Treatment & Preventative Meds / Question about heartworm meds and weight?
« on: October 28, 2008, 02:57:40 pm »
Every month I take Gunner in to the vet for a weigh in for her HW meds.
I was told to do this until his weight has leveled out.  I dont pay an office visit, we just go in, weigh and buy a pill.
What did/do you guys do?

Old English Mastiff Pictures / New pictures of Gunner
« on: October 27, 2008, 04:30:10 pm »
I dont think I have posted any of him since he was 5 mos old.
He will be 9 mos old on the 14th of Nov. at his weigh in 3 weeks ago he weighed 95lbs and as you can tell he is rather lean.  Cant really feel or see bones.
In the full body pic he looks bullmastiffish but in the others he looks like  a great dane to me.
I was asked at  the vets office if he was an undocked boerboel because of his light mask,  which gets lighter as he gets older.
He is attached to my hip when I am home.  I lurve him so much, even when he is being at total PITA!

modified to add that I cant add the full body pic for some reason :-\

Holiday Things / OH Geez, only 59 days till....................
« on: October 27, 2008, 08:02:42 am »
CHRISTMAS!!!!!  I cant believe how little time that is.
I am excited and cant wait to be able to put up my tree!!!!
I put mine up on Thanksgiving night,  it's a family tradition from my childhood that my great grandparents started.
Every year we buy a new ornament for each family member and we get to hang the new one first that night.
Kinda corny but our tradition.
When do you put up your tree and what traditions do your families practice??
Also,  this is Gunner's first xmas and I think that anything that resembles a ball will have to be put up high.

Discussions & Information on Grooming / waterless shampoos?
« on: October 27, 2008, 07:33:46 am »
Anyone use these instead of water baths during the cold months??
I received a 8oz bottle of this stuff when I purchased my furminator.  I havent used it yet,  it would take the WHOLE bottle to groom Kira.
As a refresher it may work for her.
Gunner hates the groomer.  I tried to have him groomed yesterday and he about went through the glass when I tried to leave and he wouldnt stay on the table.
The girl (who isnt my/Kira's regular groomer) said she was too afraid he would hurt himself so she refused to do him adn I was too afraid after seeing him freak out to have someone else try.
Now he is great at home in the shower,  doesnt say peep,  just sits till I tell him otherwise.
I just cant dry him well(he hates the blow dryer) and I dont want him to get cold.
In the summer he would run outside and lay in the sun on the concrete and dry that way but it's too chilly now for that.
IF anyone has any suggestions or recommendation s, I am completely open.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Update on Gunner.
« on: September 15, 2008, 02:25:57 am »
Well, my boy is doing better.  Last night was his first day back on wolfking and his poops are about 90% normal again.  Let's hope they stay that way too.
He did a counter surfing and bread recon for Kira last night.
I baked 6 loves of bread for us and a friend and the little monster took the only Pina colada bread that I made and ate more than half of it and when I caught him he dropped what he had in his mouth infront of Kira and she scarffed  it up(she is on a diet, cant have the junk food treats and she was not waiting to see if it was ok that she eat, like she usually does).

I took him to the vet on friday for his monthly weigh in for his heartworm meds and he weighs 85 lbs. I asked if his weight was a little on the low side and the vet reminded me that he is half bullmastiff and that they dont weigh as much or get as tall as the OE's.
He is 7 mos old and full of spit and vinegar lately.  He has gotten a little bossy and pushy so I think it may be time for neutering. He isnt aggressive with other dogs, doesnt growl or bark,  just a bit assertive. Except with kira of course,  she would whoop his boo-tay if he tried.  He bulldozes everything in his way too.  Has destroyed every toy I have bought him and some that didnt belong to him.  He is still a big lovebug when he isnt into mischief.  He was bugging the birds the other day and Peanut Butter, the devil cockateil, bit him on the nose!  He hasnt been back to thier cage since...lol!

I got home from work today and as soon as I walked in I knew something was wrong.   The stench was HORRIBLE!
He had the runs in his crate and of course he couldnt sit on the opposite side of the cage,  he had to walk all over in it, sit in it.  When he saw me he stood up and started shaking, then I had poo all over the wall and floor.  I had to let him out and of course he ran right to the carpet and started doing donuts on the light beige carpet.    He ended up getting a bath outside in the rain!
I tell ya,  we were a sight to see.  Me in my work clothes, I have long hair and I was drenched from the rain and Gunner, being his goofy self thought we were playing even though I was cursing and fussing while getting tangled in the hose trying to spray him off.
All I can say is thank goodness for oust air and surface spray,  Hoover steam cleaners and bleach.

