We are going to try the treat route and see how that works. I just feel hesitant to take her with me places or have people over to the house that she isn't familiar with but I know the only way to correct this is to keep socailizing her. I will keep you updated on how things go.

If anyone has any other ideas we are open to them. Thanks!

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / growling and barking at strangers
« on: April 25, 2008, 07:25:48 am »
So recently our saint Kalli has started to growl and bark anytime a stranger comes near her. I feel like I can't take her anywhere because she won't let anyone she doesn't know get close. They don't even have to be coming towards her they could be just walking by. Well the other day I brought home a friend, this friend has never been to the house before, and Kalli was growling and barking and then she nipped at her. Nothing hard but but she startled my friend. I don't think she would actually bite hard but now I am scared that she will. I don't know how to stop this behavior. She hasn't always been this way and we have done are best to socialize her with people. Another thing I noticed that if the person has a dog with them then she is pefectly fine; I am assuming this is because she loves dogs. Does anyone have idea why she may have started doing this and how to stop it?

I have tried making her sit everytime a stranger is near. If someone is coming up to talk to me I have her sit and I get down at her level and I ask whoever it is to get to her level as well but it doesn't seem to be working she still barks and growls. People are becoming scared of her and its very sad because she is soo sweet to people that she knows. We could really use some help if you have any ideas.

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / chewing problem
« on: April 01, 2008, 01:35:54 pm »
Hey all,

Kalli our almost 9 month old saint bernard has recently starting chewing on things again. She hasn't done this in over 3 months. We are first believed that it was because I had gone back to work and she was use to being alone all day. So we started crating her when we left the house. Well last night while we were sleeping she chewed the cords to our cable box and the remote control. I have heard that they go through a "second puppy stage" when they are a little older and I am not sure if thats what this is or not. My FI thinks we need to start crating her while we are sleep as well but I just hate to do that. Anyone have any ideas about what may be causing this and what can be done to stop/prevent it?

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / a dog bit my mom
« on: January 24, 2008, 04:33:30 pm »
My mom work the Intermediate Unit in Central PA so she has to make lots of house calls. Yesterday she went to see this family and they had a dog chained up outside :( well while she was inside the dog must have broke the chain because we she was getting ready to leave it ran up to her and bit her leg. She didn't think it broke the skin at frist but as she was driving home she realized her leg was bleeding. I advised her to go the ER to have it looked out and to fill out the proper paper work to see if the dog had its vaccinations and rabies shot. Turns out the dog had never been to the vet before so now my mom has to go back and get rabies shots. Some people shouldn't be allowed to have animals!

Kalli use to be terrified of men. Everytime we saw a man she would hide or bark and growl. We assumed that she must have been abused by a male at somepoint. We used to invite lots of my fiance's male friends over just so that we could socialize her with men. We would make her sit when they entered the house and we would stand by her holding her collar just in case she wanted to attack (which she has never done but we just wanted to be careful)and had her sniff the male when he entered and we asked the male to get down low to her size so she was not intimidated. It took a lot of socializing but she deals with men a lot better now, even complete strangers.

Thanks everyone! We are still discussing things but if we decide to try and adopt we will probably do a meeting on neutral ground and see how that goes. Kalli is not aggressive at all. The woman who is fostering the saint we are looking at said that he doesn't normally try to be dominant. I am not exactly sure how to take that maybe I should call her and get more details on the dominance thing. I will let you all know what we decide. Crossing my fingers and hoping we are getting another dog!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / what age is best for new dog
« on: January 18, 2008, 02:50:59 am »
Hey all,

My fiance and I are considering getting Kalli a friend or at least thats the reasoning I used to convince him to think about getting another dog. Kalli is only 7 months old and we were wondering if we should wait till she was older to bring another dog in the house or do it now while she is still young. The dog we are considering is 1.5 yr saint. I thought it would be best to do it while she was young and maybe more open to having another dog in the house. She LOVES other dogs and I think it would be great for her to have another dog in the house. What do you all think?

I don't think it can be stopped unless you have strong will power. I am constantly looking at pig paws that need rescued. I am really set on getting a 1.5 yearold saint that needs a loving home and it they want him to be in a house that has another big dog to play with, well I have just that. I wish there was a way to stop. My fiance keeps telling me no and I keep saying "I won't ask again after this one I promise" we have 2 cats and a dog and I am pushing for at least another dog. However I am trying to convince my fiance into rescueing this saint and I really want a newf. It may never end! I guess I am lucky cause I have someone telling me no. Except he caves pretty easily so the no doesn't always work.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Re: small yards
« on: January 07, 2008, 04:38:39 pm »
Thanks everyone! I am sure my friend will be excited to hear this. Kalli, my saint, does just fine in our small fenced yard with 2 walks a day and I didn't think newfs were much different but I just wanted to check and make sure. I am going to be so jealous if she gets one.. Kalli and I will be over there all the time.  ;)

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / small yards
« on: January 07, 2008, 01:57:42 am »
I have a friend who is considering a newf but she doesn't have the biggest of yards. I was just wondering if they needed to havea big yard if they were walked numerous times a day. They yard is big enough that she could run around a little if she wanted but its not like the acres that I know a lot of big paw owners have. Any feedback would be great!
