Good news...Cooper has been a happy healthy puppy ever since we switched his food over.  I am still not sure if it was the Potty Mouth pills or his prior food, or even both.  He has rapidly starting growing in size again, phew.  Thank you all for answering my questions and support!   :D

Today has so far been a good day.  We ended up switching Cooper's food from purena pro plan to an organic lamb and rice food.  He loves it and has been able to keep everything down so far on it.  I went into the vet today with his stool sample and the test results came back negative for worms...they also said that as long as he is still not vomiting, that he can wait until this appointment on thursday.

SO yesterday morning, Cooper ate this Brat diet (rice and chicken) for the second time and then got sick.  The vet was able to squeeze us in mid-morning.  Before we ended up going to the vet, we stopped by my parent's house and Cooper turned back into his usual normal self, playing non stop with my parent's dog, Adie.  At the vet, he again acted normal.  He had a slight temperature, but nothing to be worried about.  The vet checked him out and decided not to do blood work or Xrays on him, since he acted fine, his checked reflected a healthy puppy, and was still eating and pooping.  The only suggestion she had was to give him half a Pepcid AC tablet with his food twice a day.  Last night he was fine, just slept a little more than usual (typical after a vet visit...he gets a bit stressed there).

Then this morning we got up and fed him half of his normal kibble with a little rice and pepcid (recommend by the vet).  And yet again, he got sick this morning.  20 minutes later, we were outside on poop patrol and he was running around like a nut, playing with us and tossing around sticks.    The vet suggested bringing in a sample of his stool to double check for worms (even though he has already been dewormed and had his stool checked before).  They mentioned before that if things didn't clear up, then he should have blood work done and probably Xrays as well.  :(

I apologize for ranting on like this, but I feel like I am at a loss on what is wrong with him.  Has anyone else had anything similar like this happen to their dog?

I have actually had this happen to myself before.  9 years ago (during the summer), we had to board our cats at a kennel for a month.  Somehow, my two cats jumped out an open window on the 2nd floor of the kennel (it was their night to be outside their cage and get come exercise in the cat room).  The next morning one of the cats was right outside the kennel, while the other was missing.  We searched the woods night and day for weeks.  We saw him once at night, but he got scared and bolted.  We attempted raccoon traps with wet cat food in them, only to catch raccoons and neighbors cats.  A month later we received a phone call from a person who lived near by the kennel.  She had seen our cat out on her back deck eating from her dog's food dish.  The next day he was back at home with us only with a scratch on his nose and fleas.

Anyways...sorr y for the long story, but they should keep trying anything they can think of.  I highly suggest the raccoon trap with food in it (even though it didn't work for us, I have heard that it is highly effective) and leaving food outside the house.  I hope the kitty makes it home safe and sound soon.

Thank you so much!  Once we finally find out why his tummy is so sick, I'll post it.

Bernese Mountain Dog Discussions / Teething
« on: January 17, 2008, 12:34:17 pm »
At what age does a berner usually start teething?  Cooper just lost his first tooth yesterday (exactly 4 months old).  I thought it was a little early for his to be loosing his sharp little puppy teeth.

Just got off the phone with the vet...they told me to switch him over immediately to a chicken and rice diet and if he is still vomiting tomorrow that he should come into the vet to be checked out.  :(  I'm hoping this chicken/rice diet works, I feel so bad for my little guy right now.

Ok...unfortuna tely, we are going on day 6 of vomiting.  He did great all day yesterday until the evening.  It was then followed by 4am, and most recently just in the car 30 minutes ago.  I'm planning on calling the vet as soon as they open this morning.  He is still drinking and eating regularly with no issues and gives no warnings before he vomits (which is weird, because he is typically a whiner).  I am hoping the vet tells me it is fine and that he can wait until his scheduled appointment on the 24th, but I am really starting to get worried.  :(

So far, so good this morning, I left the happy little guy in his room (yes, no crate, we give him his own room...this might be part of the problem, but I just couldn't crate him).  He was sitting on his bed, playing with his toys watching animal planet...oh, the life!

Seaherons: Yes (well technically Trenton now)  Cooper comes and plays with Adie in BH all the time (he is now bigger than her too!)  Hopefully Cooper can meet Cirra sometime soon. :)

Never heard of the pineapple theory...only beef tenderizer, tabasco, etc.  Hmmm, might be something new to try.

I noticed my bernese puppy's umbilical hernia pretty much exactly how you did.  The vet missed it the first time he went in, but checked everything out the next time.  He said that it can be corrected when he is neutered if it still exists.  Did you end up having this done?

Thank you both for quick replies!  His stools are still normal, and his water and food intake is the same as well.  I have attempted picking up all his feces outside, however, we have tons of snow and he seems to be able to find hidden stools in it!  I am probably just worrying over something very simple, but he is my first dog and I am a bit over protective and get worried over anything he does that is abnormal.

My very happy and energetic Bernese puppy has been throwing up once a day for the past 4 days.  He has been eating his feces and we started giving him pills (recommend by our Vet), called Potty Mouth.  It has been about 2 weeks now with the pills and he still eats his feces.  I am thinking that his vomiting has something to do with these pills (we are stopping with the pills today to see as well).  He is pretty mellow right after vomiting, but a short time later he is his regular old self.  Has anyone else had a puppy/dog with the same issue?  My puppy, Cooper, is going to the vet on the 24th, can he wait, or should I take him ASAP???  Any info would be appreciated!
