Group Discussions & Photos / PHEW, were back in one piece.
« on: January 05, 2009, 01:33:09 pm »
First, let me say HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE!!
Our trip to Louisiana was quite eventful.  Gunner did get car sick on the way there.  He puked IN my purse, not on it, IN it!!!   Thank goodness it wasnt one of my good purses.
He did great meeting new people and other dogs and my cousins horses and the rabbit.
We tried letting him off leash to see how he would do and he came back everytime we called him.  He would run ahead then look back to see if we were still there.  I wish we had land for them to run on,  they looked so happy to be running loose.
They did get out of the fence at my MIL's on Christmas day and KIra attacked the neighbors cat and it hasnt been seen since.  They then proceeded to make thier way to a pasture and chase cows.  That was fun getting Kira to stop chasing them.  Gunner would come when called but then he saw how much fun Kira was having and rejoined her ::)
The pasture and cow owner just stood on his porch and laughed at us.   I was not at all amused!
the trip back was much better for Gunner, no puking this time.
Im glad to be back in my own home, in my own bed and so are the pups.  The minute we walked through the door they were on thier backs rolling all over the place.

Transporting & Traveling With Dogs / Any of your pups get car sick?
« on: December 22, 2008, 01:18:31 pm »
If so what do you give them to help control that on long road trips?
We have an 8 hour drive ahead of us on xmas eve and the longest trip Gunner has ever taken was 45 minutes and he got sick.
I saw something from ark naturals for motion sickness,  just wondering if it really works.
I heard that benadryl works really well too.  Any advice is appreciated cause I dont do dog (or kid) puke well at all.

This has not been my week at all!!   Not sure if I ever mentioned my friend Barb,  she is my neighbor that likes to spoil my pups and kids.
Well,  she passed unexpectedly last week.  She layed down for a nap and never woke up.  She had some health issues but nothing life threatning.
I cant believe that is actually gone.  She leaves behind her hubby and 16 year old son and a house full of spoiled labs.
Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers.

My 7 year old has been sick with unexplained fevers since sat.  The only way to break the fevers is to rotate tylenol and motrin and dunk her in cool baths. Then last night she breaks out in hives all over her body.
Today the doctor(this is the second visit since Mon) gives her benadryl and prednisone but still no diagnosis or explanation!

ANd Kira has a lump over her right eye the size of a golf ball!   The vet doesnt think it's much to worry about,  cant find any external abrasion or puncture wounds and she said it doesnt feel like an abcess.  It doesnt seem to bother Kira either.
She has her on anti-inflammitories(novox) and wants me to watch her to see if it gets any bigger then we have to bring her back in.

Not too mention my hubby HATES the chi puppy and I think she might feel the same towards him.  he wants me to find her a new home and the girls are freaking out and I dont agree with him at all.   She is a puppy and needs training and that sometimes takes time.
The subject of finding her a new home has started serveral fights between he and I.
I dont know what I am going to do,  he is set on getting rid of her.

Im exhausted and feeling slightly depressed.  I need a break from the madness before I crack!

I will be having for dinner??

GUMBO, cajun gumbo, not some soupy northern version with tomatoes in it..blech.

I called my hubby at work and asked him to make some for dinner.
However, it looks like we will be having dinner guests as well.  # of the guys in his cubicle heard him say he will cook gumbo and they said they would buy the meat if he would just cook it....lol!
He makes his own roux which is why it tastes so darn good!!!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / NDR: kinda fun

YOUR AGE BY EATING OUT

Don't tell me your age; you probably would tell a falsehood anyway-but yourwaiter may know!

YOUR AGE BY DINER & RESTAURANT MATH

This is pretty neat  It takes less than a minute. Work this out as you read . This is not one ofthose waste of time things(well, maybe it is), it's fun.

1. First of all, pick the number of times a week that you would like to goout to eat.  (more than once but less than 10)

2. Multiply this number by 2 (just to be bold)

3. Add 5

4. Multiply it by 50 (get the calculator out)

5. If you have already had your birthday this year add 1758...  Or if you haven't, add 1757.

6. Now subtract the four digit year that you were born.

You should have a three digit number
The first digit of this was your original number. (I..e., How many times youwant to go out to restaurants in a week.)   The next two numbers are    YOUR AGE !
------ (Oh YES, it is!)
THIS IS THE ONLY YEAR (2008) IT WILL EVER WORK, SO SPREAD IT AROUND WHILE ITLASTS

Live every day as if it is your LAST !  ______________ ______________ ____

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Supplements question?
« on: November 23, 2008, 04:17:01 am »
I know we had a post about this sometime ago, but I cant find it.
I have been buying canine specific joint supps and oils and paying the jacked up prices too.
I was picking up some glucosamine for my elderly neighbor when I remembered that post(yes, I think of you guys when away from the puter too..lol!).

