Medical Conditions & Diseases / Re: How is Ellie doing?
« on: March 15, 2009, 01:06:19 pm »
Sorry, sorry, sorry. I have been a little self absorbed since Ellie came home.

She is literally bouncing off the walls, she doesn't look like she was ever sick or lost any weight at all!!!!!!!!

She came in the house and went after the cat and cleared the couch in one single leap. Tink, not to be outdone by her 40 lbs new sister thougth she would try it. Though not as graceful, she did manage to get her big butt over it. Needless to say I completely lost control of my house Friday night and loved every minute of it.

Dr. Dave said to keep her inactive for 2 weeks (yeah right) and to slowly introduce her normal food portions. She is already up to 6 cups and still hungry! No nausea and her stools are firm. She was only sent home on anti-diarhea meds for one week, no antibiotics. He told me to keep her away from other dogs and stay home for 30 days to help avoid furhter contaimination and to pick up her stool and bleach the ares where we pick it up. What must the neighbors have thought with Tim and his pooper scooper, me with my chemical sprayer, gloves and dogs in tow!!!!!!! This ate up most of our Saturday (they had both run 2 acres). We had been a little behind on poop patrol and had to pick up and spray all piles because we weren't sure which were Tinks and which were Ellies.

We are taking every precaution we possibly can and I have no doubt Ellie will be fine.

I also wanted to share something about my vet. Ellie was hospitalized for 4 days on IV solutions.

Cerenia
Covenia
Potassium
Vitamin B
Lactated Ringer(???)
6 cans of prescription dog food to take home
5 days of anti-diarhea meds to take home
Took her stiches out from her spay

Guess how much???? Anybody????

$453.50! Including tax.

My vet is amazing! I asked him if this was correct and he said it was but I think he was lying. I was expecting  a thousand dollar bill. I must do something special for them. They even came in overnight to see her and make sure she was OK. She really didn't even smell that bad when I picked her up. I think Lugene cleaned her up. I started to cry. They are absolutely amazing.

Ellie is taking to her new routine (yes I retook control of the house). A few accidents, but not many. She took to her crate well, sleeps through the night and snores like a pig!

She likes to eat toilet paper, rocks, mulch, sticks and DIG! She steals treats and toys right out of Tinks mouth, so I guess it is a good thing I didn't name her shy because she has turned into a pretty bold little girl.

Not to beat a dead horse but Tim and I really don't think "Ellie" fits and to be honest, it reminds me of the woman at the shelter who has been so horrible to me. Midnight is the deadline I told Tim. I will let you know tomorrow what we came up with.

Thanks for your patience and all your prayers and warm wishes. I am eternally greatful!!!!!!!! I promise to post updated picts tomorrow.

I love Willow too. That was another one he shot down.

Both dogs love to sit under our Willow tree. I really wanted to name Tink - Willow but it didn't happen.

He has tonight to come up with something or pick one of mine. I will let you know tomorrow.

Thanks guys, keep them coming!

I talked to Tim at lunch, apparently both dogs were digging meteor pits in the flower bed today (he wasn't watching them)

So now he wants to call her Kubota because she digs like a back hoe. Good grief - boys!

He says he likes Tonka too.

I reminded him she was a girl but he doesn't care.

We still can't decide. I was leaning toward Cinder this weekend but I think I really like Shy.

I like MeToo, because she follows Tink around like her shadow and has to investigate everything she does. She is truly a little sister but again Tim doesn't like it.

I am not sure what he is waiting for, some perfect name to drop out of the sky or something. He is shooting them all down but not offering any suggestions. - MEN!

I am going to give it another day and then we must decide.

We are still open for suggestions if anything comes to mind.

Oh one more thing. When we were outside yesterday, the kids next door were riding skooters up and down the driveway and Ellie went up to our side of the creek and started barking! She was defending her new home from the evil contraptions! She has an impressive deep bark for such a little girl. I was so proud. I think she knows she is home!

