My Timber takes his CGC on August 9th. We went to class tonight and WOO HOO it was tough! There were 12 dogs there and our trainer had us line up our dogs a foot apart in a down stay and we had to take turns walking over each of them. Like Hopscotch kind of! So not only did your dog have 12 people walk over it, it had to stay as you left it to walk over the other 11 dogs! Then they did a sit stay and we walked in a weave pattern...Then ...  drumroll... you had to walk your dog over each of the other dogs! Talk about socialization! Check out the pic below to give you some idea of what we were dong... This is the sit stay right before we started the weaving... My guy is the 3rd from the camera staring intently at me like "mom, where are you going?"

So, I have found a newfoundland breeder that I really like, and the momma is prego and was due on Sunday... so we are on puppy watch! I'm so excited! Lots of prayers for her that all goes well and that one of her pups is meant to come live with me! 10 weeks and counting...

Dahlie Juju - you said..."I also tend to relate things to my own experience and go off on tons of tangents. Personally, I think most tangents are funny and silly or have an (eventual) point to them...even if I can't remember it until much later. :) "

Ditto! if it wasn't for tangents - I don't think I would know how to talk! I swear the next BPO'er who gets a new dog has to name it Tangent!  :D

By the way, how do you add someone's quote from a previous post without copying and pasting? Well, lookie there.. another tangent!

Mixed Breed Pictures / Re: Wanna play Guess the breed?

Man this is fun!!!! Yea, I will post pics as they grow up and we can see who was the closest at playing the "guess the breed game"!  I do get to claim the kids though.. they are mine.  Thanks for the compliments. I think I'll keep them :) I had a hard time getting them out of there, they wanted to take them all home (of course so did I!) My friend is concerned, when she lists them on Petfinder she has no clue what to put as a breed! I told her it was like Forrest Gump and his box of chocolates - you never know what your going to get. Maybe we should name them all chocolate names... Godiva, Hershey, Dove, ... help. I need 1 more female and a male chocolate name! (4 females and 1 male total)

Mixed Breed Pictures / Wanna play Guess the breed?

So a fellow rescue friend of mine pulled a VERY pregnant momma from a kill pound. She had her pups a day later. She looks like a beagle mix. Small, about 20 pounds. You can see her with my son in the first picture. I also attached some pics of the pups close up for your review! They are 17 days old in these pics. What the heck!? One of them looks like a saint bernard!!!! She has 2 black and white, 2 brown and white, and one pure black. Compared to her they are huge!!!! Any thoughtS?

I'm new here so I have wondered the same thing about my posts! But I can say- I love your posts!!! I think dog lovers are notoriously talkers! Lord knows I am one...Hence the reason we are all on here every day!!! I've been overwhelmed at how nice and helpful everyone is. I think we should all buy every house in a community and move next to each other! I'd be there...as long as we all do it near a beach!

I asked teh question but forgot to answer... losing my mind.
Meli's registered name is Meli Kamahine (honey girl in Hawaiian) and she was born in Hawaii and raised there till the age of 2 when we brought her back with us. Ex was military and we lived there 3 years. Cats were subsequently named Hawaiian names...  Maui (the island) and Maea (means unpleasant odor.. she has some gas issues!) Kids wanted to name her stinky butt, and that was the closet I could find in Hawaiian. Timber came next and my daughter named him. We were told he was part newf and my daughter thought it would be funny to yell "TIMBER" as the big guy laid down! It stuck. But now its funny since he only grew to 70 pounds!  :)

Just a fun topic because I'm always curious...

How did you pick a name for your dog?

Thanks for the encouragement. I spent an hour and a half on the phone with a breeder today... :) I had a ton of questions and he did for me as well. Actually made me feel better that he turns down quite a few people. He's very particular who he let's buy his babies. He's gonna call some references, but so far - so good! Pups are due any day! Yea!!!

I had the same issue with my pup and my 2 cats. He thought they were the nest toys in the world and chased them at high speeds every time he caught a glimpse. The ended up spending weeks under the bed. At one point they peed on the couch when they couldnt get to the litter box without passing him! What we did was begin to give the pup treats while bringing the cats closer and closer. He was so focused on the treats that he started to ignore them and focus on me instead, With time, they lost their appeal. The mere sight of them before would send him in to a frenzy, but once the treats were introduced he would be able to handle them in the room, then even next to him. Now - they can sleep together on the couch! Maybe teaching them to leave the old guy alone is the safest option? Just a thought...

To pup or not to pup? That is the question. Yea, I thought that one over for quite a while. Here is the thing.. both of my dogs do therapy work and I want my newf to be trained as a therapy dog as well. That being said, I would like to get a puppy so I can train it from day one. Socialization is key with therapy dogs and with a rescue you never know what background the dog has. (Although you can usually guess since they are grown and their temperment is set...)  but that being said - the biggest reason for a pup is that my 1 year old newf mix is not very accepting of other grown dogs in the house. We have fostered numerous dogs and he just isn't happy and refuses to bond with them. On occasion he will block their food bowl and growl. Even my friends newf that lived with us. He was very mellow and never challenged my dog for dominance, but my dog wouldnt play with him. He loved the pup boxer though! They were the best of friends. Poor Mr. newf would bark and whine to play and my guy would look at him and then run off with the pup. He is very accepting of puppies. I am hoping that bringing a puppy home will allow him to bond with it and they can grow up together. Of course I know that means lots of accidents and chewed up shoes, but hey - its all part of the fun! I have 2 kids too and they really want to watch it grow as well... so, I figured a pup it is! by the way, I attached a pic of the 4 beasts waiting to get in the house...this is my 2 and my friends 2 that lived with us.

Newfoundland Pictures / I cant take it! I need a newf!
« on: July 22, 2008, 07:52:35 am »
So, after the long drama of waiting and praying and wondering about getting a 3rd dog... my friend moved in with me for a month in between homes. With her came her 3 month old boxer and 3 year old newf. I am in love. They moved out 2 weeks ago and I miss his big hairy drooling self. So, Ive decided I have to have one. Ive wanted one forever, but was worried about bringing in a 3rd dog with my 10 year old and 1 year old. Figured the 10 year old couldn't handle it. Well, after now having 4 dogs living here - it wasn't bad at all. My 1 year old played with the others and the 10 year old got come peace! So, I'm now on the search for a breeder. There are SO many out there. What should I look for? Any suggestions of great breeders? Ive always done rescue, so never had to go the breeder route, but I really want a puppy so I am gonna try a breeder this time. Help!
