Great Pyrenees Discussions / Re: Do you brush your dogs teeth?
« on: March 12, 2008, 10:22:37 pm »
We brush our danes teeth several times a week.  Doing it since they were puppies.  They get a treat at the end, a dentabone!  :D

Hi! The only thing I would add is that I would not let her have free run of the house until she's housebroken.  Confining to a washable floor room like the kitchen is good.  Consistent taking out right after eating, napping, playing, first thing in AM and last thing before bedtime is essential.  Catching her going outside and the TONS of praise will have her catch on.  She's a smart breed.  Tethering her to you in the house is a good trick too.  You have to be the Housebreaking Hag for about a week and then you'rre home free!

So sorry !  The worst thing about having pets is losing them.  We all feel your pain as we recall our own losses!  :'(

Hi Mojo!  We picked Calhoun since we live in Kentucky!  His breeder had a Calhoun in the past too!  :D  His AKC name is Colonel Calhoun of Oakwoods!  :D
We wanted another "sound" too.  We had Abbie, the "b" sound, Luke, the hard "k" sound and wanted something different.  When you call a dog, similar sounds are confusing.  We're on 5 acres here!  They're called A LOT!  :D

Great Dane Discussions / Re: Arthritis?
« on: March 09, 2008, 10:48:15 am »
One of our Rainbow danes had arthritis.  He was afflicted at about 8 years old.  We treated him with a minimal dose of predisone.  He suffered from allergies and the pred did double duty!   Samson was gradually rendered unable to move about much.  He spent his last days in the living room (no stairs).  We carried him outside everyday so he could lay on the lawn and enjoy visitors from the neighborhood! Sam passed away short of 11 years.  A wonderful merle mantle!  Our Calhoun is very much like him too!  It's WONDERFUL to see that merle face again!!  ;)

Thanks, everybody!  The puppers are the "kids" now!  :D  Calhoun, our merle, is a handsome boy!  He has great dogs behind him too.  Our fawn Luke is from champion stock as well!  Our Abbie is a byb girl who is just perfect in every way!
Definitely fun dogs!
