Newfoundland Discussions / Re: I love my dog because...
« on: May 11, 2008, 09:53:54 am »
What a perfect topic on Mother's Day ... Happy Mother's Day to all ... especially 'mothers to furbabies'!!!

I loved Ranger because ... he was our first true dog (as a married family).  I loved that he was crosseyes and had a pink stripe right up the center of his nose ... I loved that he would fetch a ball only three times and then go lay down in a shady spot with his 'prize', I love how he would patrol the house to make sure all was well during the night, I love that we had the sweetest last moments when he went on to chase bunnies in heaven!

I loved Soldier because he would take off on an adventure, come back home with spit all over his face and 'take his punishment for running off, knowing it was all worth it for the adventure!  I love that when I caught him on the couch and would tell him to get down, he's 'sear' (he sounded exactly like Yosemite Sam in the Bugs Bunny commercials), I loved that when he was a puppy and the vet looked at his tongue and said, "He has chow in him", my response was, "Yes I know, I just fed him" (thinking she meant he had Puppy Chow in his mouth, DUH!)  And I love that he would not die in front of my son, when he came home from school and waited until my husband and I both got home from work!!!

I love Fable because she was the first 'girlie girl' dog I'd ever met, she looks as if she needs a pink bow and a diamond tiara at all times!  I love that she's so afraid of thunder storms that she'll crawl in bed with us even though she knows she's not allowed to (yes, we make exceptions!), I love that she mother's everything we bring into the house!!!  I love that it took her eight long years to finally open her mouth when we tossed her a ball (she used to jump for frisbees, but didn't know she was supposed to open her mouth and catch them!)  I love that she has the meanest bark in the whole wide world and uses it fiercly while hiding safely behind my leg!

I love Minerva because she has taught me that little dogs are not all bad!  I love that she used to fall asleep on me with her tiny butt resting in my hand, I love that she doesn't tolerate the little outfits that you can buy at Petco!!!  I love that she is a fierce protector, even if the only threat is a moth!  I love that she rules the house, even though she's only 9 pounds!  And I love that she bathes herself like a cross between a cat and a bunny!

And Ozzy ...I love how one large ball of fluff can turn us all into total mush ... I love that he has the worlds largest tongue and is never afraid to use it.  I love that the other dogs can steal all his toys and he could care less, I love the dark goth circles around his eyes and the white spot on top of his head ... I love the fact that I fell in love with him from an internet photo and fell ten times more in love with him the moment I met him!  I love that he is totally uncapable of sneaking up on anything because he makes a "Ka-thump, Ka-thump" noise when he's running through the house, and I love the fact that I have no idea how big he'll get, but it'll never be as big as the love he has put in my heart!!!

WOW ... I love BPO for giving us a forum to gush about our animals, even if most people have stopped reading by now!!!

1.)  German Shepherd (in honor of Ranger)
2.)  Wolf Hybrid (again, Ranger!)
3.)  Australian Shepherd (for Ozzy, of course)
4.)  Rat Terrier (for Minnie ... the LARGEST breed of all, just ask her!!!)
5.)  Chow (for Soldier ... funny story, will tell another time)
6.)  Borzoi (part dog/part alien! ... used to have a friend, Ace who's front feet would come off the floor about 3 inches whenever he barked and it always sounded like:  "Ah-woof" in a very loud whisper!)
7.)  Great Pyrenees (part dog, part giant stuffed animal won at the county fair!)
8.)  Toy Poodle (for Kip ... a very 'frou frou' type dog but the poodle himself will NEVER admit that ... and why do groomers always put bows on their ears even when they're clearly MALE?)
9.)  Rottie (I tried to find Carl when I had my human babies, but I don't think he really existed!)
10.)  Golden Retreivers (perpetual puppies)

ooops ... 11.)  Border Collies (too smart for me!!!)

I still have NO IDEA what I did without this guy ... it's like he's been in my heart forever!!!  We 'applied' for about 10 puppies on PetFinder.com ... but Ozzy was our first and he's ultimatly the ONLY approval we got ... God had a plan!!!  I just love him to death ...

One of the names we were considering for Ozzy was:  Demolition ... Demo for short ~ I think it's a very appropriate name for a large dog!

We used to have two cats:  Merlin and Mordred ... we had to explain Mordred's name every time!!!  (Merlin's nemesis in the King Arthur stories)

Minerva, my rat was a 'mistake' too!  I have never been a little dog person, but a girl at work was desperatly trying to find a home for her.  She was 5 months old and the woman who purchased her had to get rid of her.  It seems her boyfriend didn't like the fact that the puppy peed in their bed EVERY night!!!  When I asked if the puppy was crate trained, the response was "She doesn't like the crate." ... Well, she quickly learned to LOVE her crate once we got her!!!  In fact, two years later, she still goes into her crate at will for quiet time (of course she has a crate designed for a 120 lb dog, HA!  We refer to it as "Puppy Disneyland".  Funny thing is, Ozzy's crate is actually smaller than Minnie's right now!!!

I am a sucker for strays and hard-luck cases!!!

We need to be a three dog household ... we were down to two for a bit but something was missing ... so we adopted Ozzy!!!  Currently we are having some issues (started right before Ozzy joined us), so both 'ladies' will be spayed in the next few weeks.  All was fine for two years, but our little rat has suddenly decided that she needs to be the dominant female and has started to be very vicious to Fable (our 8 year old husky mix) ... never a dull moment in our home ... and did I mention the fur EVERYWHERE!!!  I wouldn't have it any other way!

I think it's kinda funny that some other BPO lovers have tiny rat terriers ... I truly beleive they are the largest breed of dog of all (if only in their itty bitty minds)!!!  Unfortunately, my little Minerva "Minnie" has taught Ozzy that the best vantage point in the house is sitting on the back of the couch looking out the picture window ... I have a feeling I may also need to start saving up for a steel reinforced sofa!!!

As far as the name Ozzy goes, we thought of it before we even got the puppy because a.) my teenage boys saw Ozzy Osbourn in concert and b.) we were looking for an Australian Shepherd mix ... but the moment we saw our boy and took one look at his "Goth-style eyeliner" we knew that he WAS an Ozzy!!!

Thanks for all the nice comments ... it is so much fun to 'show off' the new baby!!!  Do I still get to be part of BigPawsOnly even though I have an under 10 pound rat terrier, tee hee???  She THINKS she's big!!!

Our baby, Ozzy is having a bit of a housebreaking issue ... in his foster home he was paper trained and has chosen 'two spots' in the house as his 'papers' ... when we take him outside (after crate time, after play time, after eating time, and more) he goes outside and gets praised big time ... but there are still a few accidents in the house where we don't catch him in time ... it seems as if he just doesn't know to go to the door and ask to go out, any advice on teaching a dog to go to the door???  Thanks for your help ... Lacey

We are the new 'parents' of a rescue puppy named Ozzy ... he is part Australian Shepherd and part 'something big' ... we're not sure what the 'big' part is but we're guessing Great Pyrenees or something similar ... he's 13 weeks and 30 pounds - 30 pounds of pure LOVE!!!

He has fit nicely into our family pack of an 8 year old female husky mix (Fable), 2 year old female rat terrier (Minerva) and 2 year old stray cat (Mystery), along with our two teenage boys (13 and 16 years old).

I am just so amazed at this living 'stuffed animal' ... he's the most affectionate, loving, adorable baby I've ever had and I can't wait to see just how big he ends up being (we're saving up for a king size bed right now, tee hee).

Thank you for letting me introduce myself,

Lacey