What supplements do you give your pets that you buy in the vitamin stores?  can our pups be given our probiotics?

Not the greatest shots...she doesnt sit still for very long.
She did great last night.  She slept in her crate ON Tyler's bed.   As long as she can see her she is ok.
In a matter of 24 hours she knows who her "momma" is.
She will sit with us and let us hold her but if Ty gets up, she jumps off and follows her.  we can get up and leave and if Ty is holding her she will just watch us leave.
She is full of personality too.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / NBPOR: Im grandma to a Chi girl!
« on: November 19, 2008, 03:11:36 pm »
We welcomed a blonde chihuahua into the family tonight.  She is a deer chi, I did not know that there was such a thing and now I know why.  She is all legs and ears!!
Kira is tolerating her pretty well.  Gunner stares at her and sticks his nose up her rear.
At one point she was walking on her 2 front legs because his nose was under her back legs.
He tries to play but he is too excited.
In a few days I know they will all settle in once they are all adjusted.
She is very playful and loves the kids.
As soon as I can get her too sit still long enough I will take some pic's and post them.

We are trying to decide on a name,  they were calling her baby girl....but she doesnt answer to it at all.
So far we have come up with Millie and Cami.

Akita Discussions / Black spots appearing on the underbelly skin.
« on: November 19, 2008, 02:54:59 pm »
I noticed tonight that Kira has some black spots on her skin on her underbelly and I dont ever remember her having that there.
They arent small either, not mole like more like patches.
Anyone else's pups ever experience this?

Bullmastiff Discussions & Pictures / Gunner's friend Jack
« on: November 17, 2008, 12:38:29 pm »
My daughters best friend has a chorkie puppy that comes over for visits quite often and Gunner is obssessed with Jack.
It is so funny to watch him lick him because he rolls him over with his tongue.
The play is very supervised as one of Gunner's paws is bigger than Jack's upper torso.

On another note,  we may be adopting a 5 mos old chi pup on Wed.
One of the subs in my daughter's school has fallen on hard times and has to get a 3rd job and doesnt have time for the pup or the $$ for the upkeep and asked Tyler if she wanted her.
We will meet her and see how she reacts to us and Gunner and Kira.
I am a bit worried about having such a small dog with Kira.
We tried a month or so ago to bring in a great dane and she tried to tear him up.  But that is typical Kira,  she picks and chooses the dogs she will socialize with.  For example, jack the chorkie doesnt even get a second glance once she sniffs him over.
So, wish us luck on Wed.  The girls have been wanting a small dog for so long.
Before long my hubby says the humans will be outnumbered by the dogs.  I told him that's my kind of family, I got a dirty look...lol!

Something is wrong with Kira.   My son woke me up this morning and said that Kira was acting funny.
Her ears are spread apart (this is how I know she is in pain) and she kept her right eye closed.
When I went to touch her head,  she flinched like I was going to hit her.
She let me touch her ears but not the side of her face and right below her jaw I can feel some enlarged lymph nodes.
I finally got her to open her eye and it's blood red in the part that should be white.  She also tilts her head to the left and kinda walks sideways and slow and if we come near the right side of her head, she turns it as to guard it.
She has had eye infections in that eye before and it has always leaked a bit due to her allergies.
She looks so pitiful and I can hardly keep my make-up on for work because I cant stop crying.  I hate it when my babies are sick!!
We have an appointment at 9:15 this morning.  Please keep her in you thoughts, prayers and  well wishes.

***UPDATE******

It's a pretty bad eye infection.  She tried to bite the vet when they put those drops in her eye to see if there were any scratches.  She bit the lamp they used after they got the drops in.
She has NEVER in her 7 years behaved this way,  not even when she bloated!!
The vet and (most of) her staff are just awesome and didnt hold it against her.
Her Lymph nodes are swollen on that side and the head tilt she has going on,  Dr. V said it may eleveate the pressure on the eye and that's why she is tilting it to the left.
They gave her oral antibiotics,  and eyedrops that have antibiotics and steroids and some pain meds.
We have to do this for 5 days then go back to make sure it's going away.
There were no scratches on her cornea.  I asked if they had any ideas on how it got infected and was told it could be anything from her and gunner playing to her usual allergies that just escalated into a serious infection because it was left untreated (new vet intern said this and made me feel lower than low for not catching it sooner)
She let me put t he drops in her eye when we got home but kept on spiting our her pain meds.
I swear half a  jar of peanut butter and some turkey cold cuts later, I finally got her to keep it down!