Now for the help part:
what can I or should I feed him?  I think I know what the issue is.  He was getting SG wolf king and was running low and petco was out completely.  So my husband(who NEVER gets the dog's food) picked up a bag of NB ultra premium formula.
I didnt think much about it because he had enough WK for a transition of at least 3-4 days.  BOY WAS I WRONG.  He had cow patties for 2 days and then today this.
Petco is still out,  what do I do??  Kira has never had this problem before.  I need some serious help here.

I received this email today even though I haven't fed Timberwolf in a LONG time.(almost 2 years)
I wonder what it means. I smell BS, does anyone else?

"Dear Valued Timberwolf Customers,

During the course of the past few months, Timberwolf Organics, Inc has gone through a re-evaluation process with our production facility, ingredient suppliers and all other facets of our business and have started a ‘Back to Basics’ campaign. We feel that we have strayed from our goal of providing the highest quality pet food available. We have rededicated ourselves and will honor this commitment to our loyal customers.

The most important change we have implemented is our transition to Triple T Foods and CJ Foods. Both are former and current producers of many name brand pet products. We have partnered with both in order to bring our customers the most consistent and high quality pet food we have ever made and to ensure adherence to our formulas. The changes Timberwolf Organics, Inc. has made are designed to regain our position as the leader of the Ultra-premium pet food category. In addition to changing our production to Triple T and CJ Foods, we have changed ingredient suppliers to provide us with the highest quality and freshest ingredients that Timberwolf customers demand.

As many of you are aware of, commodity prices have increased to record levels in the past year. These increases have affected every area of the manufacturing process from the cost of raw materials, price of transportation and even the price of the bags the food is packaged in. For example corn and soybeans prices have risen to all time highs. While, we at Timberwolf, do not use corn directly in our products, corn and soybeans are the primary feed for chickens and other animals we use in our formulas. These higher feed costs have driven the cost of our meats and meals up significantly in the past year. These extreme changes in ingredient pricing have affected Timberwolf just it has it has affected everyone else. We refuse to compromise on the quality of our ingredients though some other companies claim to use ingredients such as ‘roasted venison’ or ‘smoked salmon’ and knowing the raw ingredient market, we are surprised that their retail selling price is at or below our COST of ingredients for the same size bag. Either they know a supplier that we don’t, or aren’t being completely truthful with their ingredient listings.

We refused to consider selling a cheaper product so the only option was to raise our prices to remain the best premium supplier of pet food and provide our loyal customers the quality they demand.

We hope that you understand that we have tried to hold off as long as possible and that this decision came with much resistance. To ease some of the burden of the higher prices we will be offering promotions and coupons from time to time to reward our loyal users. Please check our website regularly for any news.

The new pricing structure for our online ordering will be effective Friday, September 12, 2008 at 5:00pm EST.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. If you have any questions feel free to email us at customer.suppo rt@timberwolforganics.com or call us at 407-877-8779.

Sincerely,

Mark Heyward

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Need advice or suggestions
« on: August 27, 2008, 03:49:25 pm »
for mosquitos!!  Poor Gunner has  a reaction to them everytime he goes outside.  This am his head, back legs and underbelly were covered in welts,  some were the size of a quarter!!  his poor head looked like one of those pimple dog balls.  he doesnt stay out long either.  he goes out the doggie door and lets himself in when ready.  Kira doesnt have this reaction or she isnt getting bit like Gunner.
Is there anything I can spray on him to help keep him from getting bit?  We have sprayed the outside perimeter of our fence but not the inside of the yard because Gunner lately will chew/eat whatever he can put his mouth on, including bricks, rocks, fence, wire, hoses, grass,a birds nest  that fell out of a tree, toys,  his blankie and the list goes on and on and on.

A friend of mine told me how to make these treats.  SOOO easy,  even I can do it! ;D

Take a can of wet dog food of choice(the minced mushy type works) and refridgerate it till firm,  open both ends of the can and slide out food whole then cut into 1/2 inch slices then cut in half into "moons".
Place on cookie sheet and bake at 325 degrees until moisture is gone and they are crisp, about 20-30 minutes.
If they are still moist continue to bake and check every 5 mins or turn off oven and let treats cool completely in oven.

I used wellness core canned,  Next week I will try the wellness fish in the blue can.  My guys love these treats and i dont have to worry about Kira and her skin issues with the wrong grains being in it.  I can even use the senior food or low cal for her.
My friend also mixes in oats with merrick bufffalo grill and processes it in the food processer then makes drop cookies the same way.

Tyler has God and angels watching over her! She came home from a party tonight and as she got to the front door, she said she stepped on something.