P.S. She has taken to her crate well. 48 hours and no accidents. - Yeah!

Newfy/ Saint owners - where do you think she falls in growth wise. She is estimated at 14 weeks (still has all her baby teeth)but her big brother was over 10 lbs heavier. Does she have some catching up to do or is she right on track?

Sorry it took so long but here are a few picts of Ellie. Tim and I agree the name just doesn't fix but we are drawing a blank as to what to name her. Ellie fits for now, but not sure if it will when she gets big. Below are a list of possibilities that did not get crossed off the list but I would like to get an id tag and start practicing her recall. We spent most of the day outside together and she follows Tink around like she is her mom, it was so cute. Tink even surrender her dog bed to her for a nap.(see below). She kept bringing Ellie toys trying to get her to play but she was tooo pooped to play. She is small for her litter, the runt at 40 lbs, her big brother was 50+ and the rest fell in between. From what I gather their mother was a saint, less than a year old and she had 6 pups total. The were all locked in a 8x8 shed and fed once a day. It was a survival of the fitest, so she probably didn't always get her share. She has some big paws though so I am sure she will fill them out. She is calm, docile and just adorable. Her hair is super thick, wavy and feels like rabbit fur. Any suggestions on names would be appreciated. Here is what we have so far. I want something cute that fits her personaliy, but not too froo froo and is easy to recall. One or two syllables.

Shy - because she is so shy, but that is chaning rapidly
Cinders - because of her coloring and my best friend Cinda
Destin - one of our favorite places to vacation
Marley - I love it, it fits, but will soon be over done
Annie - for little orphan
Zoe - but Tim hates it
Ellie - because it fits for now

I read somewhere that dogs can hear our heart beat even through walls. He probably could "hear" a difference in your heart rythm and it bothered him. Anyway, glad to hear you are OK, you bought your bright boy something specail I am sure.

I am Ellie's new mom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tim says her name doesn't quite fit (I like it though). I will post more picts tonight or tomorrow and we can have a naming party.

Tim just called and he spent time playing with all the pups in her litter. He said she hid behind the sofa at first but then followed him around the yard and never left his side. He said she was the best one of the bunch!

He says she is filthy dirty from playing outside so he isn't bringing her by my work. She just had surgery for spaying on Tuesday so that has me a little concerned that she is in the dirt and playing outside already. He still has two hours to drive home and he has to be to work at 5:00pm. So I won't actually get to see her until 5:30 tonight. Still dying here!

I am going straight to Petsmart at lunch!

I would still love to have Cam too but I would probably have to get divorced first. I know Paige and Lori will find him an excellent home so no worries. I was looking forward to meeting them in person though, maybe next time...

I just talked to Tim, he just got off the highway near Mt.Gilead, only about 1/2 to go. He made really great time or he let earlier than I thought. I was already at work.

He said he might stop for breakfast and I told him I would kill him if he did!!!!!!!!

Let me know the next time you come to Ohio, we must get together and you can bring your fur kids!

45
I live equal distance between Dayton and Cincinnati (southern Ohio) The rescue where Ellie is at is north of Columbus so Tim is on a 2 hour drive right now. He doesn't mind and likes the road trip.

Paige and Lori have been awesome to think of me and deal with me through this self-induced stress I am going through.

Cam is so flippin cute I can't stand it. If the other shelter had not called, I would have taken him with out hesitation and never logged on to Petfinder again. However, there were several people on the list to adopt Ellie and I was kinda surprised when they called. I have always loved the Newfys and just had to check her out. Honestly, Ellie's picture is kind of vague and probably does not do her justice.

Tim is more reasonable about these things and I am more emotional. If a saw a puppy any puppy I would bring it home for guilt of leaving it. If he decides not to get Ellie, she has lots of other families waiting to adopt her and that gives me comfort with our decision.

I am just happy knowing the decision is almost over and I should know who Tink's new brother or sister will be soon.

Needless to say I am not going to get anything done at work today!
