree with many of the other options, but just thought I would give my 2 cents!
Take care & good luck!  ;)

I LOVE MAYA!!!!  :-*
A lot of people think that Kana is absolutely NOT an Akita, but "you know, one of those...uhhh sled dogs..."  Yah, no sh#* dumba*&!!!  People think that he is a husky more often than not.  It's okay...hubby and I have an agreement that if people get "know it all" like this we fake that Kana is getting out of control and that he may "snap" at any minute just to see people get jittery!!!  :D
It's okay if people don't know what he is...that's why we got Kana, he was a Japanese Akita vs. a black masked much larger American Akita...

People suck!

I am sort of a skeptic about what people put on the web these days (sorry...).  I would make sure that the gig is real and not a ploy.  Many people do this sort of thing...pull at heartstrings in order to get something for free.  Just beware.  :-\
If it is genuine...that poor soul.  What a predicament to be in.  How helpless she must feel. If she does join BPO, she will find the suport she is looking for, that's for sure!!!!!

This woman needs some serious therapy! :-\
Thanks to your sister for rescuing those pups!  This is a very tragic story.  I agree with everyone else about NEVER letting those animals back to that woman.  Her poor husband...what a kook!  :-\

Little hint for you...You can always put treats (something VERY inticing) in your pocket and rub your fingers so they have the scent to "encourage" positive behavior from Binky.  It's NOT cheating  ;)!
Also, like Lily's post said, practice, practice, practice in places with many distractions!
Good luck!

That is such a special quality!!!  It's something I am certain cannot be taught.  I stand firm by my findings that AAT (animal assisted therapy) is one of the MOST effective and underused therapy out there.  I have worked as a recreational therapist for 10 years and have seen the power of animals with the elderly (even alzhiemer's patients), the physically disabled (even clients with severe brain injury)and most recently clients with a variety of mental disorders and personality disorders.
We currently 'house' a dutch rabbit ("CC"), a black pug ("Bella")and our newest Bullmastiff ("Winston").  All of them have the potential to move perverbial mountains with all of our clients!!!
I say get the testing done.  It will be the most rewarding work you will ever do with your dog!!! ;)

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Re: stinky ears
« on: February 27, 2008, 08:17:51 am »
My friend used to bring his black lab to work and each morning he used to 'wipe' his ears out with these little pads.  Even when there was no infection it was very SMELLY! :P
BUT, I do know that if he didn't clean them every day then in no time the build-up would settle in and cause that ever dreaded infection!  Yuck-o!

Akita Pictures / Re: Butch
« on: February 27, 2008, 08:15:23 am »
My groomer said that she thought he has cattle dog markings. I can see that but I was told on another forum that while a spoted Akita is not common it's not unheard of. I did some research and there is another breed between an Akita and a Sheeba that is a medium size, that it's gaining popularity because so many people dont have room for 120 lb dog but don't want a small dog either.

It really doesn't matter what he is, I still love him. The only reason I wonderd was because I was researching temperment. With an APBT that could have been an issue but it hasn't so far.

On what site did you see about this 'mid-size' Akita?  Just wondering!

Anything Non-Dog Related / Re: Misterious cat accident (more pic added)
« on: February 27, 2008, 07:57:48 am »
Is anyone as stunned as me with the pics?  I cannot believe the dogs were so 'chill' about it!  I guess since I have raging lunatic Kana in the house...my perspective that dogs and other animals can actually co-exist is off!

Congrats on your new little formally dressed cutie!  ;)

Bulldog Discussion & Pictures / Re: Are they all so sweet?
« on: February 26, 2008, 11:42:34 pm »
Most are very sweet with humans. However some can be dog aggressive and some can be rather "determined" when it comes to training and manners.

I agree. My neighbor has an English (named Duke, of course) and he is absolutely the most perfect family dog.  Sweet, kind, funny, tolerant of kids and visitors.

TERRIBLE with other dogs.  That's the only drawback I have seen.
