Labrador Retriever Discussions / Update on Shadow
« on: December 14, 2005, 09:37:21 pm »
Update on Shadow.  She is doing very well, her UTI seems to be resolving, I had her kidney function checked today just ot be sure the dehydration did not do any damage and she came out with normal results.  Had her shots, and Andy (our vet) checked her neck again.  His partner had looked her over MOnday.  Andy decided we should shave her neck just to get a good look.  What felt like internal swelling was just that but she also has a noose around her neck where the snare sliced through the skin!  so bacitracin until healed, Cali had her rabies today and ears checked she has ear mites!  I said how the heck did she get that!  Question was "do you have cats?"  well yes my daughter has 3 lovely felines.  Andy just looked at me then he kinda coughed and said "how many dogs?"  well, five now.  Well we should treat all 3 cats and all 5 dogs.  He gave me the shots, and the next round for 2 weeks later, and after all the work up on Shadow I promised him my next born child, my kidneys when I die and my gratitude!  LOL!!!!!  That was a HEFTY bill!  yeow!  But everyone will be just fine.  He showed us the ear mites with this cool microscopic machine he put in Cali's ear, all I can say it gives me the shivers thinking of ANYTHING crawling in my ear, hhhmmmm mabye I need mine checked as well~!

Book Club & Noteworthy Reads / OUR EXPERIENCE BY MYRISSA
« on: December 10, 2005, 02:53:48 am »
Before I share my daughters story of this experience with Shadow, I have to tell you that I was very upset with my husband for letting hte dogs out and not putting them in the kennel.  I did not express this to my children, but as my husband called himslef  he felt like a "zero" when she dissapeared, and today he said he went from "zero to hero"  so true....  This is shared with his permission...

"The Lazy Trapper and a Father and Husband Who Went From Zero to Hero"
On Dec 7, my brothers little 10 week old lab went missing.  My father had let our male Kuvasz Aidan and our female Kuvasz Cali out with Shadow to for their daily routine potty break.  When he went to let them in Shadow was missing... My dad called for Shadow and she never came.  He took the snowmobile out looking for her and could not find her.  After not finding her my dad asked our neighbors, who trap wild game , to check their trap lines. My mom left a message telling them Shadow was missing and to please check their lines.  My brother is 11 and the proud owner of Shadow, when he got off the bus from school, he came in the house and mom told him she had something to tell him, he broke into tears and begged her not to tell him, my mom cried and my dad felt terrible..Two years ago my brother lost his best friend Shady around the same time.  My brother was far to traumatized to go to school the next day so he stayed home with my dad while my mom went to work, They looked for Shadow again, with no luck.  My dad decided to get a new puppy to try and help Anthony.  He took him to a man's house who had lab and Chesapeake puppies, my brother picked a pretty brown girl and named her Ginger.  He was happy but I could tell he was still sad..We started to lose faith that Shadow would be found, and thought an Eagle had taken her, after a few days of storms and below zero weather my mom and I were very discouraged.  Wer looked everywhere we thought dad had missed.  Today my dad was working on our kennel, and thought he heard Shadow!  He went out for one final time.  He looked all over the woods where he thought he heard her, he trespassed on our neighbors property and finally found her in one of their traps.  She was crying and yelling so loud...When my mom got home dad was waving his arms and my mom thought something bad had happened, but it was good news...Dad had Shadow....Mom was crying, Anthony was crying, and Shadow gave Anthony a big hug...Dad called everyone who had been looking for her and told them she was found.
There is a reason there are trapping laws, no animal deserves to suffer, wild or a pet.  It is important to check everyday.  To be responsible, our puppy was trapped 4 days and lived, that is terrible. Lazy trappers should not be trapping.  My dad is my hero. He says he went from "zero to Hero"  He is all of our hero he saved my brothers baby..."

Labrador Retriever Pictures / PLEASE EVERYONE READ
« on: December 09, 2005, 06:28:29 pm »
Today while we were at the movies my husbnad was workingo n the kennel and making things more safe for our animals.  When I arrived home he was frantically waving at me.   My heart dropped, I just thought Oh God not something else....

