Medical Conditions & Diseases / Re: Shaking Front Legs
« on: February 11, 2008, 04:06:13 am »
No x-rays yet...our Vet didn't seem to think he needed them at this point.  How old was your Newfie when it started having problems and when you found out about the skeletal issue?

His front legs really only shake when he is sitting or laying down relaxing.  I can pet him and he is happy as can be, but they still shake.  He never has issues getting up from the laying or sitting position.  It happens at all times of the day.  It probably is growing pains, since he is still growing quite a bit.  Maybe I am just being paranoid...I've just never had a dog whose legs shake like Cooper's.

SO, I wanted to get advice from the knowledgable people on this site about Cooper consistent issue.  Since he was about 10 weeks old, we have noticed that his front legs shake from time to time.  We asked our vet about it and he said that he had no lameness in his joints, so it was probably just growing pains or him being nervous.  In the past month, his shaking has been happening a little more often.  When I touch his front legs and joints, he acts fine, it doesn't hurt him at all.  He only shakes when he is sitting/laying down/standing still (never while playing and running around).  Anyone have any similiar experiences or idea if this is just growing pains...or could it be Pano?

We are in the same situation as you, we really need to replace our kitchen floor and some of the carpet in our upstairs soon.  I have heard that laminate flooring is the best for high traffic areas and it usually have a pretty good warranty on it as well.  Also, lighter hardwoods would show less scratches and as long as it is sealed on a regular basis, it should last a long time.

By the way, I love the pic of Clifford at the park!  What a great look!!!! :D

I have had the same issue with my 4 1/2 month old Bernese.  We have tried special organic pills (potty mouth), that didn't work.  Also tried the pineapple juice in the food (that upset his stomach).  So far, we have found the best thing is to pick up his poop right after he goes.  Our vet told us that we were lucky...Cooper only eats his own poop and could care less about others.  Another remedy to try would be tabasco sauce on the poops outside.

That is so exciting that you got to see a pair of berners on your trip.  Cooper is already starting to lose his puppy fur and his back is starting to get all curly.  I had never seen a berner with a curly back before.  Is Sammy's staying curly the longer it gets?

Just something to think about - waiting until your puppy is grown prior to neutering.  It seems that most vets are still recommending spaying and neutering before the dogs bone growth plates are closed despite the current research. This is especially relevant in large and giant breeds.  You can find some additional information by searching this forum.  I still lay awake at night regretting the fact that we had Cirra spayed at eight months and she ended up with an cruciate injury.  We were not aware of the correlation until she hurt her knee.  The vet did not inform us about the risks of spaying despite asking numerous times.  There are pros and cons to everything however I support people making informed choices and I know we did not have all the information.

That is something that I have never heard about before, but I will now definitely research it!  Did you have Cirra spayed in BH or do your go up to Brewer?

And the belly bump is smaller today (size of a dime) and is much softer.  I guess I kind of jumped the gun on getting all worried about it.  But I would never forgive myself is it had been something really bad and I had put it off...after all, he is my little(big) baby!  ;)

My 4 1/2 month old bernese does the same thing.  He eats it so fast, you'd think we were starving him!  We have started feeding him his food at meal time in small ammounts (it has helped to a point).  I have heard about those special bowls that slow down their eating, but I have not be able to find one that fits in our raised feeder yet.

Peanut butter with small puppy treats or baby carrots cut in half are the favorites at our house.  The only thing is we can't even get out the jar of peanut butter without Cooper going crazy thinking it is for him!

Called the vet today...by my description, he thinks Cooper has another hernia of some sort.  He didn't seem too worried and said as long as it didn't bother him or suddenly grow a lot, then it can wait until to be looked at when he gets neutered at the end of March.  Phew....I feel a bit better about it now.

Ok...here I go again.  Sorry to be such a worrywart about things, but I recently (2 days ago) was giving Cooper a belly rub and noticed a hard lump on his stomach.  He "had" an umbilical hernia, but that has been gone for about a week now.  This new lump is lower on his stomach, harder, and about the size of a marble.  Cooper is not sensitive to the touch of it.  He is still acting fine, eating a ton (he loves his new organic food!), running around outside like a nut, and is finally understanding that the lawn and woods are his bathroom!  ;)  Anyone have any idea what this could be?

Bear has the most beautiful markings.  He is such a cute little guy!  Does he enjoy the baths?
