I just switched my pyr from Canidae to Evo. He seems to be eating more of it than he did with Canidae...whic h I thought would sort of be the opposite? Anyone else experience this? Bag says about 3-3.5 cups... I top him off at 4..but he is still searching for food and he isn't the type to over eat ??? ??? ??? Not at all what I expected based on others experience with EVO

wow..thanks for taking the time to respond in such detail..I appreciate it. I am feeding a premade raw pattie from a breeder that started making/selling her raw food she has been feeding her danes. It has all the rmb and veggies, meats, suppliments etc that raw diet should have - i am pretty confident in that. My berner is about 42lbs this week at 5months and 1 week old. She doesn't feel skinny so that is good. The main reason I went raw is to allow her to grow in a slow manner given she is a large breed - as well as all the other benefits. I think I will increase her intake up to 3 - 3.5 pounds for awhile and see how she continues to grow. I would rather her to be leaner than too heavey but I also don't want to comprimise any part of her growing!

oh .. and I give her lots of cookies.. cause she is just so cute!

Curious.. my 5 month old berner acts like she is STARVING all the time. I feed raw... three times a day - trying to ween to two times a day.
I am feeding about 1.5 - 2lbs daily...
any suggestings or comments about what others have experienced? Is this not enough?
thanks

Bernese Mountain Dog Discussions / Re: Allergies?
« on: August 19, 2008, 09:49:07 pm »
Always learning new things from all of you! thanks.
As it turns out...I think it might be pink eye. It cleared up on my berner with the use of polysporin but now my pyr has it....same eye...same symptoms. I supose it is a bit of a guess but Marley hasn't had allergies before and a little coincidental that one had something and then the other  ??? ???
I am sort of leaning to a more hollistic type of care for my dogs as I have unfortunelty had some distastful experiences with vets...I will monitor closely and see what comes of Marley's eye. Thanks for all the responses. LOVE THIS SITE!

Bernese Mountain Dog Discussions / Allergies?
« on: August 16, 2008, 04:04:48 pm »
Any one have a berner with allergies? I have read that it isn't a "typical" breed traite...howev er what is "typical" right? I think my little girl is allergic to something outside...gras s, ragweed..?? when I bring her in from her nightly play time (where she plays in the yard not her pen) her left eye is sometimes really red, half closed and she is always trying to paw at it... anyone else ever experience this? Not necessarily breed specific - I am trying to diagnose what could be the cause.

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Re: Pyr kisses
« on: August 10, 2008, 09:13:59 am »
Marley kisses all the time.. just with his nose. I love it...not so fond of the licking. I am hoping to teach my berner to kiss with her nose - not so successful so far! lol. Yes Pyr nose nudging is a magical thing! Sometimes he will just walk around the house and each time he passes by he will come and kiss my nose and keep going. It is really cute!

Is your puppy out of control with energy??? :o
Never had a puppy puppy (under 9 months) so I don't know if this is a puppy thing, a breed thing or an individual trait(hope not) but my berner puppy has the tempermant right now of a golden!! yikes. Will she calm down? LOL

Medical Conditions & Diseases / 4 days of diarrea
« on: August 04, 2008, 05:20:47 pm »
Marley has had diarrea for about 4 days now. He hasn't changed his behaviour at all - but the loose stool just pours out ( sorry to be graphic). I have him on boiled rice and hamburger as I read that is what usually clears it up however it doesn't seem to be helping? any other ideas or should I be taking him into the vet?

Can eating mini frogs harm a dog? While I am not fond of this little habit she has I am more concerned about health effects? I try and correct her when I catch her and have tried to get her to drop it...not my luck.
anyone else have this problem??

Thanks everyone! glad to hear...sort of :-\ LOL
I have all the brushes mentioned - rake, pin, slicket, furminator and shedding tool. I use them all regularily. Guess I will have this times two when my Berner grows up!! good thing I love doing it!

I too have a 14 week old berner pup! we should compare notes!! I am interested in how often you bath yours? Mine still has the full fuzzy fur but she is starting to shed quite a bit!

WOW how much fur sheds out of your pyr's? Marley didn't shed this much last year...I can literally pull chunks out of him and I brush him every other day... could something else be wrong?

Food Discussion & Information / Re: raw food diet....and kibble?
« on: July 12, 2008, 09:35:22 am »
switched to all raw when we ran out of kibble.
Have you tried turkey necks instead of chicken for your RMB?
What other nutrients are you adding? ie Kelp, alfalfa, ginger, Vitamins, oils, supplements
Do you have access to Venison or Bison to add variety later?
How long have you been feeding raw?
What did you start with?
Try a different type of fish. Is it canned or fresh?
Is the chicken free range or commercial? sometimes they taste different to dogs.

Hi
I haven't tried turkey necks yet but keep reading it is a good choice. Just have to find them.
I have just started (one week) feeding raw. I have been feeding beef mostly - hamburger, beef cubes, steaks
I have been successful with canned sardines so far.
I am still figuring out how much to feed and how to incorporate the other nutrience especially for my picky eater!! :)

Food Discussion & Information / raw food diet....and kibble?
« on: July 11, 2008, 07:21:43 pm »
Hey
I am slowly incorporating raw food into my dogs diet. I have one really picky eater though and will only eat beef. NO Veggies and hardly any chicken or fish? is it ok to still feed half kibble to gain some of the other ingredients at the same time I feed raw?
Advice please....