She rang the doorbell and walked in the house. As soon as she did, she heard a loud clicking rattle and turns on the outside light and sees a RATTLESNAKE on our porch! She is so fortunate that it didnt bite her.

Excuse the quality of the pic's, I was not about to open the door to get a better shot and also, Gunner , our mastiff puppy is a window licker so excuse how nasty it looks.

Earlier this year Logan, my oldest and son, almost stepped on a scorpion in our spare room.

Looks like they are increasing thier prices too.   :(

Food Discussion & Information / Gagging reflexes turned on
« on: July 31, 2008, 06:30:45 pm »
My friend's neighbor down the street feeds her two Very large rotties raw.   About an hour ago I get a phone call to come down because they want to show me something.
I get there and open the door and get a whiff of something that smells like poo and raw meat.
Al's brother had slaughtered some cattle and gave them  some and they were grinding up some of the meat and organs to make a mash(that is what they call it)
They tell me to look in the sink and in it is a cow stomach or stomachs.  That thing was HUGE. I'll spare the details of what the inside looked like when he cut it open but the smell almost knocked me over for sure!
They ground it up and gave me a pint of it to give to Kira and Gunner.  I think I will be feeding them that out in the back yard!!  They love seeing my reaction to things like that.  A few weeks ago it was rabbits.

You know you're a Rescuer if.....

Your vet thanks you for putting his kids through
college.

Your vet’s staff recognizes your voice on the phone
and asks “How many are you bringing in today?”

The enterance to every room of your house has a baby
gate across it but you don’t have toddlers.

Crates are considered part of the furniture.

Your dogs are eating premium dog food and you’re
eating peanut butter sandwiches.

There is a collection of leashes at every exit of your
house. And a couple of spares in the car.

You look around the living room and think “I can fit
three more crates in here if I get rid of the sofa.”

You know every rest stop and restaurant within a
hundred mile radius of your home.

You’ve had more canine riders in your vehicle than
Greyhound has had passengers.

Friends call your cell phone and ask where you are and
how many dogs you have with you.

You have a book of baby names but don’t have children.

You can temperament test a dog but have no idea why
most of your family isn’t speaking to you.

You have more dog food bowls than dinner plates in
your kitchen.

People don’t ask how you are, they ask how the dogs
are.

Every time someone asks you to participate in a
fundraiser you wonder if there’s a way to do something
similar to raise money for rescue.

Any time somebody is giving something away free, you
wonder if there’s any way the rescue group can use it.

Your heart sinks every time you receive an email or
voicemail from an animal shelter.

You wonder if there’s any way to squeeze “just one
more” into your household.

No matter how many times you clean it, your car still
has the underlying aroma of dog.

Your credit cards are maxed out and but you haven’t
bought yourself anything new in months.

Any “extra cash” you have is donated to the group.

Every time you bring home yet another foster, the
resident animals look at you like “Here we go again.”

You feed and walk dogs in shifts.

You’ve declined an invitation to go out because you’ve
spent so much time on rescue-related business lately
that you need to spend some quality time with your own
dogs.

You’ve been late for work because a new foster
wouldn’t cooperate.

You park your car in the driveway because you have an
emergency foster in your garage.

People know you as that “dog person”

You have let a foster dog sleep on the bed to help it
adjust to it’s first night in your home.

You can successfully integrate a new dog into the
household but forget the name of the person you’re
introducing to your friends.

You keep a supply of extra collars, in a variety of
sizes, on hand.

You remember the name and markings of every dog that’s
ever been through rescue but can’t recognize members
of your own family.

You can maneuver through a room full of dogs with ease
but you can’t walk across the street without
stumbling.

You’ve spent a sleepless night worrying about a dog in
need of rescue.

You know the location of every animal shelter in every
county in the state.

Your family, friends, and coworkers avoid you because
they’re afraid you’re going to ask them to foster
“just this once.”

All of your free cell phone minutes are used for
rescue-related calls.

You have taken time off from work to pull or transport
a dog.

You handle rescue-related issues even when you’re on
vacation or home sick.

There is no such thing as a day off.

You have driven halfway across the state to help a
dog, but you won’t drive across town to pick up a
pizza.

You will prepare a nutritious, high-protein meal for a
sick dog but won’t open a can of chicken soup for
yourself when you’re feeling under the weather.

You have cancelled appointments because a rescue
emergency has come up.

You eat more meals in your car than in your kitchen.

You drive an SUV or station wagon but don’t have any
kids.

You spend your free weekends at adoption events.

Your whole life revolves around the dogs and you
wouldn’t have it any other way.
