Treatment & Preventative Meds / Re: How about compulsory spay/neuter?
« on: January 01, 2006, 09:00:43 pm »
Something that struck me when I moved to this country was that vet care is very expensive. I dont have a lot of countries to compare to but I know in Sweden and Norway they are rather similar. Both countries way higher taxes than here, about the same income level if you see to similar jobs. Yes the majority of people have insurance for their dogs, but even without a spay or neuter will run you about $100 in a very good clinic with monitors and bloodwork. So in general I think vets here could charge way less than they do.

I am fortunate though, I found a wonderful vet here, they charge about $ 130 for spay of a dog who is approx. 100 lbs. And that is including monitors and blood work. They charge $11 for the rabies vaccinations and are overall very modest in their billing.

So if the vets were more into actively working on getting the overpopulation down I am sure that could be done.

We still have to explain to Kali why her tree is going to need to leave, it should be interesting.

haha, yeah I was worried about that day here too, Galahad was sooo in love with the tree, but I think now when he is over that first love, it will be okay. It is tough to break up puppylove  ;D

Im sorry to hear he is still not  home, but sometimes it is just really hard to get the one who lost and the one who found to find eachother, I am sure now when we are back to normal days again, it will get easier and you will have him home before you know it  :D

A great letter  :D I was thinking about that some time ago, what happened to them, but now I see that nothing happened, that is just too sad. I wrote a comment too, we'll see if they publish it or not  ;)

Poor Kali, she had worked so hard on finding just the right tree and they you all hang silly stuff in it  ;D

Galahad has fallen out of love, he is no longer in love with the tree, now he is back to his normal self and really dont care that the tree is there, al least not when he is doing one of is wacko running arounds and 10 times straight run into the tree, I am amazed it is still standing lol. Im a sucker for christmas so we usually keep the tree at least a week into Jan. I think this year though, it has to go in a couple of days, it is not really impressive anylonger  ;)

You always have your BPO family here, whatever you need.

Safe passing Dilbert  :'(

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Re: Daisy's in her first heat!
« on: December 30, 2005, 12:22:21 am »
You will see that after usually 7-10 days she will change a bit and act more willing  ;) they usually dont stand until then and that usually lasts for about a week or so. some dogs stand earlier and others later, some a week, others only a couple of days. But already said be careful, because they are really really clever when it comes to getting to eachother. I would wait to spay her until the heat is over, if you do it now, when she is in prime heat, she will most likely bleed much more during the surgery. The risks are much smaller if it is done when they are not in heat.

Dixie.... I used to have intact both males and females when I was showing and breeding danes. My boy Zorro, had to go stay with my parents about 4-5 days into the heat and stayed there until "risk over" lol. We were there every day though, so it wasnt that bad, and he absolutely adored my parents. If that had not been an option, I guess we would have separated them at home, the really bad part is that once the female went into a standing heat, poor Zorro was "serenading" her 24/7, until I felt like strangling him or myself lol.

what a beautiful throw. Me too was thinking ohhhh nooooo not a christmas puppy hehe. I totally want one. I think I saw somewhere that you can send in a pic of your dog or kid or whatever you want on the throw or pillow and get it made after the pic.

I am so so sorry to hear about Dilbert, it is such a scary thing to go through, our Buffy who passed away last summer, was hit by a car several years ago, she also snuck out and ran out on the tiny little dead end road we have here, and was hit by a car, the car didnt even bother to stop. She was in the vets office with iv and all kinds of meds. both her back legs were not working, It looked real bleak, but she made a full recovery, it took quite a while and was a lot of work but she made it. So have faith, having survived the first trauma is a good sign, very good.

My thoughts and prayers are with you, and I am sending all the good vibes possible.

Give your boy all the good thoughts from BPO and lots of hugs to you

lol it kinda sounds like a april fools joke. I love the 5 pack chihuahua attacked and the detective called Bill Veteran  ;D But isnt that the ultimate proof that size is absolutely NOT an indicator whether a dog is dangerous or not.

Ohhhh poor baby Iz, I hope he gets to feeling better soon. I have to agree with Mari, that rice and chicken is the most common for a bland diet. Also the pepto bismo is good, I use that on mine when their bellies are upset. It doesnt sound like something thats stuck, but sometimes it is almost impossible to see with x-ray and need to be carefully ultrasounded. A good sing that he acts like a brat again  ;D

Good Luck and please keep us updated

its soooo great when you find pics you forgot you even had  :D And I am with you about the girl, Im a mom to two legged kids too but have never let them treat the animals with anything but respect. the way I see it is, the kids need to learn how to treat animals, not the other way around, dogs in general are great with kids that are good with them.