However.....(DRUM ROLL)
Shadow is in the house, Anthony is screaming his head off in total joy, and I am crying...OMG!!!!  He searched the woods behind the neighbors house, he heard crying when in the kennel working and went on the snowmoblie looking again, after 2 hours in the woods on foot and calling her he must have gotten close enough and she started hollering, he found her
STUCK IN THE NEIGHBORS TRAP.  CAUGHT AROUND HER HEAD IN A SNARE LYING NEXT TO A BIG CLAW TRAP.  She was very fat 4 days ago, and is very skinny now, dehydrated, and weak, but she is going to be ok, she will be on broth and gatorade until tomorrow.  Monday she will see the vet, he said she should be fine.  We have also called the police who notified the state game wardens.  I am waiting for a call right now.  It is the law that you must check your trap line EVERYDAY.  On Wednesday and Thursday they were asked to check their traps.  The wife said "I don't know if he has traps"  He said he would look.  4 days later they are still unchecked except by my husband and THANK GOD this little girl has a will to live....
Anthony got on his knees and she stood up and hugged him.  Attached is the picture.  THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR THE SUPPORT AND PRAYERS.  Shana

Labrador Retriever Discussions / VERY SAD AND VERY UPSETTING I AM PISSED
« on: December 08, 2005, 04:11:00 am »
I do not want to repeat this so I am pasting the situation froma  private email I had with another BPO member.  I just cannot keep reliving this.

I am totally up for a visit, I don't have the time off that you do, but we can work something
out!  We don't have new puppies yet, I expect Beauty to come into heat again in 3 months and at that time we will be expecting!....
Sad news also, I think I told you that my son lost his lab 2 years ago this time of year, we promised him a new dog after we sold all Beauties pups this last summer.  Brought a Cocker home, Kuvs did not like at all, so we rehomed him and I got Anthony a lab girl pup.  10 weeks old today...Yester day Steve (hubby) let her out to go potty with Aidan and Cali, she dissapeared!  Steve called me at work and I came home we searched and searched, talked to neighbors, took teh snowmobile out and it was fruitless...We had fresh snow so it was easy to track Aidan and Cali, however Shadow (lab) prints did not leave the yard.  You have ben here so know how big our yard is....There has been an Eagle hanging out last few days and Steve thinks it grabbed her....Her prints just dissapear....I am so upset, but worse was telling Anthony another oneof his dogs was gone...He was totally destroyed.I could not stop crying when he came home from school to train her some more and asked him to sit with me first.  He just looked at me and said " No mommy, not my dog , not again!"  He ran upstairs and I just cried, he came back down and laid against me and cried, I bawled like a baby...Steve feels so bad, he looked, she is gone.
Today he stayed home from school, and Steve took him to a home that had 3/4 Chessies and 1/4 lab pups.  He picked a girl who is brown with black accents.  Nose, ears, chest and tail.  Anthony refused to pick a black girl because "I have bad luck with black dogs"  This girl is very pretty however I was at work when they went, and when I called to find the birth day so I know whento give shots, I find that she is BARELY 4 weeks old.  Go figure....She is beautiful, and full of spunk, no whining, no crying....I am still totally upset and want to case the woods and surrounding areas for Shadow.  I realize she never left the yard, we had fresh snow they were easy to track but I have to be sure....I CANNOT believe she is gone, I CANNOT believe an Eagle grabbed her, although they have grabbed our cats.  She was with the Kuv's!  Our neighbor told us her poodle was grabbed right in front of her never to be seen again..DA**!!!! I cannot tell you how horrid this is.....
On a different note, this week I am off fri, sat, sun.  Next week, I am off fri, sat sun.  Let me know what you want to do!  Shaan
ps.  I am going to copy and post this on big paws as I don't want to keep repeating the story of our missing pup.....Shana

Hubby had the digital out early yesterday morning taking pictures outside of the great outdoors.  The trees are all so beautiful right now with small beads of ice attached up and down the branches, icicles hanging from some, it looksl ike a crystal palace.  Pictures don't capture the beauty completely, but here are some pictures of what our yard looks like right now.  Shana

Puppy Size

"She keeps repeating it over and over again. We've
been back to this shelter at least five times. It
has been weeks now since we started all of this,"
the woman told the volunteer.

What is it she keeps asking for?" she asked
"Puppy size!"

"Well, we have plenty of puppies, if that's what
she's looking for."

"I know. . .we have seen most of them," the Mom
said in frustration.

Just then the young child came walking into the
office "Well, did you find one?"

