You'd be surprised . . . most of our Newfs were big sissies when they felt safe, but they were totally ferocious in our defense (and in defense of the house).

LMAO--I still think Diesel would push my in front of the aggressor and say in his crazy language "woof-take the girl but leave me alone!!!"    ;D ;D

I have slight dog allergies, and I own a Newf. I thought for years that I could never own a dog till I dog sat 2 dogs for a friend as an extreme favor. It was at their place, which till then I had to visit equipped with benedryl. But when dog sitting, I noticed that I was fine with my allergies with a vaccuming and dusting every 2 days. That's when I knew I could get a dog.

I'd seriously try keeping more on top of cleaning before ditching the dog! The effort has been well worth it for me and my house is cleaner than it has ever been.

Thanks everyone, I believe the long leash is what is in order.

As for the training lessons, I have been to the beginner ones. They were fun-it's one thing to read about training principles, but another to have to perform them in front of a group and see others struggle through them at your side as well. I love a group effort.

But as mentioned, Diesel performs well in a controlled environment, and just needs to tackle the old mommy vs other dog/squirrel/idiot-with-treat dilemma  :)

Thanks again, this week will be my first long leash at the park attempt.

Newfoundland Pictures / Diesel's vacation
« on: January 05, 2009, 07:13:29 pm »
Diesel just came back from a two week vacation up north, in Gold Bridge. To give you an idea of the place, the town center has a total population of 44 people.

My in-laws took him down to their cabin while we had our holiday work rush, which is one of the most intense rushes of the year. They brought him on ski-doo runs, on snow shoe hikes, let him play in the snow on their acre. He came back yesterday evening, and my, he beefed up!

Now the dog is back, our rush is over and life is back to normal. Well, maybe it will be once we clean up the house, restock the fridge and re-crate-train the dog!  ::) Ah well! ;)

FAQs about puppies / Come command

I need all the advice I can get on this one!

So far I do practices, back and forth with my hubby, randomly in the house, where he gets praise then treat. It's not really cutting it.

He's great at it if a treat is the best reward around at the time, but if there is a better reward, say like another dog, a squirrel or an idiot at the dog park giving him a treat, it's over.

At that point I'll slowly walk over and leash him for a bit, or leave if he really annoyed me, but by that time, I'm not sure if he can put "not coming when called" together with "no more off-leash". The time discrepancy between this action/reaction seems a bit big for a dog.

I want to achieve better than this, any suggestions?

Would you believe-it's actually snowing! And it has been, all week. I'm actually pretty happy, I'm from the east coast and I haven't had a white Christmas in years.

But I must admit, the thing I like the most about the rainy season thing in Vancouver is that when it's over, it's abruptly over. No springtime snow melting that lasts 2 months and creates puddles and disgusting brown slush all over the road.

PS I LOVE the food channel. We've gotten rid of cable and it's probably the only thing I miss about it.

I've always wanted to call 2 males Jeckyll and Hyde  :)

For boy/girl, Sunny and Cher, Cleo (patra) and Caesar, Napoleon and Josephine?

Lol, what about John and Yoko? Yoko the b...  ;D  ;)

I'm sorry about this awful situation, this must really suck the fun out of dog ownership.  :-[

I agree with everyone here: get professional help. Seriously! It sounds like he may be the pack alpha, and it may be dangerous/difficult for you to re-establish your position as "top dog" by yourself.

Good luck, let us know how it goes!  :)

I wish you were a neighbor, I've got so many goodies, and we're not even done yet! So far theres the pickled beets the spicy long beans, herb and garlic, pomegranate jam, the pear jam...

I've somehow singed some of the skin on my fingers from the garlic, could you believe that! Pretty strong stuff... Then the beet juice dye and the Mega Finger and all, I'm looking pretty mangled, lol.

Newfoundland Discussions / Re: Maybe getting another Newf puppy...

A friend of mine co-owns a poodle. She is not allowed to neuter him until the lady says so, and apparently it is getting a bit troublesome for her...but the lady wants to breed him a bit more.

I personally could never co-own a dog. It seems to me like the situation is set up for conflict. Then maybe that's just me, I do tend to like doing things my way.  ???
