Big Dogs with Jobs / I'm back
« on: October 15, 2005, 11:59:03 am »
Well, I just got back from a trip of a lifetime.  A paddlewheel cruise up the Columbia River following the Lewis and Clark expedition.  I was with my family and the ship was actually powered with paddles, went through many locks and tour buses followed us along the roads to take us on many side trips.  I learned too much and didn't get drunk like I sould have.  heehee.  We were completely isolated from everything for eight days.

On my recorder when we got home was a message from the convalescent home that we did our first job and they want to schedule another visit because they all enjoyed it so much.  Made me feel very good.  We are picking up our new trainie (final name, Hobo) tomorrow.  happy happy

It looks like I missed a lot of weird  things and I cannot figure it all out.   I will keep reading and try to make sense of it all.  Any hints you can give me along the way will help.  I always miss everything. I missed all of you and don't know how to go back over more than a few days of posting to read them in order.  Oh well.

A happy dog is a dog with a job.

Red, please tell me about the contract.  I am going on vacation for eight days so when I get back I hope to be able to read your advice and hope it does not get buried where I cannot find it.  Maybe it will be in the training thread. ???  Your friend, Peggy

HaHa, I can just vision the sight of you curled up with him like a great big poofie pillow in a little love seat.  Is it white?  If so, I bet its not now.   ;D

I check in at least once each time I log in if it is early morning or late evening.  About a week ago I saw an elephant but haven't seen another one again.  Have any of you? Looks like it makes a hot every 10 seconds.  I wonder how many cameras they are using and at what angles they are on the pond.  Neat site, I have forwarded it to many of my friends.

I have dial up and some things are a little slow, not others since I recently upgraded.  The only problem I have with BPO is that when someone sends a whole line of photos, it take FOREVER for them all to load.  I bet broadband will help.  Maybe I'll have it soon be too expensive here.

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Re: Training Question
« on: October 04, 2005, 11:37:44 am »
You know there are lots of great ways to teach stay just like there are lots of training ways that are all acceptable and work.  I will tell you the way I like to do it.  I put them in a sit position and then first back off a step and face the dog with both hands, palms facing the dog along with the verbal command "stay".  If the dog at first does it for a very short time, great.  I reward with praising and love.

I personally do not use treats for the basic obedience commands and stay is one of them - I use great loud praise sounds especially goooooooood dog.  I use treats for more complicated commands that are above and beyond the call of obedience commands.

Each time the dog is successful with Stay I back step a little further always using the command "Stay" along with the hand signal.  After a lot of practice you can drop the verbal command if you want to and just use the hand signal for the dog to stay in any position you put him in.

I like hand signals only because I hate to hear people shouting and screaming at their dogs.

Just my uncomplicated way.
