This Really happened to me yesterday.  My dad (93 years old)
was visiting for the weekend and I drove yesterday to the train station for his trip home.  Dad says "Peggy, I can't walk well so jump on the train and get me a good seat and save it".  So I jump on the train and can't find a good seat.  Then I try another car and found a so-so one.  Now I always take Niki with her cape on so she mingles with people and loud noises like train engines.  By the time Dad reaches us, he is complaining that the seat is facing the wrong direction and wasn't a window seat,  but I knew I had to leave.  I have to back off for a guy on a walker and then I realize that train is moving.  Oh no 45 minutes till the next stop which is Hanford.  I had no money on me so Dad is shoving 20's at me.  The conductor thought it was funny.  2 and a half more hours before the northbound train leaves Hanford so I can get back. We wander around Hanford shopping and checking out the sites.  It is strange how some people are afraid of big dogs even with a Therapy Dog vest on.  Oh yeh, hang on to your hot dog.  Finally got on the train back after Niki was entertaining everybody in the station with her tricks.  On the train I decided to go in the upper level.  We sat in a four seat section  with a table in between us.  Niki got on the seat facing me sitting up.  I said "wanna play cards?'  By the time we got to Fresno she had the whole car laughing.  She went up and down the aisles picking up papers and things for the passengers.

Turned out a fun day.  I did not tell my husband and don't think I will.  I came out ahead too because Amtrak did not charge me for either way so now I have extra 20's. hahaha

I agree with Red also but there are other ways too.  My friend has a fire investigation dog that sniffs out accelerants after fires to find out the cause.  He has a daily routine that his dog "Andre" must do everyday, and I mean he never misses a day.  Only after he has finished his daily accelrant identifying mission does he get fed.  Sounds pretty stern but Andre won top fire dog for the entire country.   :D

You are right, dog's lives are much too short.  Farewell Sassy, you will live forever in those beautiful photos.  :'(

Yup Jamie is on the nose according to my book.  I do not like begging dogs and taught Niki to ignore us while we are eating even though some of my grandkids try to sneak her a little.  I use the command (ignore) then reward her after we eat.  Humans always eat first.   It is funny though, she sits up straight and looks entirely a different way so we will be sure to see how good she is ignoring.   ;D

I am sure you will find it easily corrected.

Well, I trained Niki myself because she worked in my video store for years delivering movies to people's cars and a bunch of other duties.   So after we closed the stores, passing the therapy dog test was a piece of cake.  Really it is not too hard and the biggest help is to take the dog everywhere you can and be around a lot of people, noises and activity.  Places like the parking lots of large stores, inside malls, parks, county fairs and on and on. It is not a requirement that they be professionally trained.  I had to teach her to ignore other dogs because people often came to our store with dogs with them or in their cars.  After years of that I took her to a dog park and she was mortified that other dogs were sniffing her butt  ;D ;D ;D.   That was OK.

She is ten and still going strong.  Old is OK but the dog must be at least one year and the handler must be over eighteen.  I take her to assisted living homes and tell everybody she is seventy years old and they love that.  I truly believe a dog needs to be at least two years old to begin heavy duty therapy training but TDI only requires that they be one.  It is best to start training when they are pups.

Here's the link to Therapy Dog International.  This site should answer all of your questions and even give you what will be needed to pass the test.  Good Luck.  Niki just passed the test and you can tell by my Avatar what the Therapy Dog Vest looks like.  Good luck.

Any other questions, just ask.

Wow, a few antelope and a bunch of birds that look just like we call Guinea Hens.  Thanks for sharing this site, I put it in my favorites so I can go back different times of the day.  Amazing what satellites can do to connect the world together  :)