"No, not this time," she said with sadness in her
voice. "Can we come back on the weekend?" The two
women looked at each other, shook their heads and
laughed.

"You never know when we will get more dogs.
Unfortunately, there's always a supply," the
volunteer said.

The young child took her mother by the hand and
headed to the
door.

"Don't worry, I bet we'll find one this weekend,"
the child said.

Over the next few days both Mom and Dad had long
conversations with her. They both felt she was
being too particular. "It's this weekend or we're
not looking any more," Dad finally said in
frustration. "We don't want to hear anything more
about puppy size either," Mom added.

Sure enough, they were the first ones in the
shelter on Saturday morning. By now the young
child knew her way around, so she ran right for
the section that housed the smaller dogs. Tired
of the routine, Mom sat in the small waiting room
at the end of the first row of cages. There was
an observation window so you could see the
animals during times when visitors weren't
permitted. The young girl walked slowly from cage
to cage, kneeling periodically to take a closer
look.

One by one the dogs were brought out and she held
each one. One by one she said, "Sorry, you're
not
the one." She was at the last cage on this last
day in search of the perfect pup. The volunteer
opened the cage door and the child carefully
picked up the dog and held it closely.

This time she took a little longer. "Mom, that's
it! I found the right puppy! He's the one! I know
it!" she screamed with joy. "It's the puppy
size!"

"But it's the same size as all the other puppies
you held the last few weeks," Mom said.

"No not size ---- sighs. When I held him in my
arms, he sighed," she said. "Don't you remember?
When I asked you one day what love is, you told
me love depends on the sighs of your heart. The
more you love the bigger the sighs!"

The two women looked at each other for a moment.
Mom didn't know whether to laugh or cry. As she
stooped down to hug the child, she did a little
of both.

"Mom, every time you hold me, I sigh. When you
and Daddy come home from work and hug each other,
you both
sigh. I knew I would find the right
puppy if it sighed when I held it in my arms,"
she said. Then holding the puppy up close to her
face she said, "Mom, he loves me. I heard the
sighs of his heart!"

Close your eyes for a moment and think about the
love that makes you sigh.

 ;)

As it is supposed to  begin snowing this evening and the temperatures have dropped dramatically with warnings of a blizzard on the horizon we have pulled alll the remaining vegetables from the garden, except the potatoes which can stay a while longer!  So Cali, Steve, Aidan and the boys picked the remainder of the garden, (Cali helped by teething on the pumpkin stems) Beauty Myrissa and I worked on putting some of it up for the winter. Afterwards, Cali and Steve warmed up together in my big recliner.  Enjoy the pictures!  Shana

Kuvasz Discussions / IN ONE MORE WEEK I MAY BE IN A PADDED ROOM!
« on: September 23, 2005, 05:40:32 am »
:o  Beauty has reached her "standing heat" stage of her cycle, 13 days into the heat.  I think I may go insane before iti s all over.  The first 13 days were not bad at all, she is in our large kennel, it is electric around the bottom, Aidan is inside most of the time, does not even go near the kennel when out with us.  HOWEVER 2 days ago we reached the "FUN" part of her heat.  The two of them have seperate kennels on opposite sides of the house, cannot see eachother, and NEVER SHUT UP!  I swear you would think they were dying the way they sound.  I actually took Aidan off the property today for 4 hours with me to town.  I thought he may have a stroke with all the commotion he is making.  THEN we get home and he goes back to his kennel it is a portable 12x12x12 we borrowed chain link,  heavy duty, from our neighbor who breeds huskies.  I put him in, went int he house and was just in time to see him lift the kennel with his head/neck and escape under it!!!!!  BEELINE for Beauty's kennel!  GOOD GRIEF!, so now we have secured it so he cannot lift it and he is out there making the biggest stink I have ever heard.  Just discovered the solar charger is not working properly on our large kennel, so I have to go out and convert it all to plug in.  EVERY manner he has learned has become obsolete in his manic stage, she is not helping by calling him all day and all night.  The poor boy may die if he doesn't calm down soon.   :o  WE made a stop at the vet today while in town as he is coming up for his rabies vacc due date, and he told me I could give him some benadryl to take the edge off.  Well if it works the same as it does when we use it on patients for agitation after they are worked up, I will have a dog who knows how to fly over 12ft fences!  Now me on the other hand could use a few benadryl right about now!   :o
